sad if you ask me. time to get used to seeing apple associated with gaming. tens of millions of people on the ios platform is too hard to ignore for any game developer.

Hell yes. The fact that Angry Birds has sold 4+ million copies (based on my position on the leaderboards alone) shows that the platform is legit and there's plenty of money to be made.

Actually they broke over 12 million paid downloads on iOS last month

To be fair, there are some limitations with the interface, and, in the mind of traditional publishers, the limited range of pricepoints.

I don't begrudge hardcore gamers to be annoyed/fear a handheld future with no buttons. :lol

Played a bit (ok a lot) more of Jeff Minter's Minotaur Rescue this afternoon, I'm coming to the conclusion that it's actually a fantastic game. I take back my criticism from yesterday, the game seems to work fine with music/podcasts now, must have been my phone playing up. The controls now that I'm used to them are really intuitive and fun to use, the learning curve is probably only about 30 mins on them but when you start it makes almost no sense.

For those just joining us, it's an Asteroids clone but with a sun in the middle of the screen. Minotaurs are inside some asteroids, collecting them increases your shot speed and score. Everything is moving towards the centre of the screen due to the pull of the sun.

What is really great about the game is, like Space Giraffe, the risk/reward scoring structure. Playing with it this afternoon I realised that if you catch the minotaurs just before they fall into the sun you get a lot more points (thousands compared to hundreds catching them at the edge of the screen. This encourages you to play in the centre of the screen where the sun is constantly pulling you in.

Also, if you let too many rocks fall into the sun it seems to increase it's gravitational pull which becomes very dangerous on the later levels. It's one of those perfect score attack games where the very way you play determines your score. I got a higher score by level 7 playing agressively than I did by getting to level 9 playing conservatively.

The game becomes bastard-hard around level 7 or 8 though, actively trying to kill you. At this point you just have to desperately struggle to stay alive.

Highly recommend this game and at 59p it's a total steal.

So when are we getting Swords and Sworcery for iphone/ipad?

Also will it be an app that can be played on both machines? Or will we have to buy it twice (please not this!).
It's coming... lots of fixing and polish a work being done still.

It won't universal. Please don't hurt me.

Anyone have Perfect Cell? I know that it didn't get the best of reviews when it came out, but I just watched a video and it seemed cool.
I played it for the last few days and deleted it last night. It looks great, your character has great animation, but the controls are very finicky, and ultimately nothing about the game is fun at all, at least it wasn't up to where I stopped playing which I think was halfway though. Not a single puzzle to solve no interesting situations you find yourself in, nothing, and the controls sure don't help. Such a downer considering that I still play Edge.

there's room for both. i just don't understand how a board full of game geeks can get riled up over another platform to play games. that's what we all love here right? i love my 360/ps3/pc like the next guy but i also find my iOS devices on equal ground in regards to my gaming attention. no need to be scurred y'all.

Looks like I need to play some more because all I can think right now is 'are these controls deliberately obtuse?'. Seriously, it's fucking infuriating. I think it's a combination of the controls and the way that the ship wraps across the screen but I can't get on with it at all. Maybe I'll have more luck on the iPad.

I'll keep persevering, for Minter.

Can you play these games in a pass and play format:

Carcassonne
Neuroshima Hex
Catan
Uno

I want to play with my girlfriend and we only have one ipod touch.

Mario, I've asked you forever and ever.. make iPhone GripShift happen. Push it through! :p

Okay okay, maybe that's not realistic.

But GripShift 2 for XBLA/PSN/PSP is. :)

Yes for UNO as well, so that is a clean sweep, they all have it.

OK, regarding the controls of Minotaur Rescue, they actually work really well. I was trying to control the ship with my thumb held on the screen like a twin stick shooter or something. It's actually designed so you should be swiping the screen as if you're rolling a trackball, like you used to get in old arcades. Do some swiping, let inertia take care of the rest... make sure you're using bold, long swipes to make your ship move straighter against the gravity pull. It takes a little bit more getting used to because of the influence of gravity.

Has anyone play this game? Looks like an awesome game made for us! :D
It got very good reviews at SlideToPlay, want to try it out.

Had gift cards so picked up:

Street Fighter IV- very well done, was suprised it works on iphone, it is not perfect I owned the PS3 version but it's as well done on a phone as u can expect. A bit pricey though for a mobile game, should be $5.

Space Miner:Space ore bust- fun, addictive shooter with RPG elements. Well worth the price can see why Touch Arcade picked this 2010 Game of the Year. Hope they make a sequel.

It's pretty simple when you get used to it really - it's not a 'swipe in a circle' to turn thing, all you do is quickly swipe in the direction you want to turn in. For instance, if you want to turn so your ship is facing left, just swipe left. Because of your thumb it's sometimes hard to make a very specific move but after a while it becomes quite intuitive. And then to move you swipe in the direction and hold it - do it for just a sec and you'll coast nicely, hold it longer and you'll go fast. Eventually you'll be able to nip from one side to the other with startling accuracy.

Completely destroyed my previous high-score earlier, got to just over 600,000, very proud of myself. This is definitely my kind of game.

If you play The Creeps tower defense game, don't get the latest update - it wipes all your progress :(

Aw, seriously? I guess that's what happens when they use a cloud service that goes out of business on them. :(
