Got this from the nice Digital Leisure people over in Canada. The amount of work to save Space Ace from its Laserdisc and CD Rom days is incredible. It's still pretty gritty, but its detailed and colorful. A must have for any old school SA fans.
I always wanted to pick up Dragon's Lair, but I heard that when you died it would just skip you ahead to the next sequence instead of letting you replay the current one. Does Space Ace have the same problem?

never seen 2001 should i blind buy it?
If you're having trouble falling asleep and need some motivation, then yes.

is it like your typical kubrick film? I didn't really like clockwork orange, is it the same vibe?
It's slower and less exciting with a less satisfying main character and ending.

...IMO

hell no! rent it first. I like sci fi, I adore things which ask questions, pose theories or reflect on things such as humanity etc... but 2001 was a disappointment. I expected more really and it has a really annoying ending. awesome picture, but will I ever find a chance to show it to anyone? hell no, its not a film for a social occasion.

I consider 2001 the best scifi film of all time, hands down. That said, I would recommend you rent it first if you haven't seen it as it tends to be a very divisive movie. (i.e. most people will either feel like me about it or like kaizoku)

Finally got around to watching NCFOM on BR. The transfer is near flawless. One of the best looking movies I've seen yet on the format.

Even though I bought my PS3 last August, I finally bought my first BR movies. I went to Target before the B1G1 deal was over this week and picked up Casino Royale and Ratatouille (I haven't even seen the movie before, I'm taking a chance on you Pixar!)

The CR transfer is really impressive, and obviously the movie rocks too. Great choice there. Still need to get Ratatouille myself.

I did the exact same thing the other day...and hadn't seen Ratatouille either. After watching it I'm totally glad I bought it. I can see myself watching it many times.

My parents gave me my Easter gift. We're in Disney World so of course I got some Disney movies. The gameplan, Enchanted, & I Am Legend. The last one isn't Disney, but I really wanted it.

I'll be watching I Am Legend and all its extra features tomorrow afternoon.

Video:

If I had any concern at all with the French disc, it was that in some shots the picture didn't seem to look as bright or the hues as deep as I expected them to be. In the German edition, I might have noticed a touch deeper color and contrast, and maybe a tad more noticeable grain. On the other hand, I could have been imagining it. As with the French edition, the German disc has moments of stunning clarity, mostly in close-ups, and moments of slight softness, mostly in medium shots. Although both discs are quite good in HD picture quality, frankly, if you already own the French HD DVD and are only getting the German edition for its video, I could not guarantee that it's any better.

Audio:

The French Studio Canal sound engineers provide a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack in English and French, and the German Kinowelt folks provide a DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 track in English and German. In both cases, there is plenty of rear-channel activity, especially in the big fight and chase sequences. Indeed, the audio shows its strengths in its wide frequency response (the bass thunders), its strong dynamic contrasts (things explode with vigor), its powerful dynamic punch, and the all-around tautness and clarity of its reproduction.

Parting Thoughts:

Without question, "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" is the best of its breed. It's a milestone in the evolution of action films and their now-omnipresent computer-generated imagery. It goes without saying that in high definition "T2" looks and sounds better than ever, and the German edition provides all the bells and whistles you could possibly want. Decisions, decisions.

DVDTOWN.com rates this HD DVD:
Video 8
Audio 9
Extras 9
Film value 9

So, since it's Easter and all, any word on when Passion of the Christ is getting a Blu Ray release? And is there any other version besides the bare-bones dvd that was released.

I saw the movie Friday and it looks good for a dvd, though the crowd scenes did suffer from lack of details.

I've grabbed 4 Blurays in the last week, here are my brief thoughts on the lot of them :

Justice League : New Frontier - I've never read the comic book and I'm not the biggest DC comics fan on earth so this was more or less a blind buy but it was fairly entertaining and had a pretty well flawless transfer , great voice acting and a decent amount of special features hampered only by the fact that they were in standard like much of warners releases.
I'd give it a 4/5, definetly worth a viewing if you're a fan of comics or Bruce Timms interpretations of them.

Enchanted : Also a blind buy, I knew it was going to be a family oriented disney film but I wasn't too sure if it would be shlocky kids entertainment or good like a pixar film is. I was pleasently suprised that it falls closer to pixar or even classic disney then the pit of despair known as dreamworksitis. It's also a great transfer with some decent mostly HD special features. 4/5

Independence Day : OH YOU DID NOT SHOOT THAT GREEN SHIT AT ME!!! It's funny watching this now , thinking back to 1996 and how excited everyone was to watch this and in turn how well liked the movie was 12 years ago. The special effects have aged to varying degrees , the script has aged really poorly, somehow what I thought was awesome at the age of 13 is just... really really silly at the age of 25. I grabbed it on a 2 for 50 sales at futureshop (saved me like 4 dollars yay) but if you didn't want to take advantage of that I'd recommend paying no more then 20 bucks. Well I mean unless you still love this movie, ridiculousness and all. 3/5

i, Robot : I'd never seen it before and all I've done was watch a couple minutes to make sure it worked. What I saw was a stunning transfer which is to be expected given that it's a newer film and some decent special effects. It was the other movie I grabbed for 2/50. I would have gone for the will smith triology but sadly I can't find I am legend anywhere.

