So I finally watched Blade Runner all the way through. I loe the movie, and I think everyone ought to get it, but I was a little underwhelmed. It does look better than ever, but it's not always as crisp as a lot of other movies, IMHO. The street scenes and opening shots are all amazing, but a lot of the one-on-one character stuff looks soft. Perhaps that's how it was shot. Also, I didn't see a lot of differences in the Final Cut over the Director's Cut. Certainly nothing major.

In any case, it's still a great movie and deserves to be seen in HD.
Yea i watched it the other day as well. A lot of reviewers were reveling as this is some sort of miracle transfer. 2001 easily outclasses it. And to be honest i dont see how it got 5/5 stars for video.

Picked up Kingdom of Heaven yesterday. In my eyes, this is one of the most impressive discs released so far. Excellent video and amazing sound.

I rented Heartbreak Kid on HDDVD. I thought the movie was a hilariously fun movie!! I enjoyed it very much and the PQ is top Tier 1 quality at least. With all the attention on Judd Apatow right now, sadly it feels like the Farrelly brothers are yesterday's news.

while video reviews should be objective to a large degree (transfer quality, artifacting, etc) there is definitely a subjective level to them as well. From my viewings as well as the info around the net on this, it is very possible this is the best Blade Runner will ever be able to look. Given that it does look very good (even if not pristine like new transfers or major remastering efforts) and it probably physically cannot look better, I can understand a 5/5.

I thought the Bourne Ultimatum picture quality on HD-DVD was a mixed bag.

One scene it looked great, the next it looked like a normal DVD.

Really? I thought it looked fantastic. AAA transfer for me.

casablanca looks better, and its 60 years old. i think grand prix looks better to, at 40 years old.

bladerunner does look great though.

Grand Prix is one of the best restorations I've ever seen, although all of Warner's 65mm high def titles are absolutely stunning -- much more impressive to my eyes than almost any modern films in HD. Whenever I see a new 4k restoration pop up on the release listings, it's an automatic "must see" even if I don't care for the film itself (i.e. Blade Runner).

I must thank Warner for sending me 2001 and The Shining for free. :)

that puts my HD movie collection up to 5. :) Nothing special when looking at some of your guys' lists, but its a good start, and it is all gravy so far.

The Last Samurai, Planet Earth, Blade Runner (5 disc), 2001: A Space Odyssey, and The Shining

I haven't been disappointed by the movies at all in terms of PQ/AQ.

What's the deal with this 2001? Did WB quietly do a major restoration or something? Because I swear it looks better than The Departed (the only other WB disc I own).

Blade Runner HD master is glorious.

Anyone have any good caps of it? The lighting is simply unparalleled. I can't believe what an extraordinary visual accomplishment the film is. And all with real-world lighting. No modern post-production tricks like digital grading and the like. Ridley Scott's eye = unmatched. Wish he'd go back to scifi and can the whole historical-fiction act.

After seeing lots of props for 2001, I caved in and bought it. I remember watching the VHS version in English class. This new version looks the best out of all my HD-DVDs!

Watching 2001 in HD is really like watching it for the first time. Okay, I'll shut up about 2001 for a little while.

I can't wait to check out The Shining. How do Full Metal Jacket and Unforgiven look? I'm thinking of picking them up if that Amazon sale is still going.

They did an incredible job restorting, it is a little soft in select places like the dawn of man opening scene, but you really really have to look for it.
It does look incredible though.

So we need Tombstone in HD. I watched it yesterday on one of my HD movie channels, it looked very good.
Conan the Barbarian also looked fantastic.
Accepted looked great as well, but thats already out on HD DVD i believe.

Saw Traffic last night. What a good movie that is. Along with Babel, I'm starting to love these films with intertwining vignettes. What would be another good one?

As far as PQ, it's crap. Now I know the intent from the director was for the film to have the color toned blue and gold and the whites blooming and the blacks crushed, but I don't believe this is an HD transfer. There was a thread about this on AVS. I didn't notice any compression artifacts (which is usually what gives away a dvd transfer from an HD transfer, but the film just lacked detail. Not that any of this prevented me from enjoying this film. The audio also seemed subpar.

