You just don't get it do you? Gameloft and piracy are two opposite sides of the coin. You're 100% wrong on this, sorry.

not at all. in some countries both are legal and the effect is the same - the originator is not paid and the duplicator nets a gain with a lesser effort.

Uh, who gets paid from piracy? Downloading a game for free means no one gets money.

Well if its a website they gain money from ads often and if its someone selling it they do it for a price which nets them an profit.

You've got a point there but I'd imagine the majority of piracy doesn't lead to people getting paid. Kinda defeats the idea I think.

Either way I don't think his point is remotely valid, piracy the same as ripping off an idea.

And someone making a game in the vein of say Legend of Zelda isn't the same as someone making a game called "Rope Cut" that is exactly like another game in pretty much every way.

But... what is the difference between this and what happened in all the videogame industry?

Is really Galaga so different from Space Invaders? How many Bejeweled games are? Was not Final Fantasy I a clone of Dragon Quest? How many clones of Wolfenstein were? How many MMORPG are trying to mimic WoW?

Gameloft made a Diablo clone, for example. Ok. But there are dozens of Diablo clones, not in iOS (where Diablo don't compete), they are in PC. The world is full of clones of popular games that try to compete in the same platforms than the original games, with the same mechanics, with the same controls. What Gameloft is doing is a lack of originality, but very far from piracy and even less shameful than the clones that any big game has in his own platform.

By the way, Mario. Not sure if you noticed, but in Flick Kick Football, when the ball hits the corner/side of the net (when it's a goal), the ball just goes right through it. I know that's minor but anyway to fix it?

I'm pretty sure thats "on the list", but as you note it is pretty minor, and the guys have been focused on adding more content and functionality, as well as getting new products to market.

Flick Kick Football is our best selling product to date, so it will continue to get attention and tweaks/improvements though. I imagine that issue will get fixed eventually. I'm kind of hoping we round out the functionality around online multiplayer first though.

You're equating the effort of pirating game code with game lofts development team?

I get that they are not originating, and perhaps taking game premise, story, and game design, but they are actually making the product.

I tend to think they're bit more on the rip-ofF side/easy money vs. Homage/filling in a gap side, but they're nowhere near equating piracy. Come on.

and they are filling a gap, with the final product being passable.

The difference is that in the case of Gameloft, they actually went and wrote the code for a new, although very similar, game. Nobody can own an idea. In the case of piracy, they simply reproduce an exact copy. That is an infringement of copyright.

Exclusively on the Android Market...it's Rope Cut!

Dungeon Hunter is no more like Diablo, than Sacred is like Diablo.

Mondern Combat is no more like CoD, than Medal of Honour is like CoD.

Gangstar is no more like GTA, than Saints Row is like GTA.

The list goes on, they are all similar games, but they are taking the time to make new levels, cars, characters, classes, skills, stories, controls, etc.

Sacred, Medal of Honor, and Saints Row are all from different developers.

Dungeon Hunter, Modern Combat, and Gangstarr are all from Gameloft.

At this point, Gameloft just seems like they exist to rip shit off. That's what makes their stuff so distasteful to me.

Yeah this. I don't really support GL (I think I've only played one of their games), but what they do has been done plenty in gaming. And it's not equatable to like this Rope Cut thing. (Or even piracy for that matter, that 'comparison' makes no sense whatsoever)

Is that odd though? They have lots of employes and make mobile games. They can make a lot of them.

I get that but when you see a Soul Calibur clone, a Halo clone, a GTA clone, a Diablo clone, a Call of Duty clone, an Uncharted clone, a Final Fantasy 12 clone, a Guitar Hero clone, a Zelda clone, and a God of War clone being churned out one after another...it gets a little suspect.

As long as Gameloft games continue to be fun and quality products I will continue to buy them. Clearly console gaming companies aren't too concerned about it and if they release quality products I'll consider getting theirs instead. Right now though, GL gets the job done.

