The Halo 3 Beta Thread

I'm glad because there isn't a thing much more awesome than sticking a spike grenade in the wall of the bunker while being chased only to hear the sweet sounds of spikes impaling your pursuer.

That's because we wanted you to play with Spike Grenades.
I'm not objecting, just pointing out why it seemed like plasmas seemed like they were in short supply - on one map they weren't there.

I'll play with your spike grenades any day, good sir.

Plasmas were plentiful on Snowbound and Valhalla, but did not appear at all on High Ground.
It seemed to me they were in shorter supply on Snowbound and Valhalla too. Maybe it's just me. I love plasma nades.

I never minded, since there were always the spike versions around. The function was similar, and getting a stick is just as satisfying. I really need to hear that wet thwock sound again. :(

I LOVED the high-pitched squeal the plasma emitted right before it was going to explode. In retrospect, the sound effects in the Beta were amazing.

I kinda hope Plama's aren't on HG in the final game. The spike grenades really showed their potential on that map, or any map for that matter that had alot of enclosed spaces/corridors.

I can vividly remember to very nice kills I got with the spikes not by sticking and not even shooting a single bullet. I saw two people running through the chaingun bridge, got a spike stuck to the top of the ceiling and it went off as both of them walked under it killing both. I also got a guy going through the rocket tunnel up to the base by sticking it to the wall of 3 (territory area description) and as he was coming up the walkway and out of the tunnel it went off from the side and got him, good times.

I've been playing Halo 2 since the Beta ended and usually after about 5 or so matches I just have to turn the game off in disgust, so much bullshit in that game.

They really did do an amazing job with the sounds.

Every sound the Sniper made was my Fav. Pulling the trigger, hearing that huge BANG and the little ching of the next shell popping into the chamber. And of course the reload...

The Spiker's had the best sound. Sounded like thick, heavy nails were being shot. As soon as you heard them you knew you were about to die :[

I still smile when I think about the time I stuck a plasma grenade to a Mongoose tire, saw the mongoose start driving away with one of the wheels glowing blue, then hear that wonderful squeal before getting a double kill.

The 'stick' sounds are one of my new favorite touches in the game. It applies to being stuck as well - in Halo and Halo 2 unless the plasma grenade is on your front you don't know white death is about to occur. Nothing like hearing the squish of a the spiker or that wonderful latch from the plasma and knowing you're a dead man. Many times I'd stick someone and they'd just stop moving, as if they suddenly became resigned to their fate. Even better was the time that was coupled with, "oh shit".

*boom*

One of the new sounds that I did not like in the Beta was the Squishy sound when you got hit from the sniper.

I could deal with hearing it when I get stuck from a Spike grenade. But I don't like it from a sniper.

I really want to know what they used to create the sound for the Spike Nade. That was my favorite (even if I was on the receiving end). K-thunk.

I second the pro-spike grenade movement, although I got a little sloppy with them toward the end of the beta.

My sloppyness at the end came from me not attemping to shoot at all but try 100% to give some unexpected enemy a Party Hat with the spike grenade.

Beta... Wont you come back?

Love the music :p

Well i beat halo on legendary and have moved onto H2 now on heroic. It doesn't seem as good so far though, and i'm not liking some of these new enemies much at all, like the flying bugs or the new flying elites, they aren't menacing at all like the regular elites are, even when they aren't in the air. They don't even seem to look or act that much like elites to me when i'm running around, which is a shame since i love fighting those.

I actually kinda miss the health packs too, i grew to like those in halo, and i keep dying because i don't realise when i'm flashing red, i keep expecting to be able to hear the beeping like in #1 :p

Playing as arbiter is pretty cool, especially using the sword and camo ^^ Though i keep accidentally shooting the guys on my side :lol

Playing these just makes me want the beta back even more.

A bit of a bump, but I thought this belonged in here as a coda.

Edge wrote their review of the Beta (framed as a preview of Halo 3) online, and Next-Gen is hosting it. It's a great read and one of the ones that most lines up with my thoughts. It's all excellent so I'll quote the whole thing below.

How nice, they also used captures from my videos, just like in the paper Edge.

