The Evil Within PC Performance Thread

Flawless Widescreen fix is nearly, well, flawless but the bloom fix doesn't appear to be functional (yet).

No, it's functional but you're not gonna see any difference if you're using a normal 16:9 monitor.

What does bloom fix do when running flawless widescreen?
Nothing if you're using a 16:9 monitor. It's a bloom fix for aspect ratios wider than 16:9.

There's no harm having it enabled even if you're on 16:9 though.

Just tried the 60fps CFG change, sorry, but this a stuttery, unmanageable mess. Are some of you really playing the game like this?

This game really is a 30fps game, unless a patch comes along. And it's fine. Been playing at a locked 30fps for 8 hours without any issues.

That is a....weird justification.

Because the game isn't great at 60fps for you doesn't mean that others aren't having a more consistent 60fps experience. If it's not locked 60 with consistent frametimes then yeah it'll definitely look juttery. But if you can get something consistent (which seems to be the difficulty) then there don't seem to be any other issues with running it at 60fps.

Is this game really locked at 30 fps? I just started playing and mine is locked at 40 fps, not 30. I tried unlocking the frame rate, but then it becomes a stuttery mess. Gameplay experience is much better at locked 40 fps.

Do you have a 120hz monitor? Apparently people with 120hz monitors are getting it locked down to 40fps if they don't mess with the framerate at all. So 1/3rd your refresh rate.

Flawless widescreen mod is beautiful!

Oh, just seemed noticeably brighter to me.

I believe that what you are seeing is indeed more light since the black borders are now gone. Also, with increased FOV you now can see the lamp hanging from MC belt, which is indeed almost too bright.

Is there any way to modify how the lantern looks in this game? I have the FOV set so I don't see it as much, but whenever I do see it it's like looking directly into the sun.

Flawless widescreen makes the game crash at a certain point all the time.
Right before the cutscene in which you find Kidman in a tight spot.

If you're using a 360-gamepad the sight constantly jumps off in either a straight x- or y-axis while trying to aim diagonally which is mostly down to a bad implementation of the controller since most other games doesn't have this issue.
Using a Dualshock 4 though pretty much all of these "stair case aiming issues" are gone. Just for the sake of it I plugged mine in to see if the aiming was better with a DS4 in this game. Compared to using a 360-gamepad that is and indeed it is. Like night and day!
Though I'd share.

For some reason it's not any real difference at all. Was down to a particular area I tried it in.

How are you using your DS4, with the DS4 Input tool? Because that's what I'm using and the aiming is impossible, I can't aim diagonally at all :(

Any help?

EDIT: No matter what program I use, the aiming is still off. I get that weird stair-case issue.

Guys
1080p and I'm at Chapter 13, I have been playing with a steady 50-60fps throughout the game. AMD 280x

Is this normal? By everyone's reports I was expecting the framerate to go to shit.

It feels like the location of the lantern was very specifically placed in accordance to the black bars because with the default camera/aspect ratio it never bothers the player and only makes the glare visible when crouching.

With the black bars the lantern is always hidden underneath so never causes issues. But once I remove the black bars and fix the FOV so that the visible horizontal area is similar to how it was before removing the black bars, the lantern glare will pop in and out of screen when Sebastian is running. EXTREMELY annoying and painful to watch, increasing the FOV further means the the poping in and out stops but now the glare is always on screen which is still annoying and decreasing the FOV means I get lower FOV than what I would get if I never removed the bars in the first place. Removing the filter in the game seems to do nothing about the glare and takes away from the game's atmosphere so that's useless too.

I guess I'll just play the game with black bars, the fix causes the game to become more distracting than black bars. Plus the fact that a lot of cutscenes and such are built around the black bars so the area where teh black bars should be would still be visible if the game wants to do something like a fade to black.

You can turn the lantern off, but yeah, playing the game as it was intended to be played results in a better experience.

I played it with forceaspectratio 2.2, seemed like a good compromise for me.

I'm experiencing an odd glitch where white lines form on characters in a grid >_>

Some screens of what I mean:

5tgb.png

I've tried fiddling with the in game settings but nothing helps, I've tried looking online but found nothing. I'm also running the latest Nvidia WHQL drivers.
They're not part of the game itself.... are they? Cause they look very distracting in game.

Really wish I had gone with the PC version on this one. It must be amazing to play this at a rock-solid framerate.

The black bars I was originally in favor of have also started to annoy me. The HUD does not keep these in mind, on the PS4 version I sometimes don't even see the button prompts because they are 'underneath' the black bars.

I've had similar issues with Ansiotropic Filtering before, perhaps try disabling it, as well as in your drivers, and see if that changes anything?

