I found his phone, what do I do with it?

I don't understand the difficulty Jeff had there. I completed that section on my first try. :\

I had to fast forward that part after the first fail. Surprised Ryan wasn't so eager to rip the controller from Jeff's hands to give it a try.

Child of Eden..eh, I like Rez, but it seems to fit better as an XBLA release than a full retail. I suppose the Kinect moniker alone allows MS to differentiate the Kinect retail shelf-space though.

Looking forward to the Alice QL, despite limp reviews I'm still intrigued.

Space Phoenix is a helluva wingman.

Miz should've toned down on the LSD when designing Child of Eden. Thing looks even more abstract than Rez, that's kind of an achievement. It just looked like random shit thrown together in that QL.

Alice is one ugly ass game. Those textures look horrible.

Probably not playing with the new Nvidia GT590xtreme card with PhysX hyperrendering turned to the maxest! It's the only way to experience Alice.

The liquid shit looks amazing. I hate the floor shattering stuff though, that always pissed me off in Tekken too, you get an impact, some of the floor breaks, then magically disappears, looks stupid.

The lava areas of Alice remind me of the Goron Mines from Twilight Princess in a big way. Game looks good, the combat seems nice and vicious which is cool.

The combat in Alice looks really nice and I'm glad to see it's not mash till everyone dies type of game.

I'm probably gonna buy it this week.

Did I say something inaccurate?
You have to see it on your screen, the giantbomb videos have HORRIBLE compression artifacts, even in HD quality. They said their amazon cloud server is the reason at one point.

Yet they still have the best looking videos of games on the internet outside of gamersyde...

It's UE3.0 so it could probably run max'd out at 60fps on a netbook, PhysX notwithstanding.

Is Child of Eden really 90 minutes long like Ryan claimed? That seems like a poor value proposition. Not really my kind of game anyway, so whatever.
Rez was also short. This is a shooter at heart. You are meant to replay it over and over again, trying to get the best score.

Yea, I don't understand why people are puzzled by this. They should look back at other rail shooters like Panzer Dragoon Orta and Sin & Punishment.

Regardless of how beautiful videos are, you really have to play Lumines, Rez, Every Extend Extra and (I guess you will) have to play Child of Eden to understand it. When you are just watching, the whole Synesthesia aspect of the games get lost. You are pretty much missing out on the big reason the games are compelling by not playing it.

Of course, that is not to say it is worth the current price tag.

I know rail shooters are generally more about getting the high score, but I can't think of a rail shooter I've played that is actually that short. It probably doesn't help that CoE appears to be totally devoid of any challenge, so it's not even an intense 90 minutes. It probably ramps up a bit as you approach the final level, but the quick look of the first two levels does not inspire much confidence.

Oh no, CoE is really hard. The first two levels are nothing in that quick look. The amount of purple bullets is insane on the later stages. The difficulty ramps up.

That's just farsical, even the layman VOD caster can render their video past 720p and slap it up on YouTube for it to be displayed natively. GameSpot allows streaming HD for non members, so people looking for trailers and general gameplay video may as well be looking there.

And it still blows my mind they haven't gone back and fixed this upload of theirs yet.

YouTube's "720p" isn't even DVD quality. Very few streaming videos are.

I've gotta say, watching the latest quick looks, Alice looks pretty interesting. I wasn't even interested in it before, but it looks pretty good to be honest , atleast from the quick looks point of view.

Just watched the Child of Eden QL. Looks trippy and I love what Vinny and Ryan were doing with Space Whale/Phoenix.

Started the DNF QL and about 8 mins in and it just seems like Jeff is trying to make the game look bad (though it's the 360 version so he doesn't need to try hard).
I mean dying on the elevator part (it' really is easy, just break untill the bar is almost full, cool off for like 1/4, break again) and then jumping straight into a pit on the Hive. Just seems like he wants to show as much loading as possible.

I understand the bad review scores for the console versions a bit more now though. I mean I'd be bitter and more critical after those load times for every new area or every time I die. The PC loads are like 10-20 seconds max for a new level and a LOT shorter when you die.

EDIT: It's no wonder that every modern day shooter is a linear corridor fest. When Jeff was given just an ounce of exploration he had trouble finding his way =/

Doesn't seem like it would be hard with the PC version, either. The game looks goddamn atrocious and not fun to play in any of the footage I've seen.

Also, as Jeff said, a weapon pickup or some other form of "HEY, GO THIS WAY" indication would have helped. In every Valve commentary I've seen they talk about lighting important spots or leaving a metaphorical "breadcrumb trail" (weapon/ammo pickups, more colorful scenery, enemies, etc.) for players to follow so they don't get lost for no good reason. They could have easily added in such techniques. Being non-linear is no excuse for shitty level design.

Why is anyone looking for any excuse possible to defend this trash? It would have felt dated and unfunny/lame in 2001, nevermind 2011.

You don't get it. It's a masterpiece. Ask everyone that had their pre-order for 10 years.
It's the enthusiast press conspiracy. Only the Germans have the real score with their 8/10. :-P

"[T]rying to make the game look bad" is just the best.

XD
I'm not saying it's a masterpiece or anything. Just that with very bad load times on the 360 it probably would have been best for Jeff to show a part of the game where he wouldn't die like 3 times then pick a new area and jump straight into a pit giving us more load time.
Just kinda annoying. Not really his fault and I know he's not really doing it on purpose.

Just think there might've been better places to show the game off than a section where you have to do a simple action thingie that Jeff himself admitted to being horrible at (granted, he forgot it was there but he should have quit out of it the first time he died rather than reload).
I guess my main point is fuck the 360 loading speed, I wanted to see more of them laughing at the game than the load screens.

Child of Eden will now support move? Looks like it would be awesome in 3D if it don't support that. For the effects I mean. Gameplay don't look that interesting to me.

Seeing Child of Eden being played with a controller and essentially becoming Rez 2 is like the ultimate summation of most if not all Kinect support.

That being said, the game is beautiful, as expected.

HUh, what do you mean. Both schemes work and play great.

If the game plays as good on gamepad as it does with Kinect, well, why bother spending money on Kinect?

If you already have a Kinect I guess it's pretty cool but outside of being a crazy early adopter who needs everything the moment it comes out, or being the sort of person tricked in to buying one on accident, owning a Kinect does not seem like the kind of thing one should currently be proud of.

I guess I just saw Child of Eden as, like, my Kinect Killer App. It would be the Kinect game that gets everything right and shows me a totally new experience and sells everybody on the concept. It was the game I figured I would need Kinect to experience "the right way".

But it's not that at all. It's Rez 2, and you lose basically nothing by subtracting Kinect integration.

Which means: SURPRISE! The game I thought would sell me on Kinect actually plays just fine on a gamepad.

Sorry but how would you know all this by watching someone play as opposed to experiencing the thing yourself? Sounds like you made up your mind ahead of time. A lot of reviews have suggested that the Kinect adds a new depth and sense of immersion to the game.

Hey, it's not great design, but it IS very late 90s. This is exactly how games like SiN were designed. I can't say I've had any problems navigating myself, but for those who have completely forgotten those older games, I'd imagine it might be much more difficult.

The replay stuff in AE looks cool. The fact that the first match that came up when jeff went into it being two of the most prolific and most skilled players makes the filtering system seem good at least.
