The Evil Within PC Performance Thread

I tried the fullscreen+FOV fix and yes, it is much easier to play and everything is more clear... which in the end makes it a worse experience for me too. I went back to 2:35 aspect ratio with default FOV.

It really feels like playing in a movie, and it is pretty clear Mikami and his team designed the game to be experienced that way.

Anyway the best for me is that in the end we PC gamers get to choose despite the devs trying to enforce limitations.

Thank you flawless widescreen!

So I did flawless widescreen, am I supposed to adjust the FOV first? I went in and the black bars are gone, but It looks like the FOV is still really close up

Also does flawless widescreen do anything with framerate?

Lastly, does it make any permanent changes? Or does it only mess with the game when it is currently up and running?

your framerate is going to receive a hit because you are rendering more things now and as far as i know, if you are not running flawlesswidescreen none of your games will be affected

The FOV changes depending on which area of the game you're in. It's really low/close in the save area.

With the game off it says: "Searching for The Evil Within process, please configure desired settings and launch the game."

With the game started it says: "Configuring"

Nothing happens though, the letterbox stays, the FOV doesn't change.

edit: Actually I got this while trying it just now:

Anyone have any idea what that means?
I have the same card. I had to use the "refresh" option to search for and download the newest Evil within version. Then I used Search at top to find it and clicked on it to set it up. Works flawlessly now.

Hey dude- I had the same issue as you yesterday. I finally got it working today. This is what I did- click on 'Check or update' in FWS. Clicking this, I found out that my FWS program was 1) Using x32 instead of X64 2) My TEW plug in was 1 day outdated.

Works like a charm after it got updated

This worked!

Use the '-' and '+' on your numpad to increase and decrease the FOV while in game.

You can also do it in the program itself before hand and it saves what you set it to from then on.

Personally I like the default. Gets rid of the black bars while preserving the original feel.

Is anyone else having problems with the sound not recording in Shadowplay with this game??

I'm using Desktop capture to record it but it's not recording the sound...

Sorry guys but I have to ask again,

Any suggestions on fixing controller lag? I thought I could just cope with it but it makes split second timing very difficult, especially when disarming bombs.

how to do flawless widescreen ? is it gonna disable achievements ?

BTW , chapter 3 is full of crashes , any one experience this ?

edit :

before

after

somehow , i think i'll stick with the original
it much creeper
anyway , i think there is something wrong with the colors , blurry maybe ?

anyone can explain to me what is FOV ?

Best fix as always: Locked 60FPS.

That eurogamer article leads me to believe that won't be happening for me unfortunately.

My rig is struggling to keep it locked at 30 honestly.

CPU: AMD 6350 @ 3.9 GHz
GPU: R9 270x

When playing on my monitor there's no lag at all, just when I hook it up to my TV. Doesn't happen with any other games so I don't think it's the TV.

Just tried the 60fps CFG change, sorry, but this a stuttery, unmanageable mess. Are some of you really playing the game like this?

This game really is a 30fps game, unless a patch comes along. And it's fine. Been playing at a locked 30fps for 8 hours without any issues.

I'm leaving locked @ 30 and using flawless widescreen to remove black bars and fix FOV.

I asked before but didn't get an answer. How CPU dependent is this game? Will my trusty old i7 860 doom me to consistantly sub 30 framerates? I can't find any benchmarks that include it.

Is this game really locked at 30 fps? I just started playing and mine is locked at 40 fps, not 30. I tried unlocking the frame rate, but then it becomes a stuttery mess. Gameplay experience is much better at locked 40 fps.

IIRC there were some benchmarks showing i3 processors running the game at or almost at 30fps.

The game is running in a borderless window capped at half of your desktop resolution's refresh rate.

I run the game with an unlocked frame rate in game R_swapinterval -0 commmand and force vsync through the driver and it runs very smooth,
very occasionally it will drop in out side areas to around 55 fps but in doors its a locked 60 fps all the way. I found using R_swapinterval -1 locked 60 caused massive dips to 30 fps
My specs are r9 290x vapour x i7 4790k samsung ssd

I have a GTX 580 and i7-875k @ 3.5GHz and the game is 30 with some dips to mid 20s during some certain parts of the game.

If you're using a 360-gamepad the sight constantly jumps off in either a straight x- or y-axis while trying to aim diagonally which is mostly down to a bad implementation of the controller since most other games doesn't have this issue.
Using a Dualshock 4 though pretty much all of these "stair case aiming issues" are gone. Just for the sake of it I plugged mine in to see if the aiming was better with a DS4 in this game. Compared to using a 360-gamepad that is and indeed it is. Like night and day!
Though I'd share.

For some reason it's not any real difference at all. Was down to a particular area I tried it in.

Are you playing this with a controller? I don't really like playing at 30fps either way but I'm kind of okay with it when using a controller but as soon as i pick up a mouse in that game being limited to 30fps bothers me a lot. I just cant stand the added inputlag due to higher frametimes (but to be fair, I'm kind of picky when it comes to mouse responsiveness).

I have just started the game and played the first ~40mins once with 30fps and a controller and once with 60fps and mouse and have yet to choose which combination I'll use. The beginning is a complete mess for me framerate wise, but the area right after has been a much better experience for me at 60fps with a mouse. However, i obviously don't know what to expect of the game down the road: Are there many more areas where the framerate goes apeshit like in the beginning?

I am about to start the game, I have an i7 870, so I will return to report the results.

I have a GTX 780 with a 4670k (nothing overclocked) frame rates are not an issue, works quite well at 30. I only notice the lower frame rate when opening doors with a crank.

My view was that the black bars were there to increase the feeling of claustrophobia and unease, so it seems counter productive to remove them. I think the camera is deliberately placed that close to the player - some parts of the game do not work as well without that narrow field of view.

Have not noticed any gamepad issues - wired 360 controller.

game runs beautifully on my 2500k (oc) and HD 6950 (firmwared to 6970).

Not sure if this is due to the black bars - they give the game a nice cinematic feel IMO

Have you tried the mod that takes the bars out? I have a 6950 too and I was wondering if my PC would run properly with that mod.

Anyone else have any impressions with an AMD 6950? Or just a general idea of the performance hit the mod has?

Yup they said that from the moment we knew that bars will be in the game. It's just like 16:9 for re4 to be cinematic (excuse the foul language). But somehow people went berserk and apeshit and just scream around. And so they forget and sometimes even accused them to take bars, only because of performance problems ...

If that's the case it's a super super cheap way of achieving it.

But honestly, I don't believe that really is the reason.

I have run across at least one area where if they were not present would become very easy.

Yes. That's a very good example of bad game design (if it is by design).

If you want to make a challenge - make it a challenge with the help of different game mechanics, enemies etc. and not by cutting the screen by half.

If you want to make it claustrophobic - make it claustrophobic by using the tools within the game (i.e. level design, graphics) not by cutting the screen by half.

I can't wait until we're at a point where difficulty sets the size of black bars in a game. No bars is too easy and for casuals.

Imagine Dark Souls 3 on "Impossible" (resolution 1920x1)

Do you have a 120Hz monitor? I do, and the game is locked at 40 FPS for me because of it.

I guess I should've posted this here instead of the OT:

Just wanna chime in about PC: I'm running this game on an i5 2500k with 4GB and a GT560 with no issues (playing on my TV at 1366 x 768). All I did was disable FXAA and things were fine. So you can pretty much ignore the official system requirements lol.