The game doesn't have AF option and I don't have it forced via my control panel either.
I'll keep trying to find out what could be causing it. But I'll hold off playing it for now cause it looks pretty terrible in game...
Trying the steam forums now...

I'm in chapter 4 and I've noticed something... weird. I'm playing the game at 30 FPS (... ugh) with the Flawless Widescreen hacks enabled, meaning no black bars, with a GTX 680. SLI doesn't work, thanks id Tech 5.

The game so far has run perfectly fine, or at least as perfectly as this game could run given how locked everything is in it. But now, in chapter 4, there's a very precise location where the usage of my GPU goes to 99%, the temperature spikes to the low 70ºs and the fan, of course, speeds up to the max. It happens exactly when I enter one of the house right at the beginning of the chapter, where there's a certain character doing something:
Dr. Jimenez's brother, chopping up a guy
. Lowering the settings doesn't seem to do anything at all.

Has anyone encounter any other spot in the game where this happens? I'm honestly not enjoying this game as much as I would like to, and if I'll have to put up with even more technical difficulties, I might as well just give up.

Put the grain amount from 100 to 50 and with Flawless Widescreen you can actually see shit now. So much better. It feels a bit like the difference of surfing the web on a 4'' mobile screen vs on a 30'' 2560x1440 display

It seems like the glitch I had went away once I got indoors and a certain cut scene played which takes you to the next area of the prologue.
Maybe the rain was causing it? I just finished CH2 and haven't seen it happen again... weird.

So apparently Bethesda is thinking of implementing 60FPS and Widescreen by default

http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1509198-pc-update/

I hope they pull through, I haven't had any FPS issues yet and the flawless widescreeen mod does a decent job even though the letterboxing doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would, it's still pretty damn annoying though.

I prefered playing with letterbox since the game clearly wasn't made for having the fullscreen

But the 30 FPS had to go. Played with 60 throughout all the game. Much better experience

That makes sense. I hadn't played it much before going full-screen with FW.

Really? what kind of setup do you have?? I don't think anyone has been able to play at 60fps constant throughout the whole game..

I definitely don't get 60 all of the time, but the performance isn't all that bad. Most importantly for me, it's stable area to area. I'm not getting big framerate fluctuations as I move through the stages. I'd say it's generally in the high 40s or 50s if not at 60. No screen tearing, either.

On Flawless Widescreen: I've actually kept the default aspect ratio/black bars and adjusted FOV instead. I set it to 9 even and it's perfect.

I'm really interested in this game, but for some reason I want to play it on the living room PS4 instead of the "office" PC. So my question is, is the ps4 version at least decent? Or is the PC version so much better that it would be stupid of me?

Specs on the PC are GTX 680, 8GB of RAM and i5 2500K@4.4 GHz.

General consensus is that between PS4 vs PC, a modest PC can match PS4 settings, except with a more stable framerate at 30fps.

If you decide to take advantage of other PC features, like fullscreen or 60fps, be prepared for a fairly inconsistent experience, as performance varies wildly.

As things are going now, the PC version isn't monumentally better than the PS4 - but the PC version can always get better.

Much as I want to play this now I'm going to wait and see what patches and driver updates do. I can't justify paying full price for a game I'm not confident my PC will run properly.

When I say steady 60fps, I probably had drops in some parts down to 50 in worst case scenario. 90% of the time it was locked at 60fps.

I have a 280X and a i5 3500k

It's impossible, I have a superclocked GTX 780 and even I can't get 60FPS 90% of the time. It goes up to 60 quite a bit but most of the time it stays in mid 40s or low 50s and in a lot of outdoor areas it will go down to high 30s.

well what kind of cpu do you have? Per core Cpu Perf is far more important in this game as it doesnt appear to load balance correctly.

I need to run some tests, but I swear I never had the framerate go down as low as 40
Mind you I'm playing with black bars.

Can you point me some areas so I can check the framerate again?

Yeah playing on 1080p with regular borders/fov. Film grain and motion blur off, everything else on max. Is at 60fps most of the time but lots of random dips and stutters.

780 Ti, 4770k

Very beginning part where you first take control outside of the building, mine dropped as far as 30-something

Hopefully they reduce the lantern glare so people can play with an increased FOV and no bars. It seems like the glare will be an issue even if they patch away bars and increase the FOV in-house.
I'm over half way through the game and I hardly ever use the lanter except to very briefly turn it on to check for items in a dark room. 90% of the time it is off.

I guess it depends on the person. I like exploring nooks and crannies so I might end up using it a lot and there have been a lot of mentions of the lantern being excessively bright with no bars and an increased FOV.
