gameloft is pretty much banking on capcom ea etc. games sucking and that continues to be a very good bet.

personally i hate all consolelikes on iOS. don't think the platform is well suited and i'm constantly amused by what people consider to be "amazing" graphics on some of these shit games

Is there a list of recommended iPhone games in this thread? Just got my phone and don't want to risk wasting money on crappy games. :lol
there are lots of smaller lists, just turn back page by page and you'll find them. Dont forget to stop when your wallet is empty.

Y'know, I was going to argue with you... But then I realized I believe that Infinity Blade and Rage are some of the best and most balanced games on the platform in terms of making proper use of the hardware, both in terms of input and in terms of graphics. And they are definitely a different breed from 'full featured' console games.

I also really love Nova 2 for example, but I must admit, I wish the devs DID focus on coming up with novel mechanics and control methods that make these games more immersive, instead of trying to shoehorn controller-like virtual controls into touch gaming (even when it works very well, it's not on par with what can be achieved with more out-of-the-box thinking).

I've heard good things about Infinity Blade but I just know it's not my thing at this point so I stay away. To put it more diplomatically, I think the consolelike genre on iOS at the moment is very poor. There are a few standouts it would seem, but almost every consolelike I've tried be it racing or FPS or sports I've found really underwhelming and I suspect that a lot of the unfortunate popularity is people wanting to replicate the console experience on iOS -- something I have zero interest in -- and being satisfied with simulacra.

I wouldn't say Infinity Blade tries to anything console-like. Actually it's a surprisingly good fit for the console, and that has led to much crying as there isn't free roaming or anything like that. Basically it's eye candy with solid fighting dynamics, which echo PunchOut.

That's cool; like I said I haven't played it only know about it from the impressions here. Got too many games going at the moment (carc, super golf, neuroshima, run like hell) to dive into something else but I'm sure I'll try it out one of these days.

U MAD, GAMELOFT?

Mobile gaming powerhouse Gameloft is not happy with Electronic Arts, criticizing the publisher for its holiday iOS sale, in which a huge amount of games were offered for a measly $0.99 apiece. According to Gameloft head Michael Guillemot, such a sale threatens innovation and makes it hard for smaller titles to compete.

"There is a high uncertainty for the future anytime somebody can steal the market at Christmas," he states, adding that it will lead to a "good enough" attitude where developers rush games out of the door for a quick 99 cents, rather than develop a better title that costs more money.

Ugh. They really are ruining the App Store with their cheap subpar clones.

Subpar to what though, 360/PS3 titles? At best there's usually 1 or 2 (if that) directly comparable iOS titles which you could potentially say (and possibly even be incorrect) they are subpar to. Things can only be subpar to competing products, which iOS is sorely lacking imo.

gameloft complaining to ea is pretty funny but i really find ea's pricing to make zero sense. if you ever pay more than .99 for an ea game you are a fool basically

gameloft will 99c their titles a good 6 months after release usually on a holiday period, what EA did was drop nearly all their heavy hitters to an instant 99c only 1-2 weeks after coming out for the christmas time, personally they could have just gone with a few dollars and still had good sales but being so cheap pushed them up the top chart, among other things.

The app store is a tough cookie to do well in if you don't have a popular name behind you, so many titles not in the top 200 are ever spoken about or bought because of it, what EA did was a little dirty but that's just how the app store roles, change prices any time and where.

But then there are companies like Firemint and the folks behind Carcassone who stand behind their unwavering price points and they do just fine.

If Gameloft is having trouble selling their knockoffs maybe they should reexamine their pricing model instead of blaming EA. There are always going to be 99 cent games to compete against.

Rats, never had this happen to me before though I've seen it reported but I got a bunch of achievements on Stick Golf yesterday I think when I was offline and they didn't register and since some are non-repeating I guess I'll never get them bummer.

Definitely tough to compete against the bigger companies that have big portfolios, big brands, and big discounts they can bring to the table. After doing a bunch of work to improve our positioning for Christmas, it was a bit disheartening to see the EA catalogue march past (heh, but at least all our unit sales went up a bunch anyway).

Looking forward to the day we have enough muscle to start gaming the whole App Store ;)

Goddamn Rage is such a good game. Playing on Hard or Nightmare (that shit is crazy) when you've gotten good at timing your reloads and dodges is amazing when there's a whole bunch of mutants attacking you at the same time. Awesome shit.

edit: and fuck it's so good to be able to play my own music to it, glad they put that in the last update

I noticed some of their new titles aren't ranking as high in the top 200, so I can see why he is crying. Shadow Guardian has dropped completely out. NOVA 2 and Dungeon Hunter 2 aren't exactly lighting it up either. Too bad for them I say.

A lot of the games they make like Shadow Guardian and NOVA are hardcore titles. That audience is large enough to get a good quality title to the top of the charts for a while, but it isn't large enough to keep it there.

They haven't dropped the prices on their recent releases either whereas EA will drop 'em to a buck after a couple of weeks. I know Gameloft gets a lot of hate, but some of their copycat stuff is pretty good. Modern Combat 2 is quality all around. Sure I wish it had Gamecenter for multiplayer- which I haven't touched yet (I have zero desire to sign up for extra online services for Gameloft and EA). Real Golf 2011 was OK, but on the flip side you have stuff like Let's Golf 2 and ...I dunno...whatever GTA ripoff they have which just aren't all that great. For the most part you can expect their games to be better than whatever Capcom, Konami, etc. to put out.

That said, I still prefer stuff from the smaller guys (Fruit Ninja, Flick Kick Football, Flick Golf, Crosswords, Mad Skills MX, etc.).

By the way, Mario. Not sure if you noticed, but in Flick Kick Football, when the ball hits the corner/side of the net (when it's a goal), the ball just goes right through it. I know that's minor but anyway to fix it?

I don't understand why on GAF piracy is bad and Gameloft is ok. yes, there's people working on the games, their business is legal, no law is broken on 'look and feel' yadda yadda. yet gameloft is clearly profiting on some one else's ideas, research, sales. their rip offs are there because something else came up with that game, the game had success and they're (to say the least) piggybacking it. how many good ideas did you manage to have today while coding your game? what will happen when gameloft will see it? will you get any profit? what will you say when gameloft will come out with 'shade of the giant statue', a heart wrenching tale of a boy fighting stone giants while riding a donkey to revive his mother? will it still be ok because team ico's not working on iphone?

these are not just clones, these are shameless rip offs. empty shells. the market sucks enough as it is even without these sharks.

Gameloft lol

EA should counter with the exact same PR, just say Gameloft is hurting the app store with its shameless cloning. They do make very slick, well-made clones, but those guys don't seem to have an original idea between them.

You know, there's actually nothing preventing the people gameloft is "copying" from releasing games on iOS... in a way it's their own loss.

The market allows things like gameloft to exist, nothing they're doing is illegal. You can't copyright the jump button or a style of gaming, yet, thank god.

Apparently the UNO game on sale for 99 cents right now and the Spider-man one that have gone on sale are among top-tier iOS stuff, Gameloft made or not. I've read good impressions in this thread from their other stuff too.

I'd be onyour side if Gameloft didn't make such damn good mobile games.

see, there are good professionals on gameloft that are quite capable of doing what they're told. too bad they're provided with a request 'do a GTA'. well, I can resist the urge to a mobile GTA, diablo, zelda or uncharted because I can play the originals and they're pretty good as well. can I download stuff from bittorrent because it's so damn good? in some countries it's not even against the law.

You just don't get it do you? Gameloft and piracy are two opposite sides of the coin. You're 100% wrong on this, sorry.