Am I the only one that's not butt hurt over gameloft? I certainly hope those who are so up in arms about gameloft's development strategy were taking to the streets with pitch forks in the name of EPL when Major League Soccer attempted to replicate the game of soccer by imposing overtime shootouts during the regular season when the league first began :lol

I'm not butthurt about gameloft. If they had any interesting games, I might take them more seriously, but right now most of their output seems to be watered down rip offs of console games, which I don't want to play on my iPhone. I'm looking for more original experiences, and things that are easy to play in a small amount of free time.

I certainly don't hold their "work ethic" against them, as a lot of developers have done this in the past and managed to improve on the original games. It's a good way to start up when you lack original ideas. Hopefully they'll come up with something original one day and then I might check it out.

Certainly. Ive only bought a few of their games anyways. If I am looking for something unique I know not to look their way. But the very presence of them on the app store doesn't offend me. At least some of the stuff they put out is of good quality.

The Spiderman game got incredible reviews, and all GAF impressions are positive, some people have said it was one of the better spiderman titles made, let alone on games on iOS.

The UNO game has ~12,500 ratings on iTunes and averages 4 stars, and I've read very good impressions on that one.

Not everything they do is crap or a rip off. The licensed stuff can be pretty good.

Edit: Let's Golf 2 also got pretty good impressions here.

I am working on an interview about flying Hamster for the iPhone. Does anyone here have any questions they'd like asked?

"Have you seen the trailer for Legend of Zeldaloft? Jesus Christ."

I am still loving Mad Skills Motocross. The physics engine is so subtle that certain shifts on the bike can get you a second or so. Pretty true to real life dirt bike racing.

I think they've been pretty upfront with their games. They approach their clones not from the "oh we have no original ideas" perspective, but rather the, "if they're not going to do it, we will" point of view. At least that's how I see it.

And they do have some "original" games in their lineup. Spider-man is pretty fun.

Yes, but they're so offensively repetitive about their plagarism. It's like their niche, they don't have anything else to fall back on. Picking on them is easy, they polish their games but otherwise it doesnt seem like they're trying.

I'm happy to see stuff like DMC 4 on the app store, but man... I didn't even like that game on consoles :l

I'd like to pimp Cause of Death and Papa Sangre. Someone here compared it to a text version of Heavy Rain, and they do share the split second decision making, gritty story, and character switching mechanics. Although it's nowhere near the at times harrowing experience of Heavy Rain, it's still engrossing, and since it's free, you don't have anything to lose really.

Papa Sangre is just plain cool, and something very unique on the app store, since it's a game that you play with your ears. The game uses holophonic sound files to create enemies that must be avoided and items that need to be picked up in order to advance. The technology is honestly very cool as the illusion of space and distance is pretty convincing, and makes the game unlike anything you're likely to have tried on any other platform.

Finally, I'm really annoyed that Super Bros. keep claiming that Sword and Sworcery is coming out "real soon" but it's 2011 already :l I feel like I've been reading about this game forever now :l

It looks fantastic....except the controls look kind of awkward. I'm just tired of virtual controllers I guess.

I can't believe people are even suggesting Gameloft is rpping companies/games off. Did anyone see what Capcom released on the 6th? I don't want to say the title because they don't deserve the exposure. It is terrible

I want legal action to be taken against that Rope Cut game because that IS illegal. They have taken the exact game and changed the ropes and the monster to chains and a snake. The style, the concept, the level layouts, the fact that the stages are presented in boxes, the level select screen having three gold stars near each stage, that is fucking disgraceful. That makes me so fucking angry, Goddamn. I'm pretty sure that if I took a Mario game and replaced the Mario sprite with one of my own and released it I'd get in some seriously hot shit from Nintendo and that is exactly what Rope Cut is doing.

While we're on the topic of shameless ripoffs I present to you:

MAXPLOSION!

Really Capcom? The art looks like it was drawn in Paint. A well-established company stealing from an indie developer.

Why do you hate openness?

Can someone verify something for me in Rage on a 3GS? If you play it in Museum Mode and you're using tilt controls with maximum sensitivity, does it jitter quite significantly when you just put the device down and it's not moving at all? (as if you'd be holding it and trembling)
(edit: sensitivity = high)
