The Halo 3 Beta Thread

I'm not sure how someone can argue that PTT team chat is any better than a simpler solution like VOX team chat. The ONLY thing I can think of that PTT offers that you couldn't do with VOX is set up griefing with the other team without your own team hearing it.

Had a good few games in a row. So much fun. So many moments had me cracking up.

Anyway, now its just saying "downloading information from xbox live"
Everyone i speak to on my friends list is having the same issue... Anyone else?

So here it is. You, who read tonnes of VG info daily, don't know about it. What does this say about Joe Casual and his unwashed masses? They certainly don't know.

That's why you should tell people at the start of matches :)

I hate PTT for a few reasons.

In a heated situation, I often forget to push the button; furthermore, I'm not pulling my finger off the analog stick (that is, the only mechanism for saving my own hide) to contact my teammates.

Second, I dislike the PTT system in place. You tap it and hear the very obvious "line open," noise, but the "line close" noise often doesn't come when you're done talking and I'm never totally sure if the line is still open. Occasionally I will hit the button again and I won't hear "line open" and I'm not sure if everyone heard me or not.

Also, I dislike proximity chat coming through the speakers because my surround sound drowns that out. So, because of that, I have all voice directed through my headset. Because of that, I often lose track of who is in "proximity range." As a result, often I will say something thinking people are around me and then no one will hear me at all.

It's just wholly unnecessary IMO.

It's down. A few people over at the bungie forums got past the Game Over screen (which you'll probably get if you leave the beta and try to come back in), but no one's been able to get in an actual game yet, they're all stuck in matchmaking lists.

I'm not a fan of "push to talk" in team games. Most of the time it's fine, but there have been a few instances where it was a problem. One happened a few days ago, when I came around a corner while defending the base on High Ground to find myself staring down the twin firing cylinders of the rocket launcher. I was a dead man.

I wanted to shout, "rockets in the base!" to warn others. But I hit the d-pad, waited for the squelching sound and then yelled it. But by then the rocket was well on its way, and my warning got cutoff by my messy death. So to my teammates it sounded like,

"Ro - yearrrrghhhhh!!!! - phssssssshhhhhhhhh......"

I got to watch in frustration waiting to respawn as two guys came barreling around another corner to meet a similar fate. :(

Agreed on all points. Well said. This will likely be scoffed at but Bungie should adopt the squad system that Resistance uses. Join a squad within your party and you have open mic. Wanna talk to people outside your squad - hit the d-pad. Much better solution, imo.

I also feel that the carbine is way too overpowered. I feel that most of the long-range weapons are a little overpowered and the sniper rifle reloads way too quickly. Rate of fire is to high for a sniper rifle.

This is interesting, but before I know whether or not to take your opinion seriously, can you please tell us how many games of Halo 2 and 3 you have played? If it isn't above 10000, I'm going to have to disregard your thoughts. I know you understand.

God dammit, all the people who were going to come over yesterday and play but we had to cancel are going to be here in about a half hour. ****.

Now that I think about it, It really comes down to how you feel about voice chat in games to begin with. I don't like to hear ANYTHING from the other players other than pertinent gameplay info. I don't want to hear about sports, the last game you played, your hot sister, your music, or any other crap. I prefer the natural sounds of battle to somebody talking in my ear about non-game crap or trash-talking or whatever.

Therefore, the PTT is beneficial to me, as it weeds out a lot of that BS. I just feel like if it were on all the time, I'd end up muting most everybody I play with or just avoiding the headset altogether unless I was playing with friends.

Damn, the thing was ready and I could have searched for a game but I wanted to do team training instead of rumble and it went back to the loading screen.

Exactly what happens to me alot. I want to get out that info, but can't. In gears though I can say it no problem.

Only 40 Halo 3 games played. But, I imagine that once I hit 10,000 (in about 350 days) my opinion will become the valid one.

Never played Resistance, but that does sound interesting.

I see your point, but I'd prefer open team chat. that being said, let's hope for a host based option or something. that's the beauty of this being a beta I guess!

the halo community + open mic = hell
And THAT is why Bungie has implemented the a-hole button, and all the voice options in the game. I'd like to have the option of leaving my mic open, since I only talk to call out important activites. ("gate open!" "going for the flag" "rockets in the base!")

I have come to the conclusion that killing anything, especially a vehicle full of spartans, with a Spartan Laser is the most satisfying thing in the history of videogames.

Exactly... and a lot of muting. Of course Bungie did make that easier... but hot dawg! I gotta take my dang thumb of the stick. I'm stuck with the issue of... Do I listen to this 8 year old scream like a girl, or do I die in the process to save my ears by pressing the back button to mute him? Oh wait... I gotta use the right thumbstick to do that too... so I can't AIM! OMG!!! Of course I can do this when I'm dead, but what if I'm 1337 and don't die? 0.o

Edit: Thank God for closed mic... :D

I want to know why the hell I can't avoid the laser. Furthermore, please tell me why PEOPLE ARE ALREADY do good with it:lol

This whole "but the community..." argument is asinine. Bungie can't make it any easier to mute players, which you can even do upon your death if necessary. Additionally, the entire idea of designing a game's communication system around people that abuse it just seems like complete garbage...especially since you can't even hear the other team, should they trashtalk and such.

I only plan to play with people I know in real life and people I know from GAF. I'm not playing with strangers. They are mean to me and call me names. :(

For some reason hitting the mongoose with the laser is a little more enjoyable. it blows to a million pieces

Exactly. A jackass who wants to be a jackass is going to be a jackass whether he has to push a button or not. It's not like PTT helps you combat jackassery from others, cause it's not you pushing their PTT button.

Man, I was pleased with how it was going, then the last two games I played before it all broke I was stinking up the joint worse than when I first started. Hope that isn't a sign of things to come.

Where are the settings for the beta? I couldn't find them.
I found them for the first time last night. Hit the start button at the title screen. The options are there, and you can toggle pages to customize your spartan as well.

2) Halo 2's weapon balance was awful.

I mean obviously. People just abandoned it after a few weeks because the weapon balance was so off that it was unfun to play.

Seriously.

While it's great that you have an opinion about this, it's obvious that the majority of Halo 2 players seem to have no problem with...well just about anything in the game. If given the opportunity you would probably ruin the entire game with your "fixes".

Halo 2's weapons balance was perfection

Indeed.

I think it's the fact that it's an all or nothing weapon, and it has a 3 second charge time. Hitting somone with it and watching their corpse fly across the map is great!

I prefer my Laser kills to be aerial. There's just something awesome about it.

I'm starting to think the AR is overpowered. Every weapon has it's use, sure enough, but the AR seems a bit too versatile. I'd probably think it more balanced if it weren't such a beast up close.

XBL is so overstressed it's hilarious.

Oh and vehicles still feel incredibly weak to me. The Banshee or whatever does almost nothing but call attention to yourself.

A lot of jackasses are too lazy/stupid to toggle the button to talk.

Wtf is the secret to halo? I had this same problem in Halo 2. I can stand there right with my crosshairs on someone and empty clip after clip into them, even using bursts doesn't help. They rarely ever die. Most of the time they'll just turn around, stare at me like I got off the handicap buss and bitch slap me to death =[
That's not how you kill people in Halo! With the AR, for example, a clip won't usually kill someone. You're supposed to use a grenade to soften him up before you shoot him or to finish him off with a melee!
