The Gaming Websites of Yesteryear

For Japanese stuff, Mr. Cube's site (can't remember what it was called, but it's the ONLY website I can think of where a Japanese writer did journalism over press releases) and TheMagic-Box (still around, but AndriaSang does it better now.)

Also, used to shop Lik-Sang quite a bit during the day even if I didn't buy anything.

I actually liked Daily Radar, was sad to see it go. The GIA was the bee's knees too.

Isn't it GamesRadar now? Or is there too much editorial difference for it to even count? Yeah, I remember DailyRadar...good times! :)

Oh shit, use to go to this site all the time to find out about Japanese games.

I completely forgot about that! Yeah, now Anoop updates Andriasang a lot. It used to be that the Magic Box was the place ofr Japanese gaming rumors, etc.

VG-Force.com
gamesarefun.com
The-magicbox.com

Those were my big 3. No one else probably remembers VG-Force but the forums were great and they were great at championing hidden gems like Breakdown.

The Odyssey of Hyrule.

I hardly remember the early days of the internet for me though, it was just random browsing.

I mainly remember video game related angel fire and other free site pages with cheats or screenshots. I used to go a video game news site daily but I forgot what it was called.

There's this one too. Want to say, it was my message board before coming here. I remember talking to Diablos there, then running into each other here.

Used to go on FFO for the embedded java IRC. Used to chat with my friends on there all the time because we were too dumb to know about proper IRC clients.. the main room #FFO used to auto ban/kick me on sight due to my ISP.. always by a guy named Barrett. Fucker.

in some ways i think that all these old gaming web sites have more journalistic integrity than professional ones nowadays.

i remember using IGN before they became a big corporate monster.

The one. The only. The Gia.

Nailed it.

There was also this French website called the-Sugoi that I used to visit quite often along with the GIA. I had no idea MMCafe and Magicbox were still around!

The GIA, Next Generation online and CheatPlanet all bring back memories. IGN bought out or merged with a lot of sites I used to use back then also. N64.com and shit like that I think were merged into IGN.

Nintendonation/next
Nintendojo
PlanetN2000
Tendobox

I was all about Nintendo back in the day.

Others were Cloudchaser, TeamXbox

Now it is bothering me. There was some Nintendo site that spun off and loved sunny faces.
It is hurting me to now forget the name of the site..anyone? Remembered..Nintendorks.

Most of these sites are gone, shadows of themselves or were never that good to begin with..

I was active mostly on the gearbox forums and modacity all because of the halo custom edition community while it was kicking.

I am probably the only person who thought Salamando's Stove was cool. They were sort of a videogame humor site - not much real news, just two dorks (Evk and Wrexsoul) making dumb jokes about Playstation games and visual novels. They also had a "webcomic", which is to say they just let MSChat run during IRC or whatever and then clipped out the funny parts.

Near the end of its tenure sometime in 2002 or 2003 they started getting a little too weird. Their webcomic was replaced with what can best be described as "junk", where they tried to make Jeff K style stuff that was awful on purpose, but I always thought it was just actually awful. The quality of their writing tanked pretty hard, too, or at least however much I could tell when I was 16 or however old I was when this site was still updating. Then they announced they were starting a new site, Subway Pervert Attack, but that was a bust, too.

I read parts of Salamando now and I kind of cringe, but I guess it's a product of its time. For example, a fairly lengthy article dogging on Andrew Vestal, if any of you remember who that is. Or how about an article about the death of the Zero Wing meme? (with a pretty choice screencap of Cliffy B, might I add) And there was a time when I laughed at this interview with Nall from Lunar. Maybe I still do crack a smile. Maybe I do.

There was another site I hung around a lot at, but damn if I can remember it's name now. Some old Sega Dreamcast fansite, like, Sega 2000 or something? I completely forget. I just remember reading an article on there once about character design in Sonic the Hedgehog that blew my mind at the time.

I also hung around on a site called Bigmog a lot.

Anyone here remember Nintendose? It was huge before the gamecube launch. Haha, I remember spending hours there talking about games and they would do a weekly chat. I was a mod there too.

CheatCC was a top-visit for me back in the day. If I need help I'm more likely to look up a guide on GameFAQS nowadays.

I used 1up pretty frequently as well during its prime. It was before Twitter so it was cool to be able to connect with the writers from EGM and other outlets and gamers online via the site.

For blog purposes - I would read Insert Credit back when it was updated regularly.

there was a site i visited regularly in 1996 with lots of info about japanese only games, but sadly, i don't remember the name anymore. it had a couple of stamp-size screenshots per game and a brief description. helped me with many obscure games. i don't know if it was PSX only or a mixed site with PSX/SAT. what was the name? anime games? i seriously don't remember.

also a couple of non-english sites.

Mostly gamefaqs when I was young. I remember printing off a FAQ for Pokemon when I was 6 or so and it using a shit ton I paper at my fathers work.... Also 1up and gamespot..... Now it's just GAF.

Hmm... Which site had these "vaults" sub-sites? I remember going to NWNvault and BGvault for stuff. I also remember downloading patches and such from fileplanet. I also ahd some horrible site for looking up cheats, but I can't remember what's it called.
