The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |OT2| Part II

If I'd have to choose only one game to have on my device, I'd think it'd be Infinity Blade... I just don't seem to get bored of it, the difficulty keeps scaling nicely and the fighting mechanics feel like they would take forever to truly master perfectly, even though your timing and swiping skills keep evolving and you keep feeling more badass as you get a better grip on it and level up/get new gear. The game just remains immensely satisfying, leaving you with a 'YEEAAH!!' feeling at least once or twice in one run through the castle. And when you start to develop a fine feel for the timings and attacking etc, it just feels so intuitive and fun.

There are a few games I actually deleted despite of them being awesome in many regards.

Games that have not managed to keep my attention:
Osmos - beautiful, relaxing, varied... but somehow got boring to me quickly, I prefer Ozone, which feels like it could be a sequel or spin-off of sorts to it
Bit.Trip Beat - awesome concept, great visuals, great music... yet I felt more frustration than fun every time I played it, not because a particular thing bothered me (the controls work ok for me) but because there's something about the game's constant suspense, balanced with little sense of achievement that just didn't make it fulfilling enough for me to play
Zen Bound 2 - Starting to see a pattern here? I LOVE these more artistic and experimental games, but Zen Bound 2 is perhaps the best example of a gorgeous and unique game that just ended up losing my interest quickly. It's a shame cause it's artistically one of the best looking/sounding games on the App store and its gameplay is truly unique.
Samurai II - great game but I think it suffers from gameplay standards having gone up a lot this year on the platform, it would have been engaging a year ago but several other games have become just so innovative and fun that this one really feels like it's trying to shoehorn a superficial version of classical arcade fighting controls into a touch game
Asphalt 5 - Was on the edge of deleting it for a long time... NFS: Hot Pursuit came. Immediately removed it. Hot Pursuit really shows what kind of polish, focus and fluidity Asphalt should have. Perhaps Asphalt 6 did better, will check it out when it's on sale.
Seed 1 & 2 & Zenonia - Srsly, horrible framerates on simple low-res 2D games does not compute. Some may say I'm being a bit picky, but try playing a super-smooth framerate game like Soosiz, imagine Seed 2 running like that and you'll know what I mean.
Tilt To Live - Okay, this one will be controversial cause I know it's one of the most loved game on the App store. And I have to say, to start off with, I love how incredibly well executed everything in the game is and it's wonderfully stylized. Even so, its style is not my cup of tea and the incredibly excellent Geometry Wars port and the uniquely cyberpunky Circuit_Strike.One have me fully covered and intrigue me way more when it comes to these types of games.
Radio Flare REDUX - It looks like it could be the iPhone's REZ (in 2D). But the music is just 'okay' and something about the framerate and/or fluidity of the controls threw me off, I *really* wanted to like this one.
Reckless Racing - Beautiful game, quite a bit of fun. But its 'meh' hillbilly-style along with other awesome racing games (current favs: Speed Forge Extreme (still!) and NFS: Hot Pursuit) drawing my attention away from it made me remove it.
Rimelands - Glad I only got this one when it was on sale, its slightly-less than ideal framerate, 'last-gen' graphics and specific style of turn-based combat really turned me off, tried to like it, did not succeed.

Games I still keep coming back to after having had them for a long time:
Geometry Wars: Touch - Some complain about the controls, but to me these are the absolute best twin-stick controls on the platform. The game's beautiful graphics, excellent difficulty curve, engaging sound design and music and most of the time great framerate make it an awesome experience.
Knight's Rush - Gorgeous side-scrolling beat'em'up with RPG elements, similar to Wolfboy and Twin Blades but much better imo and it's really charming too.
Speed Forge Extreme - An actually decent Wipeout clone that feels like a solid budget PS2 title, not without its flaws but faaaar better than other contenders in the app store in all aspects.
Aqua Moto Racing 2 - Surprisingly fun physics, truly engaging jet ski racer, beautiful water animations. (framerate is not ideal but tends to jerk mostly at moments that don't seem to bother me)
Pix'n'Love Rush - don't think this needs any introduction, endless beautifully retro-styled varying platformer... or something, hard to describe :D
Robot Unicorn Attack - Open your eyes.
Ozone - The only truly immersive and artistically unique 'chill' game on the platform for me atm, wish there were more like it. Play this with headphones, it's lovely.
Circuit_Strike.One - OT: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=24800004
Rage HD - Not for everyone but definitely the best Time Crisis-like shooter on the App Store, fully in glorious 'id' style with amazing graphics. Especially with the new update, the game has really come into its own. Game center functionality makes it into the score-attack game it set out to be, Museum mode allows you to look at the levels and see just how capable the 3D engine really is and how detailed the huge amount of non-repeating texture data is.
Infinity Blade - This is the shit.
Nova 2 - Okay I haven't had this THAT long yet but I'm quite sure I'll be playing the friggin' excellent multiplayer probably until either Carmack comes out with a better online fps, until Gameloft releases Nova 3 or perhaps until Archetype 2 beats it.

