The Halo 3 Beta Thread

So, for the people that have the beta. Have you gone back to Halo 2 to see how dated it looks and feels? If so, please explain. Thanks. :D

I asked once before, but got mixed replies from users who never had hands on with the game. So, are the exploits gone completely in HALO 3's beta? BXR, BXB, Double Shot, etc.? Though I'm sure these have been addressed, I would love some confirmation.

Exactly what I wanted to hear. Bungie rendered the greatest MP game ever useless. The King is dead, long live the King!

Yea, they're gone.

To elaborate: Halo 3 feels very solid. Everything seems to have a bigger impact, and that's partly due to sound design, partly animation and partly weapon balance. The gameplay is smoother and more visceral than Halo 2 ever was.

In fact, if I had to choose one word to describe Halo 3 MP, it's flow. Everything flows together beautifully - level and weapon design, the HUD integration, the balance, the controls. What's in the Beta is just so much more polished than the finished Halo 2 game.

I know you to be well verse in the Halo world and you would know that this is the first game is isn't being rushed for a deadline. That is probably the reason for the flow that you speak of.

True - the development of H3 has been more orderly than the others, to put it lightly. You'll notice immidiately that the game just feels right when you fire it up. I'm really curious about reaction on Wednesday. The first several games I played were filled with "holy shit!" every few seconds from everyone involved. It really is that good, IMO.

thanks for all the replies regarding the crackdown beta invite, only bought it on a whim a a couple of days ago assuming that i'd missed the date for the beta hence the questions. must be fate, roll on tomorrow :)

Yea, Halo 3's aim assist is NOTHING like 2's though, thankfully.

I just started playing Halo about a half a month ago and I have to say that I've never played a game that had auto-aim like Halo 2 does. I feel as if I have no control over my cursor and it drives me nuts. I played Socom for several years and although I realize it's two totally different games, I did enjoy the aiming in Socom--free as a bird---even though hit detection was iffy. I can't tell you how glad I hear that the auto-aim is basically done away with in Halo 3...I smile everytime I read a post that says that :D

For the guys in the beta right now, d/l my two movies some time, tell me what ya think, I got a few sick stickies on the Valhalla match, and the High Ground match has some good laser action. I've been watching the hell out of everyones movies over the past hour or so, such an awesome feature :)

Anyone knock that fusion core into the mancannon yet? That is going to be one of the first things I do on that map.

I do it practically every match.. I've gotten close but I've never gotten a kill :(

LoL I just wanted to see it explode waaaay out there, but getting a kill would be a plus. Also watched your video and yeah those foam things are suspect but hopefully it all fit snug inside the box so it won't shift during shipping. The mini-clips of the beta were cool, some nice kills and fun music. :D

Augh. I did my first video blog evers and two things make it related to this thread. Arne and CheapyD and I doing a barrel roll-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gi-DlzVqLA

Said roll happens "after" the video. I used the saved film feature for the little clips in the middle.

What a tease, I thought you were gonna start flipping the 360 around after packing it to test whether or not the styrofoam works. Also, you must have some deluxe warranty thing, as my coffin was nothing but cardboard and I didn't even dream of getting my original silent wonder back. I've learned to look past the jet engine my refurb has for it's still functional inner beauty.

Speaking of unplayable, I've been doing Rumble Pit to try and learn to play better.

http://www.bungie.net/Stats/GameStatsHalo3.aspx?gameid=46523&player=GhaleonEB

It's working!

It takes time to get good. What I'd say is set the sensitivity to ten and play a few games then set it back to your normal setting and you should see your accuracy improve all round from before.

I had done that when I first started playing Halo and it was hell, but it really helped me out in the long run.

It would be nice if Microsoft made it able for you to watch those Halo 3 stats on the Xbox 360. I mean, for Halo 3, it's the least they could do.

Over 4000 posts and it's only been going for two days. I reckon this thread will be over 9000!

I'm guessing there will be 1000 or so between the time we all start our download and when we actually get to play it.

When I first saw that typical Halo 3 encounter jpg I thought WOW, how am I going to manage those kind of numbers? Seeing as you can die very easily in Halo. If you look at it a lot of the new weapons have massive firepower. Missile launcher, gatling gun, spartan laser...you don't waist that on something small. Gatling gun will be for hordes and hordes of grunt running at you.
Especially the spartan laser I think we'll be get to use on something Dhrinol-like, something big.

Is it me or is the ratio of plasma/spike grenades in favor of the spike grenades? I seem to be picking up those way more than the plasma grenade...which is kind of a shame cause I love the plasma grenade.

Also, I want Banshees on Valhalla!

One more thing, I hope to god Bungie doesn't release Halo 3 like MS did with Gears...I understand that situation but it was so cruel having to wait for 10 days before I got to play it here in Europe. I love Halo even more and story is way more important for me in this game...Imagine the pain of waiting for the beta but then for the full game and stretched over 10 days. Last time there was only 1 or 2 days apart. That's bearable.

I mean, I tried to kill one of my own teammates earlier tonight on High Grounds, not realizing he was on my team (I'd just played a game where I was the other color). All he was doing was trying to avoid me while I jumped around shooting at him and he says "what the **** are you doing I'm on your team! you got tourettes or something?" He didn't even shoot back and I couldn't drop him. That's just disheartenting.
:lol :lol accidental betrayels make you feel so stupid.