And on that note I now own 29 of these blasted HD movies. Over 800 dollars spent so far.

Two discs. Both the R-rated and the toned down Recut version of the movie. FOUR commentary tracks, and TONS of extras.

That seems to be too much per movie. Are you taking advantage of sales, shopping online etc.? Or maybe you have some expensive stuff bringing up the average, like Planet Earth etc.

And thanks for the post mana, any idea if/when we'll get an HD version of that movie? This week would've been a perfect time to release it.

I just did a rough estimate with a 30 dollar price per movie. Quite a few of them wound up being only 20 or 25 though I guess and spiderman I count as 3 movies despite that it's less then 20 bucks per movie so I suppose the real number is lower then 800 but not by much. I always miss the big deals and live in canada so we didn't get nearly as many of them.

I watched Top Gun on HD-DVD the other night and enjoyed it. Talk about bare bones, though, as it doesn't even have any special featurettes or even trailers, at least as far as I could see. The movie was soft in a couple of scenes but for the most part it looked fantastic. Some of the shots haven't aged all that well, for instance with today's tech we could film much better dogfighting scenes, but Top Gun in HD is pretty sweet.

Top Gun has some of the worst DNR I've ever seen.

Who knows. Since it's FOX it's doubtful they'll include any extras at all though.

So since the Ps3 is getting the 2.0 update, does that mean that there's a 2.0 standalone coming out at that time or is there already one on the market?

Purchased I am Legend, 2001, and No Country for Old Men on BD this last week. I must say I'm very impressed with Legend and (even more so) with 2001.

However No Country didn't really impress me that much on BD. Should have probably got it on DVD or rented it. Oh well. Side note- Movie of the year? eh.

The Kubrick stuff has amazing transfers, with the exception of Full Metal Jacket, which was re-released on Blu-ray due to a sub par transfer.

On the way. Some 1.1 profile players are rumored to be upgradeable, but who knows.
The 2.0 Panny was released in Europe I believe, coming here soon.

And no, you can't upgrade 1.1 players.
FW updates can't add an ethernet port. ;)

I'm not sure if it has happened, but there were talks of some 1.1 players coming out that would had ethernet (or wifi), but not the necessary memory to be 2.0 compatible. However, they would have a USB port, so you could use a thumbdrive to get 2.0.

Seems stupid. I can't imagine the cost of memory is that much that we'll see anyone bother.

Not official stats, but very encouraging numbers.

No Country Blu-ray sales on the rise

Retailers report that the Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment March 11 release is generating 10% to 15% of its sales on Blu-ray...

I'm thinking I Am Legend is going to easily surpass that.
Supposedly Appleseed Ex Machina pushed nearly 30% so far.

Oh, and Enchanted was a great movie. Pristine picture quality/audio all around, and just a fun flick.
And WTF is going on at Netflix... Site's been down the entire day.

I watched I Am Legend this weekend. The PQ is great, but nowhere near as great as No Country for Old Men, which for me is my new reference disc. Enchanted also looks amazing, and great movie too.

No Country's transfer didn't impress you or the movie? I can understand not liking the film, but the transfer is top notch. Looks amazing, especially the desert scenes.

Awesome news on the No Country sales.

We also blind-bought Enchanted and were not disappointed.

returned a blu ray movie on Friday and still no word if they received it. How long is the turnwaround suppose to be for netflix???

Their online system has been DOWN all day for some odd reason. I've never, even seen it go down.

I send them back on Saturday, and by Monday morning they already have it. Takes 1 business day usually.

Signs was so meh, the last good movie that guy made was Unbreakable. I am much more excited about The Recruit coming out in HD...
Different strokes and all that.
I thought the recruit was lame, it tried to be way to complicated. Spygame is better i think.

Gangs of New York Announced for Blu-ray
Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced that they will release the Martin Scorsese epic 'Gangs of New York' for Blu-ray on July 1st. No specs have been released at this time, but expect a 1080p AVC video presentation accompanied by a Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. No extras have been announced at this time, but it will most likely feature the same extras as was found on the two disc DVD release.

'Gangs of New York' is one of the most highly anticipated Blu-ray titles, mostly because it has been rumored to be coming out on Blu-ray for so long. Disney will surely give this title the star treatment it deserves, and will utilize Blu-ray's space to showcase the film in an uninterrupted form.

As soon as official specs are announced, we will be sure to report them.
nice.
