I did not see it in the theater because I was pretty sure that it would suck, but I rented it on blu and bought it the next day.
It is really good and looks amazing.

Although I don't currently have that channel, I appreciate your postings of their broadcastings for the week. Especially since this is a thread for HD movies, people forget sometimes that broadcast movies qualify too (as do DD honestly.) I'd like to think that in addition to discussing the movies, we could discuss the PQ as well in the various forms that HD media comes.

For instance, it would be interesting if someone who owns Close Encounters on Blu watched the HDNet Movie broadcast and saw how it measured up. That would give us somewhat an idea of what to expect from movies that are currently only on broadcast, like Lawrence of Arabia and how they might look on Blu (presumably always the best quality.)

There's a lot of minor catalog-type stuff that will likely never see the light of day on Blu-ray (or HD-DVD), so I love having it as part of my basic FiOS package. I queue up a few of them on my DVR usually just to check out the quality. Some are extremely good.

I think this thread should also cover HD TV show stuff to an extent. I'm such a HD snob now... I refuse to watch any non-HD channels/shows on my HDTV.

I know the feeling about not wanting to watch SD stuff on your set, I can't stand watching movies that aren't in HD anymore either.

Have you found an efficient way of getting that stuff off your DVR in HD and archiving it? Or do you just watch/delete? Because you're right, I see movies all the time that aren't on blu/hd and may never even make the transition, and most of the times they look great.

Thanks for posting about The Host being on sale guys, I've been wanting to pick that up. I went ahead and ordered Con-Air and The Rock too, so now all I need is for a Bad Boys 2 release on Blu and I'll have my favorite Bay films covered. So bad but soooo good.

The Rock has Sean Connery and was directed by AWESOME. If you have to choose between an AWESOME movie and a movie not directed by AWESOME you obviously want to select the AWESOME movie.

We have The Rock, but Sony needs to release both Bad Boys, Disney needs to do Armageddon (hopefully AWESOME's director's cut from the Criterion), Warner needs to release The Island and then Paramount can do Transformers. That way we will have the full AWESOME catalog on Blu-Ray.

Moviestop broke street date, so I picked up 30 Days of Night this afternoon.

Nifty little vampire flick, it's the most enjoyable mainstream horror film I have seen in a while, with genuine tension. The vampires are just flat-out ruthless, and you really root for the surviving characters. Children get et, and there's a jaw-dropping overhead tracking shot of the town during the initial vampire onslaught that gave me the shivers. PQ is outstanding, lots of detail and nice blacks/shadows. Good sound. Haven't checked out the special features yet, but there's an hour-long doc, and a graphic novel to film comparison.

I just watched Dan In Real Life. This movie had me smiling and laughing the whole way through. A very pleasant and feel-good movie but doesn't feel cheesy or over-the-top. It's definitely worth a watch. I don't know if I'd want to spend the money to buy this on BD but it makes a good case. Reminds me a lot of The Family Stone which I also enjoyed.

I am being told that this supposedly ties to Weinstein, I do not know but I figure that I will throw it out here...

Genius Products is hinting it will release future titles in Blu-ray Disc.

The admission came during a Genius investors’ conference in Dana Point, Calif on Feb. 19, the same day that Toshiba said it would shortly stop making HD DVD players. Through the first several months of last year, Genius was releasing titles in HD DVD, but has stalled since then.
To the best of my knowledge, Genius hasn’t yet streeted a major title in high-def in 2008.

But it appears that Genius put on the high-def distribution brakes to see how the format war chips would fall.

“Whether its Blu-ray or HD DVD…that was solved today that HD DVD backed out,” said Genius CEO Trevor Drinkwater during the company’s presentation at the Roth Capital Partners event. “Blu-ray is the last format in, and that has cleared the way for the industry to get aggressive around next generation DVD.”

A spokesman for Genius said there weren’t immediate plans for the company to specify its high-definition strategy. Drinkwater likewise did not detail upcoming Genius high-def releases during his speech.

HDMI carries both video and audio in one cable. The optical port on PS3 is provided in case your receiver doesn't support HDMI.

hmm...so in the PS3 menu you would choose HDMI for the sound? Everytime I do that nothing comes up so Sony told me to get a digital optical cable.

I have the HDMI cable connected to the TV from the PS3, and one from the TV to the reciever. I just got a new Onkyo reciever so I'm gonna fuck around with that, but even though I know it's not confusing it sure seems so.

Am I doing it right though? HDMI to the TV and not from the reciever to the PS3?

No you need to plug the PS3's HDMI into the receiver and the receiver one into the TV.

Anyone know if the departed has 1 or 2 discs? I just bought it, and opened it up and theres a place for a second disc but only 1 is there

Sorry, I meant a good version of T2 on Blu-ray. The original Blu-ray release doesn't have that many extras and it's the theatrical version.
I bought it and, luckily, realized that so i could return it. They just want to milk another couple releases.

I'm really surprised, The Rock and Life of Brian arrived today. Very fast shipping from Amazon. I guess I caught them at a good time. Watching the Rock now :)