Take a look at this one. Its a plasma one but really funny: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9IbdivxiuI
The guy had bad luck with the shield door.
I've seen both sides of that first hand. I've done that to myself quite a bit... Maybe 5-6 times throughout the Beta. :/

The first time I saw someone do it was hilarious though. I had him trapped in the base while I was outside the shield door with the Ghost. Instead of just going through one of the many other exits, he decides to try and kill me with a plasma. Of course it bounced off and stuck to his arm, so I just boosted off and got the kill since he self-detonated.

:lol

Come to think of it.. I still haven't deleted the Beta from my HDD.

I'd say not since he started the post with "How nice". ;)

I keep thinking of how stuff like shield doors and man cannons will be used in campaign. So many possibilities.

Man, I miss this thread. I can't wait to see how the bubble shield plays out in single player, I'm hoping for some times when death just rains down upon you and your main/only chance of survival is a bubble shield.

Coincidentally, I was playing H2 yesterday and got up to the part where the Heretic Leader runs like a pansy and seals himself behind a "shield door". WTF HAX!

It never even occurred to me that they'll have to differentiate the normal impenetrable doors from the Beta ver shield doors. I wonder if they'll have a mix of them now, or if they just did away with the previous version? Hmmm.

YES. I wouldn't mind a point in the story where the area you're in gets hit by a blast from one of those super mortars. Buildings leveled, destruction all around and you're left standing in a huge crater. Then after the smoke clears and the holy light shines down upon you... you walk through the aftermath.

edit:
Actually, that's damn near the Starry Night teaser isn't it? :lol

Yeah. I've watched that ad so many times it's not even funny. Bungie is required to give us a bubble shield in Wraith battle; it would be too cruel not to. I must capture that moment in-game.

Fixed to pre-edit status. Ghaleowned! :p

How so? I just changed my mind on what I wanted to say. I edit my post several times, most of the time. I'm an indecisive guy. :lol

Now that I think of it, I wish I'd created that moment in a custom game. I avoided customs until the last day of the Beta. Now I miss it so.

:(

Oh I wasn't implying actual ownage. Just pointing out that I saw what you wrote before the edit.

As for editing as a whole, I tend to edit the hell out of my posts as well. So I know the feeling.

..and yes, you should've gotten into customs. I remember a custom game with Vyse, Snake and myself where Snake had the great idea to give a juggernaut the bonus of superspeed. It was fine 'till I got it, 'cause I went on the most hilarious ownage spree in Beta history. Literally running circles around everyone, dodging grenades and gunfire like I was in the Matrix and shooting people in the back of the head with my shotgun. :lol!

(and yeah, I edited.. take that!)

The most epic custom matches in the Beta were the ones where we sped up all the players to 300% movement speed, set the gravity down to 50% and gave everybody the Spartan Laser plus unlimited ammo as the starting weapon (the map was Valhalla).

Holy cow...

I had some saved films of the chaos and awesomeness that ensued :D

Can't wait to set up some Spartan Laser only matches in the final version.

Our final match was that/ Rockets/ Magnum one hit kills. Pink vs. Brown FTW!

We had something like that too, just without the one hit kills. 300% sped up movement, lower gravity plus Magnum only. I spent more than half of the match in the air throwing grenades at random spots in the map where I thought people would pass through.

We had a funny Shotgun only match that way too, it was like jousting. People were lining up left and right, charged at each other and the one with the best timing won, crazy stuff. I love Halo for being able to modify the multiplayer experience in so many different ways, not even most MP only shooters end up having so many options to choose from, but Halo 3 still has the awesome SP mode with co-op.

We did too! I was surprised that if you ran at someone fast enough that it was possible to Splatter them!:lol :lol

I hope there are none of these flying enemy types (flying bugs, jetpack elites) in Halo 3, i'm not finding fighting them fun at all in 2 so far.

Y'know, most people would wish for them to be improved rather than having them taken out entirely.

With the Elites, I always thought they moved around in the air much too slowly. The Drohnes, I didn't have much of a problem with... They just didn't seem to show up all that much/weren't enough of 'em.

The Drones are listed on halo3.com site. I hope they're more fun to fight. Though, they were not used much in Halo 2.

Because they are difficult?

The bugs die very quickly and the flying elites don't seem very strong either, so no. I just don't find them fun enemies to fight. Fighting face to face with enemies on the ground is much more enjoyable to me.