Last night I watched Die Hard (I got DH 1 and 3 in a recent sale).

Like Blade Runner, I was underwhelmed by the PQ. Better than DVD for sure, and occasionally great, but still not as sharp as a lot of movies, even older ones.

And this isn't about the HD aspect, but Blade Runner and Die Hard are tow of my favorite 80's movies, but seeing them both in recent succession, they both seem a bit dated to me now. Blade Runner, it was mostly the hair and clothes and soundtrack, but also the backlit fans and blinds. Die Hard also has plenty of fans and blinds. Die Hard also has the obnoxious Ellis who is a walking 80's stereotype I could deal with never seeing again.

Anyway, the movie is still a fun game of cat and mouse, but I think I may have hit the point where I like DH3 better. I'll watch it soon and see. DH used to be, hands-down, my favorite action movie, and it's still pretty great.

you were underwhelmed by Blade Runner? i was amazed at how well it held up to be honest, and the HD restoration for me actually made all the practical effects more convincing than they'd ever been. all that fine detail that comes out of them, with all the grit and grain and matte lines that used to be associated with process shots removed, it looked so much better than i'd expected.

when did you last see blade runner on DVD? the upgrade is insane... and it makes me pine for Alien so badly.

Well, I was talking about the movie itself, but...

Oh, the Blade Runner DVD is crap in comparison, no question. And one of the scenes in the the Blu-ray are amazing... but others just aren't. It's held up pretty well, but it's not as amazing as some other movies that are nearly as old. A lot of the dark indoor head- and mid-shots are soft. The action is all good and the streets and set really shine, though.

For example of what I mean, look at the Pris and Dekkard shots above, and contrast with the landscape shots (which are immaculate).

soundtrack

:( I want synth soundtracks to make a comeback. I loved that Mass Effect has a faux Vangelis soundrtrack.

I'm sick of the shitty scores most movies have now. If I hear intense percussion during an action sequence one more time I'm going to go mad.

Just watched Unforgiven on Blu-Ray. Top quality movie, had some rather average dialogue in places but in other places it was superb. Great writing.

PQ on the whole was excellent, some soft scenes, but it's a great upgrade from DVD. Probably my fav western.

^^^Im dying to see LOST, but Disney havnt announced it for UK release yet. :(

what's coming out this week besides 3:10 to yuma (which is awesome btw)?

i'm still trying to find shoot em up on blu-ray as well... wtf is going on with that.

Sunshine
The Rock

Both immediate buys IMO!

Cany anyone comment on Corpse Bride on blu-ray? This movie is $15 at BB this week so I was thinking of picking it up. I've never seen it, but I've wanted to. Is it worth purchasing or should I just rent it?

Also, at what price do you guys buy a movie versus rent one even if you think you may only watch it once or twice?

It's already been said...

But I grew up watching a grainy vhs of 2001. Yesterday after helping my dad adjust his 1080p 58" panny plasma, I threw in the HD-DVD of it. It's probably my dad's favorite movie.

We sat there in awe watching the monkeys, you could see the nuances in the performances, monkeys in the background I had never focused on. The pebbles, omg the sun. The space models, all of it, amazing. To think it was filmed in 1968, it was like looking back in time.

I've see the movie tons of times but never bothered to realize that Howard Johnsons was in the Space Station :lol

Just finished 3:10 to Yuma on BluRay. It was a beautiful thing. One thing I have enjoyed about BluRay is it makes the second viewing post theater just as good.

Also where is the best place to get good deals? Last time I saw anything were B1G1 with a selection of about 15 or so at Best Buy around the holidays.

I already bought the Rock and Con-Air months ago (UK import). The Rock looked awesome, but Con-Air had some serious edge enhancement going on.

