damn thing was sold out at the BB I went to so I settled for Robin Hood and Afro Samurai. I was thinking of getting Heroes (and a few weeks ago I was set on getting Heroes) but I think I'll wait for S3 to see if it's worth bothering. I loved a lot of the S1 episodes and would like to have them but I'll wait.

you certainly didn't settle on robin hood.

Is the show any good? I was considering buying it, but have never seen a single scene of the show.
not the TV show (it's alright, I guess) but the movie from Warner. I bought it because I heard so many good things about it plus I want to tell Warner that it's ok to do this with old movies and I'll buy 'em if they make 'em. Can't wait to watch it this weekend for the first time.

LOS ANGELES — The Walt Disney Company is dispatching Pinocchio, Snow White and a team of other characters in its effort to accelerate consumer adoption of next-generation DVD technology.

Disney, like other media companies, is counting on high-definition Blu-ray discs — and companion technology that connects them to the Internet — to reinvigorate its highly profitable home entertainment business. But so far, Blu-ray players are selling more slowly than expected, apparently because people are not convinced they need a better DVD experience.

So Disney is sending in the troops. The company will release five “platinum” titles from its library in the Blu-ray format over the next two years, hoping that classic animated movies will spur wider interest.

The films are “Pinocchio,” “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” “Fantasia,” “Fantasia 2000” and “Beauty and the Beast.” The company had previously announced plans to introduce one such title, “Sleeping Beauty.”

All the DVDs will include unusual features geared toward a generation that embraces interactivity and social networking. Viewers can watch a movie in tandem with friends in other locations, while they chat using a laptop or cellphone (the comments appear on the screen).

Viewers will also be able to compete against others around the world at trivia or send what Disney is calling movie mail, video images of themselves that appear within the context of the movie.

Such activities are possible because of a technology called BD Live that connects Blu-ray discs with the Internet.

Bob Chapek, president of Disney’s home entertainment unit, said that his company hoped the animated favorites would help it “break past early adopters” to a wider group of consumers.

“BD Live is not a niche product,” Mr. Chapek said. “We see mass adoption of the technology.”

Mr. Chapek said that “Snow White,” last available in 2001, had helped start the market for traditional DVDs. “The power of these titles is incredible,” he said.

Disney needs all the muscle it can find. Sales of Blu-ray players have been disappointing — although the industry has big hopes for the coming holiday season — and players compatible with BD Live just became available a few months ago.

They are also expensive: Blu-ray players that function with BD Live are priced from $300 to $700, much more than regular Blu-ray machines.

Making DVDs exciting is a trick that movie studios are desperate to pull off. After years of blistering growth, domestic DVD sales fell 3.2 percent last year, to $15.9 billion, the first annual drop in the medium’s history, according to Adams Media Research.

Blu-ray sales are growing fast, but still represent a tiny part of the business. The industry estimate for sales of Blu-ray discs in 2008 is nearly $1 billion, up from $170 million last year.

I would like to see The Lion King on Blu-ray. My favorite Disney film.

My copy of Transformers on Blu-ray shipped yesterday. Haven't seen it since I saw it in a theater so it will be nice to see it again.

beauty and the beast will be a ripper - I sold my double disc dvd for a profit if you can believe it. Went out of print so quickly.

alright looked over the titles, will be buying all the titles. classic disney for the win.

NOW FUCKING RELEASE THE PIXARS ALREADY!!

I'd buy Beauty and the Beast. The two-disc DVD is great but it looks like shit because they squeezed three versions of the film onto one disc.

i'll probably get fantasia and beauty and the beast.

However, if disney really wanted huge sellers, they would release their two best movies, the Lion King and Aladdin.

What have you got lined up for the next few months? its starting to get expensive.

Received Transformers a couple of days ago. Already have Iron man, Matrix box and Speed Racer preordered, and just now added Kung Fu Panda, Wall-e and Robin Hood (movie not TV). Holding off on Indy for now but Band of Brothers is tempting.

