The Halo 3 Beta Thread

Just got an orange screen of death, and the guide popped out to ask me what I was doing before it happened after a high-octane game of BTB Training on Team Slayer on Valhalla. Anyone else have this before? Have you heard of this Stinkles?

And yeah, it ruins VIP. I mean, you can stick the VIP with a spike grenade, get a direct sniper headshot, or a direct laser hit and the guy will still be alive. ONE plasma pistol charged shot, though, is all it takes to bring him to no shields status?

I don't see how this is a bad thing. Like you just said the VIP can survive almost every other attack (which I don't think is very fair at all).

The gametype would be absolutely no fun to play if the VIP was so invincible. He's already got an overshield, usually at least one defender with him, and the VIP usually hides out somewhere (behind a shield door with shotgun or in the base with a missile pod).

I don't see how the plasma pistol is cheap or ruins the mode. It's the only decent way to take out the VIP most of the time, unless your whole team manages to attack him at once.

I haven't played VIP a lot, but aren't PP also pretty scarce? I don't see everyone running around with them on those modes.

The Power Drainer is still my preferred method of taking down a VIP. That, and teamwork. :p

VIP is still my favorite new game mode. I just think if the PP can take him out so easily, then so should the laser, or a spike grenade stick.

I don't like VIP, but I think that's mostly because I usually get it when I'm playing with random people and there's no coordination whatsoever.

Yeah. I usually go VIP hunting with Plasma Pistol and Assult Rifle by myself if that's the case. If the team's got the shit together, then I usually defend the VIP (I use him as bait by the cliff side and then go to town with my AR and Snipy. I got my only Rampage this way).

I think Escort will be more fun than VIP, though I like the new additions.

Definitely.

And all other gametypes with "Designated Areas" that must be protected will be super intense.

KOTH games are so intense when the other team only has 5 seconds left to win, now add that intensity the entire game.

I love those gametypes. The new Territories is a wonderful example. It starts out pretty tame as each team snags an easy territory or two - but the battle for that last one is always epic. In similar fashion I can see Escort ramping up in intensity as that last waypoint gets defended tooth and nail. Desperation tactics, last stands, close calls. They pile up by the dozen.

I just got this link and I dunno if this was posted before but it's the Xbox.com boxart in a higher res. From Amazon.com

The other art was from amazon.com - this means the switched from the other to this one. I'd say it's final now, since it appeared on xbox.com first and is now going out to retailers. Which means I'm about to bump a thread. :D

Stinkles' avy makes his posts even more sneaky and mysterious. People's avatars always have an effect on how I read their posts. That's not crazy, or is it?
When you read my posts, do you think of someone throwing a tantrum?
Or have I failed?

Yeah there's that too :D

Yeah, same here. I like the idea of the actual VIP game type, but it's just not fun in matchmaking most of the time because you need really good coordination and that never happens.

And the out-of-map glitch on Valhalla too ruins things.

The other is that it's NOT a copy/paste job as I'd said earlier. It is a modified version of this art:

H3_EmotionLandscape.jpg

Note the relative positions of the Chief and the sunset. Since the source art was actually changed for the cover, that also leads me to believe it might be legit.
Actually, it is the exact same positioning as in the Emotion Portrait (not Emotion Landscape you linked) wallpaper on Bungie.net I tried to compare the two in Photoshop and they're absolutely unique as far as positioning goes.

:)

(man did I just out-Halo-nerd Ghaleon? That's a pretty scary thought for someone who thought little of the franchise a few weeks ago. :()

edit; sloppy side by side for great justice:

Yes you did! I forgot all about that version. :lol
I spent a good amount of time trying to figure out subtle changes because I was convinced you were right when I was writing an article about it (I mean, you're Ghaleon and this is Halo, of course you're right). Didn't mean to bust your balls or anything.

I just woke up from my nap. I had a weird dream. I was playing Halo 3, but I couldnt pass the first level because it had key/door puzzles like Doom (I get motion sickness while looking for those). I just hope that with all these new innovations, Bungie doesnt decide to add puzzles to the game. That is what makes me puke at Half Life 2.

