This will sound cynical but I think it might depend on how many of the original subscribers are retained after the first year is up. If a significant number of people don't renew, I wouldn't be surprised to hear them announce a members-only ER.
I've given up hope. I don't think any of them wanna do them anymore.

Wow, Journey is much nicer on the eyes than I was expecting.
It looks pretty amazing in person. There's a couple of patches of slow down though, I wonder if we'll see improvements by the time it's out.

They've implied that they probably couldn't do a members-only ER, because charging to watch a complete playthrough of a game puts them on sketchy legal grounds.

Their steadfast refusal to do another edition of the most popular thing they've ever done always confuses me.

It doesn't even have to a be a new game. Find a random PS2 RPG or even something older.

Maybe it's because it serves no journalistic value at all. It seems pretty clear Jeff wanted to foster a gonzo focus on the site, something Gamespot had already been doing a little with their podcasting, but he took it to the extreme with GB, they're practically minor celebrities who also write some reviews at this point. Maybe they feel there needs to be some semblance of journalism in something they're committing that much time too.

It's one of the reasons Top Gear is basically the best non-fiction show on TV, they have balanced informative content with entertainment better than anyone else.

Hmmm, a lot of Top Gear seems fictional to me.

Oh I hadn't heard that. On second thought, that would be pretty weird.

I think their reasons for putting Endurance Runs on extended hiatus have always been pretty sound. It has to feel natural and fun to them, the game has to be right, it shouldn't be dictated by the audience, or it will come off more like an obligation and not the magic we all hope/expect from that kind of feature. Not to mention it's a big time commitment for whoever is involved in the production. Obligations are not entertaining, their best ideas have always been spontaneous, and I trust them to bust it out again when everything falls into place.

Edit: Hell, the Game Room quick looks probably count as the most recent ER, seeing as it had a definitive beginning and end and Jeff played everything in there on camera. It wasn't a single game with a quirky story but it was an idea that came naturally to them, and it ended up being a great feature that will, ahem, endure.

I am offended by the existence of this shitty EDF game. God it looks so awful and it's clearly garbage trying to exploit the goodwill the previous games built up.

I am also saddened by Giant Bomb's EDF2017 bashing. It was a legitimately great game. Just because the vehicles controlled terribly and the graphics were poor and the framerate sucked doesn't make it a bad game. The scale of the enemies and their massive numbers and the destructible city and the huge armory of powerful weaponry and the hilarious cheese provided an experience that other games can't match. I would especially like to call out Ryan's comments that EDF2017 was tedious and the levels dragged on forever. That's something unique to this game. EDF you either mopped up or got swarmed and died, and there were few levels longer than ten minutes.

I think that comparison does a disservice to Giant Bomb, for the reason Riposte infers above.

especially as this time of year when there are literally NO games coming out and GB has no other interesting videos coming out.

Do they need permission publisher to do an endurance run?
As long as there is commentary over the gameplay to make it Giantbomb's own thing there is nothing a publisher can do.

They'd have to prove fair use in court. A publisher could stop them, if for no other reason than legal fees.

It sounds like they obtain permission from the publisher beforehand. I can't imagine too many publishers would green light an endurance run.

Anyone get the feeling that maybe Kessler is gonna join the Giant Bomb staff after his second intership is over? The GB crew clearly likes him enough to bring him back and they even let him write a review (not for a high profile release but still) which seems pretty significant to me.

I would think if any Intern did get hired it would be him. He's okay I like him well enough and I think he interacts pretty well with the rest of the crew

I agree that this would be a stopper, but Youtube has already given precedent for what people can do with Let's Plays, and even people making new videos commenting over notoriously bad Let's Plays. I highly doubt Youtube would green light that stuff if the legal ground was shaky, but I could be wrong.

i wouldn't be surprised. but i will avoid any video features he's in.

depends on the publisher. i've watched videos of LP people who complained that their LPs were taken down because the publishers requested it. it's usually for LPs of new games that just came out.

i don't think the GB dudes need to ask for permission but they might just so they don't need to take it down later.

Opinions, man. Ugh. They are so annoying sometimes.

I sure hope not. Never really read reviews or news on giantbomb so if that is what he is going to do, fine. But it's so fucking painful listening to him, the sound of a spider in your ear is more pleasant than his voice.

Indeed, the publishers don't care enough to stop people. I think a film would be a different thing, but games are meant to be operated, watching them is a fundamentally different experience, I don't believe for a second it hurts sales. In fact I'm sure it's the opposite. Lots of people probably bought DP because of GB.

It could happen, sure.

I just hope GB always finds the time for just the original 4 though.

Got to give him time, most of the GB crew have been doing video content for a decade. Chemistry will also develop when they get over the "haze the new guy" schtick.

Examples? Sounds hilarious.

i'm watching it now and Kessler's comments are actually informative but something about his voice is killing it for me. still, gonna keep watching.

Meh, he has been there for quite some time now and think we have given him lots of time, he is still as unfunny and annoying as ever. I didn't like Alex either but at least I could stand listening to him, Kessler just makes you want to pull your own hair out.

I don't see what's so bad about his voice, Alex Navarro's whiny pre-pubescent 15 year old voice is far more annoying than Kesslers. The only thing that irritated me about the QL was Ryan's non-stop making fun of Kessler, sure it's funny when Kessler screws up (like playing on easy) but when it's constant like this it just seems obnoxious. It sucks the fun out of the QL for me and just makes me feel bad for Kessler.

Just apply your feelings of this EDF game to EDF 2017 too and maybe you'll be able to understand where they're coming from. They're both incredibly niche.

i'm gonna say it again. Needs more Vinny.
Always true.

Kessler's voice is tough to listen to, but I can't stand the way Ryan sounds like a total uptight asshole during the Quick Look and Patrick joining him in the fucking old and stupid "Intern razzing" only makes it worse.

Another bad Quick Look.

I love how the GB staff acknowledges in the EDF QL blurb that not everyone likes Kessler:

"Insectaphobes Kesslerphobes beware!"

Anyway i don't think that Kessler is that bad, at least in the couple of segments i have seen him in.

I've finally figured out why I don't like Kessler. He's trying way too hard to emulate Ryan's speech pattens and mannerisms, like he's trying act like what he thinks the boss wants him to act. It's like he's trying to fit in, but he comes off as not genuine.

well isnt he staying with Ryan during this internship? He clearly likes the guy. I can totally see why Ryan might like him (or at least see himself in him) but I hope he is actually a hard worker and can bring something unique to the team (I havent seen anything unique from him yet)

I totally dont like whiskey medias policy of "well he is a nice guy so lets hire him". Look how crappy Screened turned out to be after they tried that.

But meh. If they do hire him I can always "vote with my dollar" as it where and just never re new my membership.

I've heard this said before but I never see it, personally. Does Patrick annoy you too? Patrick tries to mimic Ryan at every opportunity he gets.

That's why I hate patrick, he just follows what the other person is doing. If it's a positive QL he joins in, if it's like this he just does exactly what Ryan is doing, it's so annoying.