And there are still quite a few big summer movies to come, and Casablanca (hopefully available in a non-special edition case)

How the West Was Won and Cool Hand Luke are on the way, and I'd like to get the Fall but I'm not going to pay $30 for it, so that's probably going to be Netflixed until a better price comes along.

After those three, Chungking Express is the only other thing I'll be buying until next year going by the release lists.

Don't you just love reliable industry sources? Us too. Ours have just checked in with more new DVD and Blu-ray street dates, this time for a trio of MUCH anticipated Warner titles. Here's what to expect in November and December...

11/11 - Star Wars: Clone Wars
12/2 - Get Smart
12/9 - The Dark Knight

Word is, there will be FOUR different versions of The Dark Knight, including single-disc and 2-disc DVDs, a 3-disc Blu-ray and some kind of Blu-ray limited edition packaged with cool swag.

3 disc Blu-Ray?

*faints*

Fantasia had better not be censored anymore now that Eisner is gone, then again we still don't have Song of the South; so it's doubtful we'll get the uncensored Fantasia.

The pixelated zoom-in censorship is going to look SOOO bad in HD.

Looks like Best Buy is running a fairly decent sale on some Blu-ray titles next week; I'm thinking about picking up A Clockwork Orange, March of the Penguins, and The Aviator for $15, and Shoot 'Em Up, 300, and Pan's Labyrinth for $20. These prices aren't much different from what you can find online, but it's nice if you like buying in person, or have a Reward Zone card.

Saw Saawariya on BD and it was fucking awesome. I have a soft spot for hindi films and wow, this was amazing. Whoever was in charge of set design seriously needs a medal. Breathtaking.

I was curious about Saawariya, but sooo many people have told me how much the movie sucked and how I should just completely avoid it. :lol

Also bombed pretty hard commercially, iirc.

Only difference between 3 and 2 discs seems to be the Digital Copy....which is fucking stupid

Wow that 3 disc edition has some butchered art work.

Oh yeah I picked up Galapagos and The Shining on HD-DVD for 9 bucks each on DDD.com. Anyone care to comment on Galapagos? I've heard it is good.

The Dark Knight on Blu-ray will be the best thing happening this year.

What is this digital copy thing?

A copy for you to download onto your computer. the Blu-ray release of Speed Racer is gonna have it.

Anyway, i'm dying to hear about the bonus features for TDK. Please make a commentary track Nolan!

Do they really need an extra disc for such a thing?

yes because it needs to work in your computer, which most likely won't have a bluray drive, so they need to use a DVD. The other two discs are blurays.

I picked up Justice League Season 1 on Blu-Ray. I'm using my PS3 on an SDTV. Shouldn't it fill the entire screen? Why is it shown in a box, centered in the middle of my screen?

Dude, seriously?

NICE!
up nearly ten times? but blu-ray is failing and our economy etc etc.

And yes there is a lot of good stuff coming out soon. My wallet hurts.

The Nightmare Before Christmas is a phenomenal disc. The PQ is stunning; the restore/remaster job they did honestly makes it look like a new film (holds its own against The Corpse Bride, for sure). It's really a must-own if you even remotely enjoy the movie.

Because that's the aspect ratio for that season? Or something.

So what are some good showcase Blu-rays for audio?

I've got:

Black Hawk Down
Cloverfield
300
Ocean's trilogy
Planet Earth

I just got a new sound system and would like to see what it can do. Any of the above BDs have scenes with great audio and surround effects?

HDTV is always widescreen - there are no 4:3 modes. The PS3 is downsampling it to SD but as far as it is concerned, the original video is in widescreen HD (with black bars on the sides)

Black Hawk Down, Cloverfield and 300 are reference quality according to AVS.

Pirates of the Caribbean, any of the Pixar movies (Ratatouille, Cars) and I, Robot also offer reference quality picture and sound.

Don't forget Transformers just around the corner too!
