I finally saw Oceans 13 on Blu-ray last night. I heard that it was not a good transfer but HOLY HELL I was not expecting this. It is for me the worst high def transfer by far. Comcast HD VOD which usually is beyond bad was still better then this crap. With the horrible PQ in addition to the lossy DD5.1 sound, Warner should be embarrassed.

I was watching Rattatouille last night with the cine-explore feature on, and it was a really great experience. I do wish more of the featurettes were in HD, but it's great to see the extras presented in context. The commentary was lively, the artwork was nice, etc. The only thing I felt could've improved it a bit was if some of the stuff was presented in Bonus View PiP instead of pulling you out of the movie. Though some of the featurettes were too long for that approach. My wife even had some fun with the cooking mini-game.
And since I wasn't rushing through the disc, I saw the Sleeping Beauty Blu Ray trailer. Um.....wtf was that? Was I the only one that was thoroughly unimpressed with that? The part where they show the original and restore side by side was the only part that made the movie look good. I'm guessing it's the age of the film or something, but that was one ugly looking trailer with inconsistent colors etc.

Although, in both cases, I was under the impression that the PQ issues were a result of director's intent. I didn't see O13 in theaters, but I just assumed that the crap PQ was how it was intended to look, with the oversaturated colors and grain.

Here's the HDD review of B&C BTW... I've never seen the movie, but I want to just because of how much people talka bout it. I will probably wait for the HD-DVD to drop in price.
Anyway I watched We Own the Night last night... the audio and video were pretty decent, definately didn't blow me anyway or anything, but not bad. The movie itself was ok too.

Uhhh, so after buying a full 1080p HDTV last weekend, I just ordered the Blu ray versions of 300 and Planet Earth off Amazon to see how good it looks on my shiny new Sony Bravia 40W3000. Two questions though:
1) I've read reviews about these two titles before ordering but just how good are they for showcasing my new TV?

300's not a very good showcase at all, because of the intentional grain. It still looks good, but it's not a showpiece. Planet Earth will blow you away.

Between myself and my dad we have two 705's the not so far step down from the 805. Ours work great, they even have little fans on the bottom, something the 805 lacked. My dads is in a pretty un-ideal location with a shelf less than 1/2 inch above it, enclosed in a wooden case with a Ps3 to the right of it.Onix said:

No, the BBC version is the best version. The Discover Channel version supposedly has a different encode MPeg4 rather than VC-1? Also, it is 1080i... which I don't think really should be a problem, since the actual cameras taking the images were mostly 1080i or 720p. Paramount has switched (back) to Blu-ray, but with them, it's all or nothing. The work that was done on the HD-DVD versions goes down the tubes and everything needs to be ported over to a different format now, hence the delays. Why they won't just release both versions is inexplicable and flat-out moronic.

If nothing else, the collapse of HD-DVD has allowed me to amass a fairly large collection of HD-DVD movies for a very good price. I picked up a 360 HD-DVD drive (which also works fine with my PC as well as the 360) for $45, with the $249 price sticker still on it. I've also been able to buy a mass of HD-DVD titles for $10 each (they normally go for $45) at local stores that are dumping their stock.
My HD-DVD collection has now springboarded ahead of my Blu-Ray collection and for a very small cost. So, at least that's something good to have come out of this whole mess I suppose.

whoo, just opened the Blade Runner ultimate box suitcase of awesome. Really nice presentation. I'm a little upset that the artwork in the file was damaged at the top due to being moved around in the packaging, but I've learned to live with stuff like that since it happens all the time.
I'm watching the theatrical cut first (haven't seen it yet), I lol'd @ Ford's voice over work, it sounds so forced and stiff. The PQ is amazing for an older film and any film in general.
Anyone know how to watch the Ridley Scott intros? There's supposed to be one for each cut on disc 3, but I didn't see anything (I just chose the theatrical cut and it played right into the movie).
