The HD Movie thread

I finally saw Oceans 13 on Blu-ray last night. I heard that it was not a good transfer but HOLY HELL I was not expecting this. It is for me the worst high def transfer by far. Comcast HD VOD which usually is beyond bad was still better then this crap. With the horrible PQ in addition to the lossy DD5.1 sound, Warner should be embarrassed.

I was watching Rattatouille last night with the cine-explore feature on, and it was a really great experience. I do wish more of the featurettes were in HD, but it's great to see the extras presented in context. The commentary was lively, the artwork was nice, etc. The only thing I felt could've improved it a bit was if some of the stuff was presented in Bonus View PiP instead of pulling you out of the movie. Though some of the featurettes were too long for that approach. My wife even had some fun with the cooking mini-game.

And since I wasn't rushing through the disc, I saw the Sleeping Beauty Blu Ray trailer. Um.....wtf was that? Was I the only one that was thoroughly unimpressed with that? The part where they show the original and restore side by side was the only part that made the movie look good. I'm guessing it's the age of the film or something, but that was one ugly looking trailer with inconsistent colors etc.

That's because you haven't seen Traffic in HD. :lol

Although, in both cases, I was under the impression that the PQ issues were a result of director's intent. I didn't see O13 in theaters, but I just assumed that the crap PQ was how it was intended to look, with the oversaturated colors and grain.

I read about this a bit a few months ago, as I was pretty much of the same opinion as you. Here's the good news - the comparison scene is apparently the only restored scene from the trailer. Manabyte will probably know more.

Cancelled my Bonnie and Clyde Blu-Ray Disc.

Was so pumped for this movie, looks like it got a great transfer, but a Mono Sound-Track? Why couldnt Warner cough up $ and remaster.

I like that they put a mono track for purists.
I usually listen to that version over a strange surround remix on classic movies.

Here's the HDD review of B&C BTW... I've never seen the movie, but I want to just because of how much people talka bout it. I will probably wait for the HD-DVD to drop in price.

Anyway I watched We Own the Night last night... the audio and video were pretty decent, definately didn't blow me anyway or anything, but not bad. The movie itself was ok too.

After reading the review, here's the answer:

The Audio: Rating the Sound

Due to the unavailability of the original source elements for 'Bonnie & Clyde,' Warner has not produced a new surround remaster for the film. This Blu-ray offers only an English Dolby Digital 1.0 Mono track (192kbps), and there's little noteworthy about it.

As there is no surround presence or even stereo separation to speak of, the action is all from the front. At least the source that Warner did have to work with sounds rather good for a 1967 film, with a decent sense of realism and warmth. I expected worse -- high-end isn't nearly as brittle as other tracks of this vintage that I've heard, and there is a decent amount of low bass. Dialogue can suffer a bit, however, with some low tunes muffled, while louder scenes can grate on the eardrums. All things considered, however, this is a perfectly fine mono track.

Thanks for posting the review SlaughterX, holy crap it sounds so awesome.
Easily one of my fave movies of all time.
Looks like it will be gorgeous.

They should be embarassed for the movie as well.

I *liked* the first two, even the parts some people hated. But the third one.... wha'happened?

Uhhh, so after buying a full 1080p HDTV last weekend, I just ordered the Blu ray versions of 300 and Planet Earth off Amazon to see how good it looks on my shiny new Sony Bravia 40W3000. Two questions though:

1) I've read reviews about these two titles before ordering but just how good are they for showcasing my new TV?

2) How good is the PS3 as a Blu ray player?

:O Batman on blu-ray freaking GET.

Also, how's the Gattaca transfer?

Gattaca is an amazingly clean transfer in and of itself. All the clean lines and coloring of the cinematography rewards HD visuals more than most films. I consider it an excellent addition to my collection, and I'm starting to get really picky.

300's not a very good showcase at all, because of the intentional grain. It still looks good, but it's not a showpiece. Planet Earth will blow you away.

2) How good is the PS3 as a Blu ray player?
I'll leave this to others who may own standalones, but the PQ from the Ps3 is amazing, and aside from issues like multi channel outputs or decoding of certain high def audio sources, it's pretty much the default choice because of its price and versatility.

1) 300 looks great but has intentional grain. Planet Earth is definitely a "system seller" for high def.

2) The PS3 is an excellent BD player and the only one out so far that will be firmware updatable to BD profile 2.0.

The great thing about the Onkyo 885 and the Integra 9.8 is the Reon processor. That really helps. But unless Onkyo makes more reliable products, I'm not buying them. Plus, the Emotiva Pre/pro is a great piece of gear, giving me all I need for the money.

