This is one of the few highlights of being a stay at home dad. Of course, that damned center button on the 360 controller is becoming a real problem, as it attracts unwanted attention from the local gremlins.

gremlins your kids right? if so:lol

MTV's Three Things Every Beta Player Needs to Do
So what are three things any player of the Halo 3 beta must accomplish? O'Connor presented his directives:

» "Get a kill with the Spartan Laser. It is the most satisfying thing you'll ever do.

» "Make sure to grab the rocket launcher on high ground. For some reason no one ever gets it. And it's absolutely lethal on that stage. No one's figured that out.

» "Make sure you ride in a Mongoose [ATV] with someone, so you can bond in your weaponless bullet-sponge of a vehicle."

Is there anything you can really accomplish with that last one?

"Just chattin'," O'Connor cheerfully replied. That might be the only moment of "Halo 3" calm available in the next three weeks.

The rocket launcher part is so true, I hardly ever see anyone go for it...At the start of the game, when I spawn at the beach I always race towards it with the mongoose, but no one else seems to bother.

Yep. And I'd just like to add that the 360 fails the 2 year old test miserably. There is that big old blinky button on the controller, and then there is that BIG illuminated circle button on the console itself. So if anyone is playing with me and I suddenly drop out of the game and don't return for roughly the time it takes to restart the game, you know why.

Halo 3 is the end, boy.

You don't actually believe that, do you?

Is anybody having trouble reading the text or seeing their grenades & equpment etc. on the HUD on bright parts of maps (like the snow in Snowbound)?

The text is unreadable to me when looking at snow or at the sky. I've been playing on an HDCRT and an LCD monitor, and in both cases it's hard to read the combat reports in some parts of the maps.

Is the video editor thing in the beta? And well these videos be able to be saved on a pc or usm drive and uploaded online pretty easily?

Yup, it's been mentioned by a lot of people.

Hey guys, what time is the beta going live in UK time? Cheers.

1pm BST. Hoping everyone else in the UK stays at work and we have us some stress free servers whilst our US friends get pinged.

As I said a few pages back though, I've probably got two hopes of that, ones called Bob...

No video editor, very limited features in the beta for saving and viewing replays. You can only view it from your own first person perspective - except when you die you can cycle through other players. Apparently they'll have tons of features in the final.

You have to have a video capture card in your PC to capture it. It doesn't save as an actual video when you save a replay. Instead it saves it as a small file containing just the data required to replay it from Halo 3, otherwise the files would be hundreds of megs.

sorry if already answered...

are ALL crackdown games coming along with the Halo 3 Beta? 100%? or some arent coming with?

If it has a sticker with the beta on, it will have access to the beta. I have not heard of Crackdown reports without those stickers.

I still can't find the rockets or laser on any of the maps. Is there supposed to be a point to the spiker? It just seems like a weak machine pistol.

The sticker is an actual sticker, it's not printed on the box cover.

Duel wield them for great result in close combat.

I'm gonna start deleting people on my FL here in a few and adding some of you guys. I can't wait until tomorrow! I've already got a few on here on my list but I need to add some more. I need to get my name up around here so I can be feared when it comes to Halo. I've been lurking the shadows for sometime hearing about how good some of you are and now I'm almost ready for primetime..:D

For those getting ready for the Beta, here is a tip: Play Halo 2 while you wait. Why, you ask? Because I (along with my 0.7 kill/death ratio in the Beta) am discovering that you can't just pick up Halo and expect to compete against those that have been playing Halo 2 a lot in the last few months. Once the excitement of playing the Beta wore off, I found myself feeling like a total Halo newb and not particularly enjoying getting my ass-kicked by the vets. And since the core gameplay of Halo depends so much on the weapons, and those core weapons are still pretty much as they were in Halo 2, the Beta just feels more or less like an extension of Halo 2 with newer sound effects, some new weapons, better graphics, and great gameplay. I am in no way saying this is Halo 2.5, but just keep in mind that those who were good at Halo 2 are still good, and vice versa. This is NOT a new IP.

