Personally, the Hispanic "paradox" to me is how we apparently live healthier lives, but so many Spanish/Hispanic dishes look like they're through the roof in sodium or something. :lol
The sodium preserves our insides.

WTH! Didn't your mom teach you how to make your own?

Dude...my mom, my 2 grandmas and my 8 aunts all showed me how to make them.

Just wouldn't mind having a woman around, especially if she can make them too!

Soda in a bag, anyone?
Holy shit. I spent all of junior high on this sweet elixir of the gods. :lol Until someone started the rumor that it gave cancer. Then nobody drank it like that anymore.

I still miss the occasional caguama en bolsa, however.

I'm another Dominican on Gaf. Onion tea, cup of water under the bed, patrons saints with candles next to them, lots of bachata, and most importantly bistec con tostones keep us Dominicans living for a very long time. Family+Catholicism+ Malta Goya= living till your 80's:lol

About 13 years ago in michoacan i used to buy drinks in a bag. They were awesome

I used to get in Mexico as a kid too. It was cool at first but I liked the glass bottles better because we only have aluminum cans here. The store I went to insisted on giving it to you in a bag cause they wanted to keep the bottles, Not sure but I think they charged me more for getting it in a bottle.

I don't think there should be a new thread. This thread is fine. Plus, it has an awesome name already.

Regarding the drinks in a bag, whenever I go to Guanajuato, Mexico...I always love to buy orange juice/chocolate milk in a bag since that's the way they sell them over there. I don't recall people selling soda in a bag over there, unfortunately. Still, it was pretty cool. It tripped me out at first when I first went because I had never seen something like that, but it was the norm and I accustomed to it very quickly.

OMG!!!! Not for the hiccups but my mom and teachers made me do that whenever I had nosebleeds!
Ohh shit, I just asked my moms about that (because it was so long ago when she did that) but the penny on the forehead was for nosebleeds! I swear I remember it being for hiccups. :lol She said I was right about the string on the forehead for hiccups though, lol.

She would get a little piece of string and wet it with her mouth and put it on my forehead to stop em. This is too funny. :lol Another one I remember: to get the cold out of your eye (eye boogers) she would dip cotton balls in coffee and wipe our eyes with it to clean em.

How about this for Ear aches:

Warmed up vegetable/olive oil
Pour it in the ear
place cotton ball over it
Have to hold completely still the entire night/day while sleeping so it didn't spill all over the bed :lol

but it fucking worked!

I swear we must have tried that. :lol So many home remedies when you're young. :D

Yeah, it could be like 72 degrees at night here and moms' still be like "put on a jacket, it's cold". What?!

Also, this could just be a Puerto Rican thing, but did anybody ever get the penny on the forehead if you got the hiccups? I used to get that when I was young. It was that or a little piece of string wet with saliva on the forehead.
OMFG. YES. That the infant hiccup cure! :lol :lol :lol :lol

I wanted to ask this because I was curious about the subject of colorism in the Hispanic population As a black man I'm well aware of it in the black community and have experience with it. I was wondering if there is the same issue within the Hispanic community. I'm not sure if this is related to colorism or if it's more of racism, but I have noticed that just about all the famous Hispanics that I can name here in America are of lighter skin. The two exceptions I can think of George Lopez and this guy I don't know his name, but I've seen him appear in a few movies. They weren't movies that I were interested in so that's why I don't know his name, but anyway why are most of these Hispanics I see on tv are of the lighter tone?

This thread brings back so much memories. Si es Goya, tiene que ser bueno.

Any way to answer your question, there's a couple of them that are darker skin such as Zoe Saldaña and Dania Ramirez that manage to get roles. However, since it's the U.S. (this happens in other countries as well) White skin is idealized. So when people automatically see a white Hispanic actress, they automatically assume that all Hispanics are white and have a sexy accent (stereotypes). Sofia Vergara is one of them, as well as Michelle Rodriguez, and Salma Hayek; it's insane.

I can say that I'm of African decent in some way, but in the end of the day, I'm still Hispanic. It's an identity issue that many Dominicans are struggling with. In a country like Brazil, people will more willingly and openly accept that they are of African descent. However, it's the white skinned soap opera actors that appear on tv. It's a complex issue, but a very fascinating one nonetheless.

EDIT: I forgot to add, that one thing that I hate about Hollywood is that they'll have an actor of one ethnicity play a character of another ethnicity. Zoe Saldaña a Dominican actress played a Colombian woman in Colombiana(which I never saw and refuse to see); that gets on my nerves. I'm sure Colombians must have been outraged too; they could have gotten Sofia Vergara for the role instead.

All of these people are hispanic and a lot of times people think they are african american.

And holy shit at seeing this thread. It was the beginning of HispaniGaf

Interesting. I'm am very surprised that Tatyanna Ali is half latina, for the longest I thought she was Muhammed Ali's daughter. That's what my big brother told me and then later on I heard wrong and thought she was half Indian. A couple of those other people surprised me too. I always could tell Christina Millan was half latina, but I was surprised she was shunned because of her skin tone because in the black community she would be considered light skin.

The colorism issue sounds mostly the same as it does with blacks.

in the dominican republic its an interesting thing because even dark skinned a lot of times dont think they are "black". And a lot of times those same people will put down haitians for BEING black.

Being part of a strong family usually does wonders for your psychological health. A steady and constant faith helps too. They help you deal with stress and generally reduces the toll that stress takes on your body.

I'm not saying this is what makes Hispanics live longer, just a little something to throw out there. I have no idea why latinos have healthier lives. It must be the tamarind candies.
Yeah, I think this has more to do with it. Cultures that emphasize taking care of the elderly just tend to live longer. Hispanic families take care of their old.

Aw I missed out on the whole 'people with skin' and racial community thread merging and disbanding fiasco. I'm half-hispanic but not very distinguishable from being white except in the summer when I tan a shitload.
I love latinas very very much.

Half Mexican half Japanese...
My Great Grandmother on my Mexican side lived to 103...

Hispanic and Asian? That's a combo I've never seen before. Wonder what that looks like.

Cheech Marin?

YT'd him. Forgot about him, but that's not who I was talking about. The guy I was thinking of is younger and darker.

I also forgot about Zoe Saldana. Despite her last name when I look at her I see black.