I have had a couple of iPod Touches over the past two years, try to avoid using iTunes (Possibly the worst interface I have ever used - My Kryptonite) and have had a couple of reformats of my laptop in between. What is the best way to go about getting a full list of all my game purchases? Maybe even printing it. Please don't tell me the only way is by clicking over and over on that 'My Account - Purchases' in iTunes. :(

I just got a new 4G Touch and want to re-download a lot of my older apps I forgot I own. heh

Go back a few pages, I believe it was just some soundboard stuff or akin to that.

What? Where did anyone say that. I'm pretty sure it was an actual announcement for a spring release of Chrono Trigger on japanese mobile systems, but not iOS. I think, correct me if I'm wrong, the Secret of Mana game we got now was a port of a japanese mobile game. So there is a chance of it being ported in a similar fashion eventually.

Anyone still playing VectorRacing btw? They actually updated it to allow iPod music while playing (which was my main complaint with the game). If it has any longevity, I might grab the full version.

Butt Christmas was more than 15 days ago... wtf iTunes

"The twelve days in the song are the twelve days starting Christmas day, or in some traditions, the day after Christmas (December 26) (Boxing Day or St. Stephen's Day, as being the feast day of St. Stephen Protomartyr) to the day before Epiphany, or the Feast of the Epiphany (January 6, or the Twelfth Day)"

So, i'm considering buying an iPad purely for gaming. Has anyone else here done that? Any thoughts or regrets? I owned a second generation touch back when it came out in '08, but the small screen (and the control difficulties that are associated with that) hampered my enjoyment of the (at the time) relatively limited game selection.

Heads up: Rumours say Broken Sword 1 and Mirror's Edge will go free during the iTunes 12 Days of Christmas.
I've been planning to get ME too, hope it's true.

Your spelling of rumours tells me as a UKer, I can be excited about this right?

you can't re-download apps lol. you can rebuy them though

Uhm... No. 'Re-buying' = re-downloading, you're not re-buying anything, when you click the 'buy' button on an app you've already bought, it is just downloaded without payment (you'll even get a popup saying you already paid for it and the app will just be downloaded without charge)

I hope that turns out false. I've got Mirror's Edge and no interest in BS, which I've got on PC and Xbox already.

Where'd these rumours come from?

going through your purchase history manually is the only way.

Good luck.

Hmm, well the UK has already "missed" one of those games with a Father Ted episode, so could see the games replaced with brit-specific content, even if it's true. Who knows.
Broken Sword is a British game, so it could happen.

I just grabbed an iOS device, an iPod Touch 4G.

You can still download the free gifts from other countries if you search for them in the store.

That's weird. As far as I understand it, no game can change price while the store is shutdown till the 29th. If you set a price change during that period the game would be removed from the store until the 29th when the change would go into effect (brilliant move).

So I don't see how a game can go free before then.
Because this is an Apple-run promotion, they can change what they want.

Get Colorbind.

Just want to say that Top Gear stunt school is real good fun, it's made well and there's tons to do, really surprised with that one since most branded games turn out shit for £2.

Well worth buying if you want to make crazy cars and drive them on the top gear test track as well as launch them around and collect golden cogs for achievements :D

Hey guys,
my mom is looking for a iPad game like that on the screen. It's a match-3 like game and you have to get 3 or more marbles of the same color horizontal in the yellow marked area to disappear.

Is there a game like this on the iPad/iPhone?

There are tonnes of Bejeweled clones. It's overkill.

You can try Plock, Bejeweled or iJewels. To name a very, very few.

I already know I could re-download my already purchased apps...I was looking for a way to get a list of WHAT I had bought and owned over the past couple years so I could remember which I bought and could re-download. :lol

Damnit. :/

Pretty lame. That's one thing the Android Marketplace got right, once you log in on your phone it shows you a list of your purchased apps.

SIGH.

Thanks for confirming my worst fears though.

if you go to your account page in itunes, you will see a list of all your purchases.

note the ones you want to redownload.

one of my first and still favorite games is The Quest. You can cancel that entire list and just play The Quest for about a month straight.

Yeah, that I knew but I was looking for a more functional way of doing it rather than clicking through a few at a time. Being able to print a list or something would be nice. hehe.

Oh well.

I avoid iTunes whenever possible and thought there was maybe some tip from an expert user that I didn't know of to do so.

Nemesis: try Unify. It's a really great tetris variation, you match color blocks but they come from both sides of the screen.

If you like old Eye of the Beholder-type RPG games, Undercroft is a great throwback and free, too.

Viking Lords is all kinds of turn based strategy awesome.
Damn I'd check it out if it was iPhone-compatible. Didn't know it used the Commands & Colors system, which I'm a big fan of for light wargaming.

Just grabbed Monkey Island 2 for a buck. Hopefully the iPhone port is decent, but either way I couldn't pass up one of my favorite games for the price of a candy bar!
