The Halo 3 Beta Thread

As a casual Halo player, I've come to the realization that there is no such thing as a casual Halo player. Matchmaking means you're tossed in with people who have bars and stars to spare, meaning instadeath for the most part.

I don't like training playlists. Training games, since they don't rely on any level for matchmaking, mean that some of the people you'll be playing with are head and shoulders above everyone else, and everybody else is just cannon fodder. I stick to ranked matches so that I don't have to play people who are so much better than I am.

Unfortunately, due to the short availability and the changing playlists, the ranked matches for H3 Beta aren't much better, because the matchmaking system needs time to work properly and get people to the levels they need to be at, so de-leveling aside, you often end up playing with people who are of much higher skill as they work their way up the ladder.

Displacement and material. When the Spartan armor becomes waterlogged after intrusive percussive or energy weapon fire, the gel layers and other materials inside the armor become compromised and the armor, rather than the dead Spartan inside, sinks.

Makes sense to me.

Speaking of armor getting waterlogged, what kind of technologies are in place to prevent Spartan soldiers from experiencing sever cases of moist or swamp ass situations? One would think that in an era of meat analogues some kinds of crack drying device would be employed. Further, couldn't such a device, contraption, or material then be used to prevent waterlogging of any sort and severity.

Thank you for your time and attention.

Also, poop.

That's the thing. What you get in a big open map like Valhalla, unless you are a good sniper, is a bunch of deaths from nowhere. It's better in High Ground as you can back up to shotgun, very clever, but in Valhalla it's useless.

Nevertheless, my argument is that sniping is a very specific skill that not most people have, and going into Valhalla in Snipers is for those people just misery. Everything else is very balanced.
I love shotty snipers... on High Ground. Hell, even on Snowbound it works fine, Valhalla is just too big, and like you said, you'll just keep getting shot from nowhere, and I happen to consider myself a pretty decent sniper (my skills fluctuate a lot while sniping though).

I've also found that playing it in Rumble Pit is much worse, especially on Valhalla, I can never seem to find anyone, so I just walk around for a bit before taking a bullet through the head.

Edit: And don't listen to all these haters Stinkles, floating Spartans ftw.

I picture-googled swamp ass...

The CDC has some horrifying pictures of severe outbreaks in the Sudan. I hear Bono is penning a song to drum up some support. He also wears silly hats.

What happens when you butthole fishhook someone who has swamp ass...?...I just blew my own mind. I don't really want to know.

I had no doubt there was a Halo Bible explanation for the floatation. Just seems weird to me. Like ghaleon said, a very small nit to pick.

The FAQ outlines the schedule for uploads. I just registered so I'll let you know what my experience is.

Edit: And I see you just registered too. :)

Nice explanation. You know what would be cooler though? If the Spartan didnt really die and the armor released biofoam to cover the spartan wounds until another spartan/medic could rescue him. This could lead to a gametype like "Execution" in GeOW.

Yeah, I'm pissed I missed the humpday games last night. Things would've been much different, had I been there to kick some Bungie ass!!!! :lol

Sorry to harp on the graphics once again but I really hope Bungie implements some more anti-aliasing in the final version because the beta is filled with jaggies.

It must be your TV. My 18-year old resolution-impaired TV softens all those rough edges. Even blends colors together for me nicely. Apparantly those features are not included on modern TVs.

Well, you're obviously not that sorry!

I'll join the HD club in August. (mid year bonus FTW)

My father bought the TV I use now when we got our Genesis. I'm carrying on a bit of a tradition. Except this TV purchase is sparked by a single game. :lol

(and in case anyone mistook my previous post - I'm saying everything is nice and blurry and washed out. but it does hide some artifacts!)

Game could look like a ****ing pile of shit for all I care, gameplay is all that matters in the end, and it's gameplay that still has me playing this 3 level tease.

I knew you were still in SD, but you've been gaming on the same tv since the early 90's? :O

Had we known it was that bad we would've started a "buy Ghaleon a TV" fund.

Now all that "can't read the Dead Rising text" stuff makes sense. :lol

I think GAF should give him one for creating the LARGEST THREAD IN HISTORY EVAR.

At least 720 p's. :)

My HDTV tube shows very little alaising. I'm quite happy with the graphics.

The bigger and better your HDTV is, the worse the graphics look. My setup is retarded. I have a 32"Samsung HDTV and I play 2.5' away from it so I get to see all the jagged edges. However, what bothers me are not the jaggies but the colors. I need that TV calibration tool that will come with the Legendary Edition ASAP.

How can a Spartan survive in space when their armor is not water tight?

They sink because their armor is perforated by weapon fire or explosives. It takes a few moments for water to flood in through the damaged armor, which then causes it to sink.

Do you honestly think that Bungie wouldn't implement AA in the final version?

Really?

Proelite said:

when projectiles pass through a surface, they create a breach in that surface through which other matter may pass freely in both directions (air or water, for example). When a Spartan is dead, it is usually because some thing has managed to pass through his armor, simultaneously killing him and creating the telltale holes left by passing things. Once the Spartan is dead, he can no longer survive in space. And, after he is dead, if there is water present in space, he will most likely drown.

Think about one of the new Pioneer Plasmas - best picture/size/cash delta on the market. They come out next month. And are amazing.

Could you (or someone) throw me a link? I'm an HD idiot (just beginning my education - I'll be doing my real research starting next month) and searching for "new Pioneer Plasma TV" is getting a lot of hits. :)

I know you're an HD enthusiast so I take your suggestions seriously.

You're looking for 8th gen pioneer plasmas, and I agree, they are your best bet.

Here's some propaganda:

clicky

EDIT: If you're going to go with a >40 inch, 1080p isn't all that important.

Yep, and if you can't afford the 1080p one, don't worry - the 720p sets are still astonishing. And all of the old school plasma problems (screen burn and so on) are history.

And if you CAN afford the 1080p set, Halo 3 looks pretty sweet in Campaign and MP in 1080p.

Thanks guys, I'll keep an eye on those. I think the 720p 42" set is the one I'll end up with (much larger is not practical for my gaming room or budget).

Edit: Gah! The smallest set costs $2,700. Midyear bonus is going to be $700-900. I've had my eye on this 32" LCD for $600 at Costco.... :(

That's the thing with new technology. I'm going to wait until boxing day or this time next year, but I have an 720p HDTV CRT. I don't know how you have kept an SD set all this time. I'm sure you have seen the 360 in HD so I don't have to tell you about what you're missing.

I would imagine if you hold out for a while you can find a sale for about $1999.

Anyone else think the Needler is a completely unnecessary, unbalanced, unworkable weapon that needs to be expunged from the Halo 3 universe as soon as possible?

Ghaleon, the 7th generation Pioneer is on sale at Amazon for $1,350 shipped, and probably no sales tax. It's the older model, but a very very good set. I doubt you will see a better LCD released this year that will compete with this model. Keep it in mind as you shop for a TV, because it will be on sale as they try to clear out inventory for the 8th generation sets.

No, it's a perfect way to turn the tide if a team has certain power weapons. The PP is what needs erased.
