I thought the Bourne Ultimatum picture quality on HD-DVD was a mixed bag.
One scene it looked great, the next it looked like a normal DVD.

Yea i watched it the other day as well. A lot of reviewers were reveling as this is some sort of miracle transfer. 2001 easily outclasses it. And to be honest i dont see how it got 5/5 stars for video.Ignatz Mouse said:So I finally watched Blade Runner all the way through. I loe the movie, and I think everyone ought to get it, but I was a little underwhelmed. It does look better than ever, but it's not always as crisp as a lot of other movies, IMHO. The street scenes and opening shots are all amazing, but a lot of the one-on-one character stuff looks soft. Perhaps that's how it was shot. Also, I didn't see a lot of differences in the Final Cut over the Director's Cut. Certainly nothing major.
In any case, it's still a great movie and deserves to be seen in HD.
while video reviews should be objective to a large degree (transfer quality, artifacting, etc) there is definitely a subjective level to them as well. From my viewings as well as the info around the net on this, it is very possible this is the best Blade Runner will ever be able to look. Given that it does look very good (even if not pristine like new transfers or major remastering efforts) and it probably physically cannot look better, I can understand a 5/5.captive said:Yea i watched it the other day as well. bladerunner does look great though.
They did an incredible job restorting, it is a little soft in select places like the dawn of man opening scene, but you really really have to look for it.Mifune said:What's the deal with this 2001? Did WB quietly do a major restoration or something? Because I swear it looks better than The Departed (the only other WB disc I own).

Anyone have any good caps of it? The lighting is simply unparalleled. I can't believe what an extraordinary visual accomplishment the film is. And all with real-world lighting. No modern post-production tricks like digital grading and the like. Ridley Scott's eye = unmatched. Wish he'd go back to scifi and can the whole historical-fiction act.
you were underwhelmed by Blade Runner? i was amazed at how well it held up to be honest, and the HD restoration for me actually made all the practical effects more convincing than they'd ever been. all that fine detail that comes out of them, with all the grit and grain and matte lines that used to be associated with process shots removed, it looked so much better than i'd expected.Ignatz Mouse said:Last night I watched Die Hard (I got DH 1 and 3 in a recent sale).
Like Blade Runner, I was underwhelmed by the PQ. Better than DVD for sure, and occasionally great, but still not as sharp as a lot of movies, even older ones.
And this isn't about the HD aspect, but Blade Runner and Die Hard are tow of my favorite 80's movies, but seeing them both in recent succession, they both seem a bit dated to me now. Blade Runner, it was mostly the hair and clothes and soundtrack, but also the backlit fans and blinds. Die Hard also has plenty of fans and blinds. Die Hard also has the obnoxious Ellis who is a walking 80's stereotype I could deal with never seeing again.
Anyway, the movie is still a fun game of cat and mouse, but I think I may have hit the point where I like DH3 better. I'll watch it soon and see. DH used to be, hands-down, my favorite action movie, and it's still pretty great.

i'm still trying to find shoot em up on blu-ray as well... wtf is going on with that.
The shaky cam did not bug me in the theater but on my 40" LCD it drives me nuts.
LunaticPuma said:Cany anyone comment on Corpse Bride on blu-ray? This movie is $15 at BB this week so I was thinking of picking it up. I've never seen it, but I've wanted to. Is it worth purchasing or should I just rent it?
Also, at what price do you guys buy a movie versus rent one even if you think you may only watch it once or twice?

It's a movie with beautiful photography and scene design, almost worth it for that alone. I didn't see it in HD the first time I watched it, but having seen the trailers for it, I regret it now, and really want to see it in HD.snorggy said:can anyone comment on sunshine? kinda intrigued by the concept... but is it a good movie?
I just bought Terminator 2 BRD with a gift card I received at Christmas. It was only 20$...Danne-Danger said:Yes, it's definitely my preferred version. It gives a lot of explanation to how the Terminator is learning things (and has a lot more character development scenes in general) and it injects a much needed dose of Michael Biehn.Decado said:I picked up Terminator 2 b-r on boxing day. I heard the transfer was good...but didn't realize it was just the regular edition. Is it worth keeping this version? Does the extended edition add very much? I may return it and pick up the extended edition when it inevitably hits b-r.
