Is PSP background is mandated by Sony or something? Because it looks stupid to watch small video on even smaller screen.

It's the resolution of the output I believe, I wouldn't want them to stretch it and make it fit. The PSP is there to make it look nice I think.

yea, sorta sucks when i'm watching on the iPod Touch.

Nah, it's just their own choice to do it, I'm thinking it messes with the aspect when you blow it up to full screen. I know on earlier PSP games they did it without the system showing.

I think your right. I remember seeing Vinny comment about it in another video.
 
are they capturing the video directly off the PSP? I would think they would link the PSP up to a HDTV and capture it off the TV since it would also be much easier to do quick look that way.

Or who knows, maybe Vinny was looking over Jeff's shoulder the whole time as if they were in elementary school.

From my very limited PSP experience (my first one is coming in the mail), when you output video from PSP to a TV (or, in this case, to a computer with a Capture Card), the image does not fill the entire screen.

They chose not to stretch the image to fill the entire screen. Instead, they add a background (the same way they do with 4x3 games, like Persona). It's called "keeping a proper aspect ratio", something most people (of dubious opinions) are not aware of.

Here is this morning's "for the record" moment!

- With regards to PSP videos, they look like poop from a butt if we stretch them out to fill that window, even if we stretch it while maintaining the aspect ratio.

- We are not exactly stoked about the way the ODST ad stuff has gone. It's a bit much. But it's a learning process, so we're spending time talking about how to get stuff like this right next time. I have to imagine that Microsoft isn't 100% pumped about the ads, either, since it just sort of gets driven into your skull time and time again.

- The ads are US-only. The bummer about that is that if we had our entire userbase looking at those video ads, they'd probably be done already. This, I suppose, is the price of being beloved around the world. So tell your American friends to visit the site more often?

I'm from Brazil and I've been seeing the ads and videos recently - now, they're gone again.

You guys either have a problem on your IP Geo Localization routine/databse or the ADs were being pumped to countries other than America the last week. Not that I mind.

Edit: However, ODST was released down here, officially, on the 22nd... So maybe that has something to do with it?
 
Like I said before the only part of the ODST ad stuff that bothered me was the site skin on the home page. It's not a huge deal but it just feels over the top to me. To be honest, it made me cringe the first time I saw it.

If I were watching tons of short videos on the site, the 17 sec ODST ad would have annoyed me but since the videos I'm watching are like 10 mins to an hour and a half long, it didn't faze me.

In the end, as long as the ads don't really get in the way of the content and the advertisers don't effect the content on the site, I'm cool. I just want Giant Bomb to be successful so they can continue to entertain me.

The ODST stuff is a bit much. Though having watched the PAX Panel I was prepared to see more ads and things change with the site.

Side note, LONGEST QUICK LOOK EVER FOR BANCHO, man...but so awesome. Best feature of the site (outside of reviews)

Hey man,

I loved your Kenko Bancho quicklook, you guys are too funny. I really watched the whole quicklook :lol .

The ODST ads aren't that annoying ( for me at least ). You guys need to make money, and ads are the way to do it. But I'm from the Netherlands so maybe that's why I don't see them so often.

Anyway keep up the great work.
 
I haven't seen a single ODST ad. Probably because of the script installed as a security measure and not for ad-blocking purposes. I'll put GB in the friend zone if that helps.
 
I've been browsing a lot of giantbomb recently, getting ads before nearly every vid, and it honestly doesn't bother me. Neither does the site banner stuff. Doesn't get in the way of accessing the content, so it's well worth it. Yeah, the Bancho stuff was hilarious. It was super long for a quick look, but went well with lunch.
 
The only part of the ads that bother me is that something about the way cartoon Jeff looks in the banner ads just looks... off. Can't quite put my finger on it.
 
I get the ads in the UK, too.

It's really cool your approach to ads, Jeff, and it's nice to see that you recognise yourself how the ODST ones may not have been perfect. With that said, I don't think anyone who is a fan of a site really gives that much of a damn. :)

I'm in Canada and I see the ads and the little ODST vid before all other videos. I see it before every video as well, I was under the impression it was to be once daily or what not. Not a huge deal though (if I cared I'd turn on AdBlockPlus)
 
It only appears on new videos though. I've been going through endurance run again and all the old ones are ad free.

That said, I guess the ODST stuff will disappear soon.

I wonder if login in will stop them from repeating so much? I keep getting logged out and I never remember to log back on because their logon system is a pop-up window.

The Quick Looks do a really good job of constantly drawing me to the site / iPhone App. I used to rarely visit the site, but I am always checking it out now.

But please, sweet Jesus, where's a white background option? Mah eyes!!!
 
Nice quick look indeed. I've been playing the demo quite a bit, pretty great, and they showed a nice chunk of the fun. Best looking PSP game thus far, lets see 3rd Birthday best it.
 
Ill never understand the hatred of ads for things like this. Inside games and movies and stuff sure, but they provide so much content and its all free, running a couple of ads is hardly some big insult.