If there's a ten day gap I'm just importing. I can get it from VGP with courier shipping, cheaper than the UK RRP, in like two days, so there's certainly no reason for MS not to be able to.

Can't imagine them doing that with this, though. They want the launch of this game to be an international event.

O_o at this thread. Wow.

To those in the beta, how are the melee's and grenades? Someone mentioned they feel more visceral which I'm liking. When they patched Halo 2 to 1.1 I instantly started to get more traction as I was very much all about grenades and melee's in Halo 1.

If they've gone even closer to Halo 1 in that regard than the patched Halo 2, then wow :) Judging by what people were saying about being able to flip warthogs, it sounds like it :0)

It's ok Ghaleon, just play with a Halo virgin like me and we can both suck at it together :lol

Q2 was the last FPS that I was really good at and played competitively in, have never gotten into any console titles though. Anyway, think I'll give it a try, if anything just for the social/community aspect of it.

EDIT: From the videos, it seems that you cannot fight back while carrying the flag in CTF mode? Don't know if I can get use to that, I hate not being able to defend youself as the flag carrier. Does the flag return by itself after it's dropped, or will it just be stationary until someone from either team touches it?

After sooooooo long, I'm going to start cleaning out my full Friends List in about 45 minutes, and start adding some guys - also just added myself to the Beta list webpage just now too... so when you see the GT: DXLR8R, accept it...

It's going to be tough finding people to delete though... sigh...

Well, flags and Oddballs one hit-kill no matter where you hit now...

If the flag is dropped, the defense team can get around it to start a countdown to reset the flag if the attackers don't pick it up to restart the countdown...

I imagine Flag touch return is still an option when the final game ships though. There was a medal for getting a kill with the flag as well I think :)

I was supposed to get a screencap of the countdown reaching 1 Day, but missed it of course.

Regardless, 0 days, 23 hrs, 54 mins, and 31 secs until the Halo 3 Public Beta begins!

And yes, I realize that the countdown is wrong. The bastard. Although I think it's wrong in the wrong way. I'm pretty sure it's reading as mountain time for whatever reason.

My friendlist has doubled to 45 just in the span of the beta!

Problem is that we don't know for sure if Halo 3 will be region free.

Either I suck at throwing grenades, but I find them to be a support weapon instead of a kill weapon. Lob a grenade to take down some of the shields then finish with your weapon, or the other way around, save for the sticky or in closed environments.
I find myself mixing and using melee-shoot-grenade more.

yea regarding those MLG guys half the time there kids who suck. 99% of pros are good. Look out for all the poser clans such as: PMS,KSI,FBI. Granted they have done decently but nothing to warrent them "pro". If one of them says something just ask them who they are, because there all unknowns. Or just use that mute feature.

If they have MLG in there name there definitely a poser.

For the guys who want and get off on off-screen shots :p

Not in the beta. Probably haven't figured out the balance yet or they don't want to reveal yet what they've done with it.

I'm thrilled to hear that Halo 3 is playing well. I knew they would nail the gameplay. I can't wait to try it for myself...

Also, either Bungie went crazy with the grass (nuclear grass) or somebody needs to calibrate this TV. :P

Is this not up in the UK yet?

I have Crackdown in, but the Download Halo 3 Beta option is still grayed out.

Sorry if this has been asked.

Publib Beta goes up on Wednesay, aka tomorrow... those of us playing now are playing thanks to early invites from the boys at Bungie & the press and media got invited early as well...

Do you have Crackdown? If you have, I'd really like to read what you think about it.

Haven't played on Live, but have played system link, and well, it sucks. There was some major adjustment to the new control scheme for me, so going back to Halo 2, on the Xbox S pad, no less, really sucked (or should I say, I sucked). Once you get trained/used to it, reloads on bumpers makes so much more sense. There is a distinct diff. in the amount of auto-aim between the 2 games as well. But I like that there is less in Halo 3. As for looks, there is no comparison. Whether on Xbox or Xbox 360 upscaled, Halo 2 can't match Halo 3. Sure, the geometry might seem less than impressive in the H3 screen shots, but going straight from H2 to H3, you see a dramatic difference. Plus the sound design is leagues better, and that adds soooo much to the game.

I agree wholeheartedly. Flow is the perfect word. You know in some games things just feel right? That's where the beta is, game play-wise right now. I've obviously bitched about some things in the beta already, but the only thing that not related to players that really bothers me is the seeming randomness of grenade damage. Drove me nuts in H2, and it looks like the same will be true in H3. Others have mentioned it could be lag causing a difference in what I see vs what the grenades actually do, but I dunno. Other than that, though, it's going to be very, very difficult to go back to our semi-daily Halo 2 matches at lunch. Just doesn't have the same appeal any more. Thanks Bungie. You've ruined my lunch time fun.

And to make my life worse, I've had to start taking antibiotics in preparation for a potential root canal, and the damned stuff is making me very sensitive to motion sickness. I was watching one of my own damned H3 shared movies to see if I could delete it (wasn't that impressive), and I got extremely nauseous. If that doesn't improve once the ab's get into my system more, I'll be pissed. We'll see if some ginger pills actually work on that like Mythbusters said. :D

Stick with me. I'll show you the ropes. Shit, played some VIP on Snowbound and I think I betrayed four of my own teammates in the lower level before I even caught sight of the other team!
