The Evil Within PC Performance Thread

Yup, this isn't a bad PC port at all. Run into no quirks with the 60 FPS unlock and it's keeping a solid 55-60 the entire time so far. Love this hallway too.

so is unlocking the 60fps a hard process?

I'm running

i5 3570k @4.3
AMD Radeon HD7950 3GB (I think it's 3GB)
8GB RAM

Unlocked to 60fps and aspect ratio at 1.8 which removes almost all of the black bars, and I'm averaging fps in the 40s. Chapter 2 though, wasn't running fraps at the beginning.

I have no knowledge of how VRAM works, so I have a question; will unlocking the framerate increase VRAM usage, and will it be a ton more demanding? I'm debating whether unlocking would be good for my 2GB card or not. I'd kind of rather get stable 30 than sub 60 and all over the place, but maybe I'm not looking this the right way.

I'm no expert either, but I'm pretty sure unlocking FPS doesn't increase VRAM usage. That's all based on certain graphical options, of which you can't change any in the settings in-game that would affect VRAM. Might be able to change them in the inis though.

No, VRAM goes to things like textures and alpha particle resolution. VRAM will be the same at 1fps or at 1000fps.

Bumping the framerate cap up to 60fps won't increase VRAM usage but actually getting to 60fps does place a bigger burden on the processing power of your GPU. See how you go; if you find the framerate varies too much for your liking, you can just lock it to 30fps again.

My i7 4770k, 7970 3GB, 16GB RAM PC is pleased. I'm now set on going with PC.

VRAM usage? Not exactly. More demanding? Yup.

What it might do is make a more noticeable stutter or loss of detail if the game has to stream textures in, as it will only have half the time to get those textures and draw a frame at 60 than it would at 30.

No experience with this game though so YMMV.

Please no

Well I haven't been able to get it working with Gsync yet. I have to force my refresh to 60 hz to get it to 60 fps rather than some weird other amount (which will probably be fine, but again, no gsync).

The initial outside area in the rain seems to be the worse case scenario for aliasing and performance so far, so I guess that's a pretty good test to see how the game is running. Inside I'm at a nice stable 60 so far at least.

So with the commands how is everyone finding the aspect ratio? I wont be buying the game just yet as I already have Shadow of Mordor and Alien Isolation to play.

Anyone tried Full-Screen? I know its not recommended however still curious, I usually don't mind black bars, however somethings feels off to me from the videos I've seen.

Steam command line modifiers (ie. The shortcut switches) are entered in with a comma between each command, or is it no comma and just a space? Want to add in both the enable console switch and the 60 fps lock. Always get them wrong if it is inputting more than one.

Anyone running on a 6950 2GB or similar with performance impressions? Going to hazard a guess and say it'll be a little rough.

Is sharing disabled for this game? Have a buddy that wanted to check out my copy to see if he likes it but it isn't showing up in his account under shared games.

Isn't the 60 fps lock an ingame console command? At least that's how I'm using it.

At 1080p so far it has only used at most 2.5gb vram.

Great game also :) Quite the looker too.

----actually, I switched the res to 1440p while that was running to see the framerate so that will affect the vram max report (if you're on a 2GB card don't sweat yet).

The latter.

Found that pressing "Pre-Load" actually launched the game for me after restarting Steam. I've since created a shortcut with the command "r_swapinterval -1", and i worked just fine. It seems there's no need to pull-up the debug console after all. Will now try adding other commands.

Edit: I see what you mean now

Just finished the second chapter and will play more later after some sleep, but here some technical feedback: game ran at constant 30 FPS at 1080p and maxxed out settings. To me, this is Wolfenstein all over again where my friend and I expected the worst only to find out that the game runs pretty well on mid-tier machines.

And yeah, while texture-wise this game is more hit and miss (at least in the areas I've played so far), it really has a lot of standout moments due fantastic lighting, motion blur and detailed character models. Seeing it at high resolution and in motion in front of me is really something else. But yeah, I had some texture streaming issues during cutscenes with a lot of cuts which is probably again id Tech 5's fault, but it didn't annoy me as much as the skip-hint in the lower-right corner.

So far, so good!

Yeah it's a very good looking game when playing. The way fog clings to the ground and leaves blow around and the really great lighting. It's a very nice image

with a 780ti? damn. :(

Yep, at 1920x1200 for reference. Turning on the light/lantern at times also cut 15 frames off me. But majority of the time it's 60 so don't worry. OH! and my 780Ti is only 3GB too for reference

but how much vram do you have tho

Just can't hold 60FPS in this game at 1080p. Since there are no options to move a lot of settings that other games have available, I'm a little stuck. Maybe it's because I had to go back to the official driver release before the latest one NVIDIA has just so I could play DOOM 3.

I wonder if using the new drivers will make a difference.

Going to go to Snoozeville, south of Snorelando. Would appreciate impressions of people with similar specs if you would be so kind.

i5-2500k @ 4.2Ghz

1 Xbox three hundred and sixty wired video game input device.

Thanks.