You didn't hear about the crate puzzles? You have to put them on the pressure spots to open the door to save cortana

Generally speaking, that's not true. I think the whole "September, believe" bit brought up my credibility factor regarding Halo. I do pay close attention to all things Halo, but I'm not perfect.

Ghaleon is like Robin, and I'm like Batman. I'm Master Chief, and he's Cortana. He'll start freaking out and talking about the world ending soon.

No, that would be Mr. Vociferous.

Like all brain dead game design like that, I just google it and follow the instructions. I have no patience for that sort of crap.

Wait it wasn't a figure but a figure H. I just googled it *shivers*

How to solve the H-puzzle on the unknownworld

1. The tile closest to the entrance to the room is the "reset tile." Step onto the reset tile to begin the puzzle since you'll be walking straight up the right side. You will not use the reset tile again unless you slip up.

2. Walk all the way up the right-side of the "H" in a straight line and do not stop. Walk straight off the puzzle toward the back of the room and let go of the controls once you are no longer touching the puzzle.

3. Walk around the puzzle to its right side, careful not to touch any part of it now, and stop when you are facing the middle tile of this side. Now walk straight across along this middle row toward the left side and do not stop. Walk completely off the puzzle and let go when you are safely off.

4. Now walk around the puzzle to place yourself below the left-side bottom tile, and stop when you are facing upward toward the top of the left side. Walk straight up the left side. When you touch the left-side top tile, the door will open. If by chance it should not, then most likely you touched a tile twice by accident. Head back to the reset tile and follow carefully.

Horrible horrible.

I think I played against him tonight. Is that someone on GAF? Haven't noticed him. Anyway I think I might get my Captain before the beta is over. Not that it really means much but hey...It's an accomplishment I guess. I can't believe how much some people have played the beta. Like 800 games in 3 weeks.

:lol I think I read that exact walkthrough.

I did the same for that sequence in Gears where you have to cross the wooden floor without falling through. I died once, tried again, and then googled it.

That one wasn't hard at all. Just move slowly and back up quickly when you hear a cracking noise.

Yeah, but why even bother? I could see sending you down there and get put into a tough fight, but just to die is stupid and lazy.

Actually, it is the former. Not the latter. If you can keep the lambent wretches from killing you, there is a ladder you can climb out on. :)

Ultimately, whether or not this fancy photoshoppery of excellent artwork is what we'll be saddled with in september, Halo 3 really needs no cover art. They could slap the H3 logo over a picture of dairy cows in a pasture and it would sell just as many copies and we would all crap our pants just as fervently. From my point of view, the marketing guys who get assigned to this project have one of the easiest jobs in the world ahead of them.

Wow. I stand corrected. I died almost instantly when I hit the ground so I assumed it was a no hope situation. I retract my statements. (but I'd still've googled it :lol)

V.I.P. would be absolutely perfect without the PP. You still have the power drainer, plasma rifles, and needler which all pretty much destroy a VIP, but require at least a little bit of skill to use, charging a PP and then punching someone is about the lamest shit ever.

And the VIP isn't unstoppable, two carbines/BRs will bring someone down quick, as well as someone using an AR while the other uses plasma rifles...it's really a brilliant mode when you don't run into PP camping whores. Had a game last night where the VIP tried to just camp inside a base with a PP and use the punching method, we were down 5-0, but eventually came back and won, love owning people that use only one tactic.

I was playing a split screen game a few nights ago, and my friend flew over to the other side of the map though an explosion. I saved the video, and tried rewatching it, but for some reason it 'loses' track of him about half way through the match, resorting to just showing what player 1 was doing instead :(

Especially so since you can always see where the VIP is, so sneaking up is pretty easy if the VIP is held up someplace.

Sorry for not accepting the invites, I played a couple games, but I'm pretty wore out from work, wasn't really in the mood to play tonight. :|

I saw that Luke was on (playing with 3 Buninja's no less :P), but maybe you're talking about Trasher, I was talking to Ghaleon/Voc though.
