The Halo 3 Beta Thread

Another gripe is the fact that the majority of Americans I play against seem to be racist against me and my race; British.

I love it when they complain we should stick to our "servers" as we are lagging up theirs, and then one of them drops and he happened to be the host and everything runs fine when the new host is selected.

Certainly gets annoying after a while and makes me regret putting UK in my Gamertag, but I haven't had any country location abuse so far in Halo 3. Funnily enough, the worst abuse I ever got from Halo 2 was from the Dutch, they just wouldn't shut up :lol

I actually really enjoy playing with British people, they're generally much nicer and friendlier to play with. Offhand I can't recall a British person ever telling me to go **** myself.

What is your gamertag? You sound like my kind of American.

I should mention I don't throw grenades very much. I never played Halo 2 multiplayer, so it's taking a while to get used to throwing grenades accurately and often.

Yeah, it really is an art form. You'll see excellent players place frags right at the feet of their opponent and then take them out with one BR shot to the dome.

The trick is aim and timing. Throw to soon, to short, or just off the mark and you'll tip off your attack and they'll be able to get around a corner and let their shields come back up and you've wasted a powerful weapon. Throw too late and, as you mentioned, you're probably just wasting valuable trigger pulls up close or just hoping to take them down with you.

I got an Extermination on Valhalla Territories with a plasma and then a frag. Very luck on the enemy placement, but it still felt nice.

Dunno, I have 5Meg downstream and a 400kbs upstream.

Oh, I'm not saying your connection is crap. It's something about playing across the Atlantic that makes games extra laggy.

I am in love with the SMG. It is a dangerous affair, I'll admit, but I can't help but pick it up, to feel the cold metal through my gloved fingers, to spray out a torrent of bullets, to melee and grenade like a punch drunk fool. O, SMG, how I love thee even as we fall to the ground under a hail of Carbine fire. I'll be back soon to claim you again.

:lol Awesome :lol

There's nothing wrong with using grenades. There's just way too many. Grenades are supposed to complement your weapon, not the other way around. I've had many times where I've been jumped, I throw a grenade down and then just start shooting them. But I've been killed so many times by guys who literally see me, throw a grenade and then turn around and run away tossing grenades. Most of the time, if they get lucky enough to kill me, i get a teabag for my troubles.

Grenades destroy my K/D ratio.. For every kill I get with a gun I get blown away right afterwards.. WTF?

It's like throwing a grenade before the fight is a must for any confrontation.. Seriously, there are WAY too many grenades.

As a rule, I don't approach an enemy without a nade. I feel totally ineffectual without them. Nades make kills sooo much easier and quicker.

I dunno. Seemed to be the same in Halo 2. Plenty of nades to go around, most players with a full compliment of eight.

It wasn't nearly this bad in Halo 2 with the exception of Turf where there was nowhere to go.

Sniping is still really annoying to defend against. I'm more a middle to close range kind of player, and I get sniped ALL the time.

I agree with this too.

Look. I know it takes skill to put that tiny reticule on an enemy and keep it on a moving target.

But what am I supposed to do? I spawn next to the base on Valhalla and run towards it to get some guns and cover and get shot half way there. What did I do wrong there? Why did I deserve to get killed? Should I have run towards the middle where their team is? Should I have engaged a sniper (who I didn't even know was there) with my assault rifle at that distance?

And while most of my complaints are just dislikes and annoyances, this game seriously needs improved spawn logic. I get killed at least 5 times per match on High Ground by people spawning in my blind spots, usually two at a time and often right after I have spawned. WTF? Or fighting one guy in the middle in Valhalla and suddenly their entire team is there.

Am I the only person who loves Snowbound? It is, by far, my favorite map. I think it is easily the best balanced. The only thing off about it is the shotgun/energy doors thing but thanks to the terrain you don't have to go down there if someone is trying that shit.

Eight? You mean six, right?

I was saying that in Halo 2, players were often loaded up with eight. I just worded it poorly.

Nades are a huge part of the Halo core gameplay.

It's kind of ironic that you praise Snowbound as the best and most balanced map after you complain about the horrendous spawns on the game. Snowbound has THE WORST spawns in Halo 3. Every game, the enemy will spawn near me or behind me and I just get swarmed.

It's kinda strange. Both Snowbound and High Ground seem to spawn players in the exterior areas, where they are particularly vulnerable to both long range fire and assault from the rear (lol) when there are plenty of interior spaces that provide excellent cover.

Me too. I always get stuck and/or killed from the grave. It sucks. :(

ya know if you get killed from the grave by a grenade its probably because you were dumb and didnt move. you deserve death:lol :lol :lol

Nades are very plentiful. All you have to do is look at the ground in the middle of valhalla after a battle. You could sit there and nade spam forever. :P

But then again, everything is more plentiful in H3. You're never that far away from a BR or a Carbine or a spiker. This kinda even us the battlefield a little more. And nades are part of the reason why being caught from behind doesn't equal automatic death anymore. It helps with that annoying spawn system.

PS: please bungie tone down the auto-aim -_-

The aim assist has been toned down substantially. It's fine where it's at now.

Still getting a problem every once in a while of Halo 3 freezing my 360. And the people in my party usually say that it sends them all the black screen because I'm usually the host. So I wonder if it's a hosting issue.

If that's the case then that is why some games show everyone else except the host as not finishing... Makes sense now why it's not picking another host, the host is technically still connected. I'm sure they are collecting data from these event so that when the game releases this fall we dont have these issues.

Pretty much my experience. Although I have had the occasional run-in with fairly racist Brits as well (this was during Gears of War). Give the choice, I'd rather play with Brits, for the most part lol

Also, Big Team Battle was quite laggy last night. Some of the worst lag I've encountered so far - people were warping, black screens at respawn.

