The GTA 5 Trailer Talk Thread

Sad thing is this could really be 2013.
Highly unlikely. Vice City was announced May '02, shipped October '02; San Andreas was announced March '04, shipped October '04. IV was a little different, but they really announced it too early; probably MS pressure though, to make the 360 look more attractive.

I'm sticking with April/May 2012. I don't know about anyone else, but the game looked pretty far along judging by the trailer.

Game is nearly done. They are just waiting for next year.

Yeah my money is still on either May 2012 or at least October 2012. I can't count how many times I've watched this trailer now, the music, locale, and everything is just so gorgeous.

Is it just me or does that world map look really small?

EDIT: Maybe it's just zoomed in a lot....or I'm crazy.

This may sound crazy, but the vibe I got from the trailer feels like a summer game. Not a fall game. Plus like they did with Gta IV and RDR, they release in the late spring to an uncrowded market with no big releases.

The only problem I see with the 1st half of the year release date speculation is that they are ramping up with the Max Payne 3 previews and stuff. I can't see GTAV coming before that. Unless they do a March/April MP3 release, and June/July GTAV, I'm guessing GTAV is slated for October 2012.

That's not an unrealistic guess by any means. All of the recent Rockstar signature releases have been in April/May. If this generation is actually coming to an end soon, it makes more sense (to an unschooled boob like me) to release while there's still a solid part of the life cycle left. I'm thinking Spring 2012 as well.

One big city, two smaller.

Yeah, that sounds likely to me. San Diego is a no-brainer, even though it's kinda boring, but what would the other city be? Santa Barbara provides lots of fodder for Rockstar.

Kotaku picked up that story about the guy who tweeted the map, they found that earlier this year he posted a picture of an ad for GTA Los Santos, releasing 11-11-11.

What makes it's weird is that he knew it was Los Santos, how could someone have guessed that? Also maybe this fall was supposed to be the release date but they decided to push back to next spring.

Gta IV came out in May 2008, and given the fact they had most of the engine work done from Gta 4 and RDR, seems like plenty of time for the game to be ready.

That's my hometown and I would absolutely shit if they somehow included it in GTA.

When you say "provides lots of fodder" does that mean it'd just be a good place to do something, or have they taken shots at it before? (I never got to play San Andreas)

I don't think there was any equivalent of Santa Barbara in San Andreas. By fodder I just mean it's a picturesque town full of rich white people - they like skewering folks like that.

Mansions everywhere and no minorities would work pretty well

I really really really want to believe that list is true (aside from having to fill up gas in the car) all of it sounds so awesome.

I would also be in heaven if they finally implemented a first person view for driving, so i can see the city from the drivers view, steering wheel and all.

Hope this comes out in the spring next year, sooner the better, with any game other than GTA i can take a long wait, but once a GTA game is announced it's constantly on my radar and it's painful.

I've decided that once they announce any kind of time frame for GTAV's release, i'm gonna start with GTAIII and play all the way through it, Vice City, San Andreas, GTAIV and it's two expansion packs before V comes out. i'm hoping it'll be as fun as it sounds, and maybe help speed up the waiting.

Holy effing wow. This sounds like my perfect GTA, or the perfect videogame. That's why I don't believe it. If this is all true --> DROOL.

I find it highly suspect that a rouge gaming journalist with enough clout to actually get access to GTA V would be enough of an amateur to write like this:

The water effects, forna, plants, trees all looked beautiful.
Weapons include the usual arsenal you'd aspect but the flamethrowers, remote mines, laxer trip mines and claymores are included. It is possible now to pick up random objects in a street/buidling to use as a weapon. There is also a museam where it is possible to steal old age swords, axes, etc.
The player you start off which, much like CJ, can't be altered by race, age, height, etc.
There is now an ability to grab people and use as sheilds or in "hostage" situations.

And those are just the ones that really hurt my eyes, there's plenty more

Also this sentence pretty much cements it as some 15 year olds day dreams:
Cars can be upgraded/repaired and it has been considered to have a car have fuel forcing the player to fill her up.
This would either be in or out and would never be shared with a gaming journalist ahead of such a decision.

Yeah, that can't be the map. It's just way, way too dense even for Rockstar. Looks more like something pulled from Google Earth and photoshopped.

I'm happy to be wrong, though.

RE: People disappointed about it not being a new location. Look at it from this perspective:

Marketing
They were going to do something visually polar opposite from IV.
Liberty City was depressing, overcast, cold. Subdued color palate. Set in fall.
This looks sunny, warm. Diverse environments. Lots of bright colors. Glory days lighting.

This stands out. Catches people's eye which feeds into....

Sales
Both LA and NY are major markets. #2 and #1 in Pop Density, respectively. Suburbs and surrounding areas flock to these places for entertainment and employment. They are well known. There's a concept of "that's my city" even if you live just outside. Also the rapidly growing Latino market is a good market to tap.

Something New
I think DC would be your best bet as you could set that in the mid 00s and do a "Wire" type story but they've shown little interest in doing retro GTA games anymore and this is the 7th largest market. And as I said before you face the challenge of differentiating it from LC. And likely no way to work in countryside. Although I think the political angle would've been interesting. Could work in casinos here.

Chicago has a large base (3rd) but is very, very similar to NYC. A corruption angle would be interesting but that could easily and more appropriately worked in DC.

Conclusion
They're going a little safe for a down economy and using pre-existing legwork from Midnight Club and LA Noire, sure, but they're also setting it in a locale guaranteed to sell and please the mammothly large GTA fan base.

I see the "creative risks" that need to be taken more as gameplay changes not in the setting.

In short, LA makes sense. Only Los Santos makes a better game.

P.S. It was rumored awhile ago that it was Los Santos only when the casting/"RUSH" stuff leaked. This is not new news.

I don't believe Rockstar would do that. They'd go big or not at all.

Suburbs or little towns sure. But I really think this game is going to be just the one city. Unless they were being purposefully misleading in their press release.

also, Los Angeles is a city pretty much everyone outside US knows. we've seen it in the movies etc.

if a GTA game took place in Chicago or Detroit or some of the other cities people had suggested, as a European i'd just think "wtf, i know nothing about them"...

it's a global market you know! and i wish i could really visit LA :( GTAV will be the next best thing then i guess.

I agree. That being said, everyone's assuming tri-city would be what was in San Andreas, but I could potentially see a geographical triangle comprising LA, Palm Springs, and San Diego / Tijuana instead. Far smaller scale, you still get some (Indian) casinos / resorts, along with border smuggling / drug trade.

R* probably has no problem to release GTAV after a pair of months of Max Payne 3, Mp3 cames out of the limo in late september with the first trailer and then some pics, now less than one month later they dropped the bomb of GTAIV.

Mp3 will sell what it deserves in two months like all the not-huge-success games(I hope it isn't and it will be great) then It's time to GTAV.

delaying GTAV could cause a small dcrease of sales, and releasing it near mp3 could cause a small decrease of mp3 sales, but mp3 is probably going to sell at max 2 millions, GTAV around 25.

I don't know, even L.A. Noire is up around 4-5 million. Could easily see MP3 matching that at the least.

Looks like those are the highways.

Ok I didn't think about thick multi lane highways. That A shaped section looks like a jugular type artery while the normal roads are kinda blending in with the rest of the map.

Edit: April 24
