The Evil Within vs. Alan Wake, if you had to choose one, which one wins?

I like both, but I'd go with The Evil Within. I don't really remember thinking much of Alan Wake's story, but it's been awhile, so after that you have gameplay, and I enjoyed playing TEW far more than Alan Wake (I still enjoyed it though).

I thought Alan Wake was boring, i appreciate what it was trying to do, but the combat was way too repetitive, and you fight the same model shadow ghost things throughout the whole game.

I've finished Alan Wake, but not the Evil Within (only 3 hours of playtime), but what i saw from that 3 hours was very similar to Resident Evil 4's gameplay but with more survival gameplay added in.

To me the Evil Within trumps Alan Wake, and i'm surprised so many here prefer Alan Wake.

I choose Evil Within because I actually played it through to completion.

I liked Alan Wake but it did not hold my interest long enough so I could finish it. I would like to go back and try again someday.

Evil Within kinda sucked, but if it really came down to it the one area it beats AW is in it's gameplay/combat, which is probably the most important area of all and AW's combat is really garbage... But yeah... Everything else, atmosphere, story, etc... AW shits on EW.

The Evil Within for me. Alan Wake is just kind of... bland? The Evil Within might be a janky mess sure, but its a fun and interesting janky mess whereas Alan Wake is an uninspired as Dark Souls II. The Evil Within on the other hand evokes an engrossing atmosphere and those monster designs are the stuff of nightmares.

Alan Wake's art direction and atmosphere trumped the mess that was Evil Within. Evil just felt like it was trying to be far too many things to me.

Alan Wake has good gameplay, a fun story, a cohesive world (with consistent graphics all the way through) and good characters. It's got a lot of things The Evil Within lacks, but the one thing TEW has over Alan Wake is the gameplay. Most people who grew up with old school RE and RE4 can appreciate how nicely TEW handles it's battle scenarios, how nicely balanced the weapon system is and how finely tuned the enemy/boss encounters are. It's not the most optimized game graphically, but the shadows, texture work, environments, and sound production are of absolutely great quality in TEW.

I vote for The Evil Within, but they're both great horror games doing things differently than REmake, RE4 Dead Space, SIREN or Silent Hill.

The Evil Within, for sure.

Great post-release support on the console side, too. That last patch that removed the letterboxing was great.

I loved the atmosphere of Alan Wake but I had more fun playing The Evil Within. I'll actually started a second save on TEW on a harder difficulty mode but only made it to like ch 7. I've never had the urge to play Alan Wake again after I beat it. Maybe I'll pop it in again sometime this year.

Alan Wake has much better characters are story, no doubt. Nut I kind of like The Evil Within just a little bit more on the game play side. I found that there was more variation in the Evil Within and I did like some of the locals and settings. I enjoyed both though.

My vote's on Alan Wake. It's a short game, but one of the most memorable experiences I've had of the 360/PS3 generation. The Evil Within I barely made it past the third chapter because it felt like a poor man's Resident Evil 4. :\

(Fun little detail, but Alan Wake PC has perfect support for the 21:9 aspect ratio that The Evil Within basically uses. It's also really good, thanks to the expanded field of view, unlike the cramped view of The Evil Within....)

Alan Wake has a lot more going on.

Core gameplay mechanics in Evil Within are better and Evil Within is an actual horror game, but the level design, enemy design, checkpointing and encounter design is just garbage as opposed to simply repetitive.

Alan Wake, it's repetitive, but it works as a game, good storytelling, etc.

Evil Within has more variation, but it's a really bad game, and bad characters and story.

I got bored after playing the Evil Within for an hour and never came back to it.

Alan Wake is great and one of the few totally worthwhile "AAA," games of last-gen.

So Alan Wake easily.

I haven't even played Alan Wake and I'm picking Alan Wake. TEW was not only a disappointing game, it was incredibly forgettable.

No idea how anyone could like the cast of TEW more, if anything that's the weakest part of the game. Sebastian is barely a character.

Which is a shame given the concept of the series should have allowed for some great character stuff.

Alan Wake by far. It isn't without its issues, but I thought it was a mostly solid and interesting game. Evil Within also had its moments, but I found it to be an overall mess of many ideas that didn't quite gel together by its end.

Evil Within had more fun gameplay at points, but it's head was too far up it's own ass to have an actual story.

Wake had better characters, story, setting, and well, everything else really. Evil Within was too schizophrenic with it's design choices to the point where I don't even know what kind of game they were going for... @_@

"It's survival horror with limited ammo and stealth gameplay BUT WAIT HERE HAVE A MONSTER GENERATOR!"