I'm also starting to understand the field of view criticism. Now I know why I get so disoriented after a fast turn or when I jump down to fight someone. It doesn't help if you have a big gun on your shoulder either.

Finally played a couple Shotty Sniper matches on Snowbound.

Some one was saying how intense it was and WOW they weren't lying. I think its probably the best game for intense cat and mouse type strategies on opposite sides on the barriers. Good stuff......

I really don't understand this at all. I used to win the vast majority of my melee battles, but ever since the update to tie BTB into the beta I can't win damn near any of them anymore. I don't think it was the update, just giving a time frame. My K/D ratio has taken a massive effect from this fact and I have no clue what is going on. I will shoot a person with about 1/2 clip of the AR then melee them, and nothing! All of this being up close and personal and I know I'm shooting and hitting them with both bullets and forearm. So if anyone has any advice/tips, it would be much appreciated as this is really aggrivating me to no end since I'm doing the same thing as I used to do earlier in the beta, with fantastic results.

I have no idea what the case is. All I know is that my 360 freezes up, and Halo 3 and Halo 2 are the only games to ever cause my 360 to freeze. And I do lose RP every time my 360 freezes.

Just because I like it doesn't mean it's exempt from bad spawns. Obviously that isn't the case.

I think I've hit my level plateau. I was generally out-skilled last night, and did so poorly one game that I went down TWO levels.

I need to start sniping more

If it's exclusively BTB, then I would think lag could be a factor. Your AR might not be registering or the host may be reading slightly different information to compensate for latency. If it's other gametypes, then perhaps Bungie made a few tweaks behind the scenes, though it would be uncharacteristic for them to change up the gameplay without filling the gaming populace in.

Finally made it to level 40 in Rumble Pit and also gained my Lieutenant rank. On bungie.net it says I've played 176 games. I've played nearly the same amount of ranked and social games(about 86-88 apiece).

I really liked BTB though I just really don't like playing Team Slayer or BTB with random people on XBL. It just doesn't work.

Totally agree.......half the time I die without even seeing where I'm getting shot from.

Spawn......AR bullets to the ass.....three seconds later dead again.

Rinse and repeat.

No, I was just using that as a time period marker type of thing. It's in every playlist that it happens in, especially Slayer, since that's the majority of what I play. I had a system that worked before and now doesn't, and no explaination as to why the change. But now, I'll shoot the person just like I did before, melee, and I see their shields drop, then they melee me once and I'm toast---and there I wait, thinking to myself, how? How can they accomplish killing me after I shoot them and then melee them in the head? My thoughts turn into disgust at the fact what I used to work and now doesn't. They don't jump while meleeing (sp?). They do exactly what I just did, except it works. Grrrr, so frustrating :/

Same exact thing is happening to me. And when I finally do land a melee killing blow it takes about a second to register. My hit detection is messed up.

Yes, I remember seeing that post before and thinking the same thing, so I share your thoughts on that. I just finally got to the point where I was so fed up and really wanted to make sure that this was a constant issue, I waited to post about it. I used to average double digit kills every game (with 2 to 4 "beat down" medals), with a sprinkle of "blah" games here and there as far as kills. Now my K/D is below 1 and plummeting b/c of this occurance since I always run into the fray, and when I do actually get a "beat down" medal, it's like I've win the lottery and I get the urge to save the film since it's such a rare occassion now.

The weirdest thing keeps happening to me. Someone will get the drop on me and just start unloading with the AR and then melee the shit out of my face, but I just turn around and hit B and they go down like a whore in the back of an Iroc Z. Happens again and again. Is my beta borked?

I feel like the biggest whore out there since I'm one of the people who gets the drop on someone but can't finish off the kill in that same exact situation. :lol

edit: curse you melee!! :::shakes fist:::

Bungie needs to fix the Bubble Shield and Power Drainer bug. They're fun to use, but damn it, it's very annoying when you can't see the area both items cover. I can see and hear the actual item, but the special effects that accompany them just vanish when they're deployed. This bug occurs like once every five matches or so. Has this happened to anyone else yet?

EDIT: don't have any problems with melee personally, even after Big Team Training was included. Still consistently slapping people to their death.

No. High Ground has the worst spawns. I can't count the number of times I've been spawned right in the open, and been immediately killed by people with Carbines.

Yeah it's happened four or five times to me, after 120 or so games. I've died as a result each time. :(

Problem i have is that i'm having a hard time aiming with either the sniper or BR. I thought maybe it was my vga cable and my lcd's ms rate, but i can play the same as I do in halo 2 on my sdtv. Could it be i'm not used to the 360 controller yet? I only got it last saturday. sensitivity is at 3.

My favorite is spawning while grenades are going off around me. I have yet to do so and take instant damage from one, but there's nothing quite like spawning and having a frag blow up ten feet in front of me in the first second to get me moving.

Halo 2, huge aim assist.
Halo 3, not so much.

You've just got to get good at actually shooting people. =P

largest thread on this iteration of GAF, though 2nd most in views to the Wii Console thread.

Back on topic, they really need to add some more game modes or something to BTB, its always just team slayer on vahalla or higher ground with the VERY occasional CTF or terrortories. More CTF please

Also why is BTB training???

GashPrex said:

BTB Training needs to focus more on objective games instead of Slayer. It's fun to throw in a slayer here and there, but it gets old after awhile.

They also need to add a BTB Ranked... :D

Ah my faith has been restored.

Had a couple of bad matches earlier in the week, the games were poor, lots of lag, and every game was full of screaming racist idiots.

Gave it a go again tonight. First match was exactly the same. One last chance...
And it was awesome. Had a fair few good games just now. Im happy again :)