I know you had a bad experience with them, but I'm not aware of Onkyo being particularly unreliable.

BTW - Did you get your 805 replaced yet?

Thanks for the response guys.

Also, I was just browsing through this thread and noticed that there was talk of an inferior version of Planet Earth.

This is the one I bought. Did I get the right one?

Between myself and my dad we have two 705's the not so far step down from the 805. Ours work great, they even have little fans on the bottom, something the 805 lacked. My dads is in a pretty un-ideal location with a shelf less than 1/2 inch above it, enclosed in a wooden case with a Ps3 to the right of it.

Yes, thats the BBC narated by David Attenborough

No, the BBC version is the best version. The Discover Channel version supposedly has a different encode MPeg4 rather than VC-1? Also, it is 1080i... which I don't think really should be a problem, since the actual cameras taking the images were mostly 1080i or 720p. There are some parts that they used film however.

uh, that is the right one. The American one is narrated by Sigourney Weaver and the British one is narrated by David Attenborough. The one he's bought is narrated by David Attenborough. Did you even click the link? "Planet Earth - The Complete BBC Series [Blu-ray] Starring: David Attenborough"

Actually, I did check out the link. : ) I meant to type "Yes..." thanks for the correction.

My onkyo's have always been rock solid. My stereo receiver I bought over 10 years ago for $200 is still going strong...

so you're saying "yes" came out "no"? lol, understandable as I've done that a few times. stupid brain-to-fingers connection doesn't work all the time.

I'll agree with this, my $350 5.1 setup from 7 years ago still works great, and it's been used a ton (For my Computer, Consoles, and TV)

Anybody know the story on There Will Be Blood? Will there be a day and date hi-def release alongside the DVD?

Infuriatingly, no. The same appears to be the case with Cloverfield. Goddamn Paramount just had to cancel the HD-DVDs... Idiots.

I don't understand why they don't just switch to Blu Ray if it's already known to be the dominant hi-def medium.

Paramount has switched (back) to Blu-ray, but with them, it's all or nothing. The work that was done on the HD-DVD versions goes down the tubes and everything needs to be ported over to a different format now, hence the delays. Why they won't just release both versions is inexplicable and flat-out moronic.

Yeah, I was going to say "No, you got the right one..." just forgot second part of the thought. It's a great disc. I got the Discovery Channel version through the $29.99 deal, and it looks pretty good to me.

I've seen the BBC version however, and perhaps its my in my head, but I remember that one looking a bit better.

If nothing else, the collapse of HD-DVD has allowed me to amass a fairly large collection of HD-DVD movies for a very good price. I picked up a 360 HD-DVD drive (which also works fine with my PC as well as the 360) for $45, with the $249 price sticker still on it. I've also been able to buy a mass of HD-DVD titles for $10 each (they normally go for $45) at local stores that are dumping their stock.

My HD-DVD collection has now springboarded ahead of my Blu-Ray collection and for a very small cost. So, at least that's something good to have come out of this whole mess I suppose.

What are the chances that a dumb cashier at Wal-mart will price match the Amazon price on I Am Legend if I bring in a printout tomorrow?

Cosmic Bus said:
Zero. They can't do a price match without a manager.
Are you sure? I've gotten things price matched from ads I brought in before and the cashier would just override it. I'm just not sure how online prices work.

They've always had to get manager overrides for price matches I've brought in; maybe I'm wrong. You shouldn't be buying that stinker of a movie in the first place, but if you must, why don't you just buy it from Amazon?

Does it really show the power of blu ray??

Err I dunno? It was watching it in DTS for the first time so that made it a hell of a lot better.

Anyone heard anything on a Blu-Ray version of Lost in Translation? I watched it again last night and, while the actual imagery is still as beautiful as before, I'll be damned if it doesn't look really mediocre after watching NCfOM in hidef just a moment before. :lol

whoo, just opened the Blade Runner ultimate box suitcase of awesome. Really nice presentation. I'm a little upset that the artwork in the file was damaged at the top due to being moved around in the packaging, but I've learned to live with stuff like that since it happens all the time.

I'm watching the theatrical cut first (haven't seen it yet), I lol'd @ Ford's voice over work, it sounds so forced and stiff. The PQ is amazing for an older film and any film in general.

Anyone know how to watch the Ridley Scott intros? There's supposed to be one for each cut on disc 3, but I didn't see anything (I just chose the theatrical cut and it played right into the movie).