Watched a couple HD flicks the past couple days:

Bourne Ultimatum: Totally mixed bag as PQ goes. Some scenes are super sharp, others are as soft as the DVD. I even flipped it over and watched a couple SD scenes and I could barely tell a difference in many of them. The shaky cam did not bug me in the theater but on my 40" LCD it drives me nuts.

Chronicles of Riddick: Wow, sharp all the way through. You really get to see how awesome the sets and costumes are in HD. I know this movie gets a lot of shit because of Vin and how much better the first film was, but this movie is a different beast altogether. Great use of color and lighting. One of the best looking HD-DVDs I own.

Transformers: Fucking awesome in HD. Everything on this disc is perfect PQ wise. This is THE best HD disc I own. Say what you want about the flick but it is reference material for HD.

Corpse Bride is reference quality for the picture.

can anyone comment on sunshine? kinda intrigued by the concept... but is it a good movie?

Two thirds of it is a great movie, and one third is an OK movie. With proper expectations, you'll be fine to watch/buy iy.

Fast motion + LCD = lulz

It's not ghosting that is getting me, something about that film on an LCD gives me a headache though. I can see very little ghosting on Bourne and I saw absolutely none on Transformers. For whatever reason Bourne fucks with my head.

Just a reminder that this thread exists, for people who don't want to wade through the torrent of rumors and news about HD media formats.

PS: Gotta get myself 3:10 to Yuma, and need to decide if Sunshine is worth it.

I watched 3:10 last night, and to be honest I was a little underwhelmed with the PQ. There was an overall hazy softness to the image that just didn't look right to me, although I suppose it was filmed that way intentionally. There were some standout moments, but overall I don't think it's a showpiece for image. The movie itself is terrific, with some really crackerjack performances. Well worth owning.

Recently watched Shoot 'Em Up, and although I didn't care for the film, the PQ is top-notch, the kind you show off to dazzle your friends with HD. LOL at Paul Giamatti's bumpy forehead.

I also bought Pan's Labyrinth, and there's a very impressive three-dimensional quality to the picture. I bought it blind, knowing very little about the film, and was a little taken aback at how dark and adult it was, just heartbreaking. Highly recommended.

zodiac looks great... might have to pick it up. i'm definately picking up Pan's Labyrinth in HD-DVD too while i still can.

collectors item :)

It's a movie with beautiful photography and scene design, almost worth it for that alone. I didn't see it in HD the first time I watched it, but having seen the trailers for it, I regret it now, and really want to see it in HD.

It's a sci-fi movie that shoots very high, higher than any sci-fi movie in ages perhaps, but it misses the greatness of something like 2001: Space Odyssey, that it was clearly aspiring to. Still, it's very enjoyable to watch for just about anyone, and not just fans of sci-fi genre.

There's SO few sci-fi movies, especially nowadats that even try to reach that kind of philosophical heights... Solyaris, 2001, Clockwork Orange and Blade Runner (even that last one is a 'maybe', actually) are almost the only ones I can think of, Sunshine actually goes there, but doesn't quite reach where those have.

For those interested in classics in HD, I will be picking up the boxed set of That's Entertainment! soon, and will try to write up a thorough report on image quality and such. No one's really talking about it anywhere, so I think it might have tanked sales-wise (like every other classic film has, which sucks for us classic film fans).

I picked up Terminator 2 b-r on boxing day. I heard the transfer was good...but didn't realize it was just the regular edition. Is it worth keeping this version? Does the extended edition add very much? I may return it and pick up the extended edition when it inevitably hits b-r.
Yes, it's definitely my preferred version. It gives a lot of explanation to how the Terminator is learning things (and has a lot more character development scenes in general) and it injects a much needed dose of Michael Biehn.
I just bought Terminator 2 BRD with a gift card I received at Christmas. It was only 20$...

After watching the movie, I wanted to check the bonus features. I found out why that movie was only 20$ then... x_x

Was it an extended edition? Mine doesn't says EXTENDED nowhere on the box as far as I remember...