Where exactly is it on the map anyways?

Migraine. Food Poisoning. Flu. 24hr Stomach Bug. Pick one, or mix and match!

This is a very good point, and goes a long way towards explaining my inconsistent play. I haven't seriously played Halo 2 in months and it shows; it feels like my play used to be much more coherent and consistent. Not too worried about getting the best possible rank in the Beta, though, seeing as it will all be moot when the retail game launches. There's a lot of new stuff to check out in the Beta, and my number one priority right now is just having a good time-- even if it means playing like a newb sometimes and making a fool of myself on others. :/

Halo 2 was never this much fun though. There's a satisfying feeling of weight and power in H3's arsenal that was totally lacking in H2. There's nothing like emptying half an AR clip into someone and then finishing him off with a crushing melee blow-- just like in H1. The guns sound so much more potent now, too. Probably my biggest complaint in H2 was the feeling of weightlessness and lack of fine control; those are totally gone in H3. I have never felt like anything but in total control of my Spartan. I actually more of a Campaign guy than a MP junkie, but this Beta has me more excited for the singleplayer than ever-- now that I now the fundamental mechanics of the game are so solid.

Don't think I'll ever go back to H2 again.

Oh I've already been training. I stopped playing for months but in the middle of April I picked up Halo 2 MP again to prepare for tomorrow. The result? 5-7 hour game days just about everyday. Also I finished with finals and this semester of college so I've just been chillin' doing NOTHING.

So yeah I'd say I'm MORE than ready:)

You know where the bubble shield is? Well, a couple of feet to the right there's this rock with a wall where the rocket launcher is.

I read that and I about shit myself ready to fight the big fight in flame wars. Since its close to 2 years old, well more 1 1/2. Once I read the rest of your comment it became clear what you meant haha. I know about kids and consoles, they are fun to watch when supervised but otherwise they can be very risky.

IGN seems convinced the SMG is worthless now. They say the AR has the general overall usefulness, the BR has the range, and the spikers have the rate of fire. Thoughts?

btw: Urk betrayed me twice in that round. :lol

edit 2: I went back to Halo 2 and could not play it a well. Halo 3 has a better overall feel, better balance, and is just more fun.

i disagree about the smgs. like halo 2, they are still the perfect duel wieldable weapon, and if (thats a pretty big if in halo 3) i chose to duel wield, the smg and another weapon is nearly always my choice. it compliments all of them very well and unlike the spiker or plasma rifle, its projectiles are near instantaneous, so you miss less with it. it may not be as powerful, but its definitely more consistant when you throw one of those in the mix.

anyone else hate rumble pit? totally doesnt fit my playing style. i'm a pretty cautious halo player (unless i'm screwing around). i may not get the most kills on my team in team games, but i usually have the least deaths. rumble pit throws all that caution to the wind and your encouraged to go balls out to inflate your kill score only. blah

I really hate Slayer games, even Team Slayer. Like, I'd almost rather not play Halo 3 than play Slayer. I just don't see any point to pure deathmatch - there's never any satisfaction without a secondary goal. That said I'll be spending some time in there this week to hopefully get my skillz up. I've identified three areas I can practice to improve so hopefully I'm not the hilarious walking corpse I am now.

Are you serious? I just rented Crackdown yesterday so I could download the beta.

The Gamefly copy I got when it first came out had the beta download screen. I haven't put in this Family Video copy yet though.

Shhhhhhhh!! I like the fact that no one uses it. It's always there when I need it.

It's weird how different my sp playing style is from my mp playing style.

Halo SP I'm like Sam Fischer: I sneak (especially around sleeping grunts), hide, duck behind cover, recharge my shields, walk back miles for some bullets or to change a weapon. Not so much in MP.

Yes!

All of my most memorable MP experiences have been in CTF or some sort of objective gametype. They're the best of both worlds: it requires elements of strategy, good teamwork and all that jazz-- and it's not like you don't get to shoot and kill people as well. Don't know why more people don't play Skirmish...
