The iPhone 4 |OT|

Hmm, 3G data just went out. If I switch to Edge, it works fine, but on 3G, nothing loads. :\

Hope this is a tower problem and not a phone problem.

You guys should really get rid of the % reading and then just see if the phone is getting you through the day. The last phone had no % reading so y'all have nothing to compare against. Seems like it's just a lot of "well I gamed for 10 minutes and it dropped 5%, that just doesn't seem right". How do you know? Maybe that game does chew battery life.

I'm not saying this applies to everyone as some of you seem to possibly have a legit issue, but it seems the majority are reading way too much into that percentage figure that is displayed.

I get about 100+ hours with every possible thing enabled on the phone, minimal use, but even with fair usage, I doubt I'd hit under 50% a 10 hour work day.

Just since I posted that message mine dropped from 31% to 29%. :lol

Damn it, I lost another 2% of the battery in the last 12 minutes while doing, literally, nothing. Two e-mails came through but I looked at the on my PC. The screen was off the entire time. Yikes.

I sorta agree, but at the same time if I do have a battery issue, I would like to know sooner than later so I can swap it out. That's my only concern. It seemed great all weekend but I also used it heavily. Today was the first day that I was going to stop treating it as a new toy and just use it normally to see how the battery lasts. That's why the huge drop caught me off guard from just listening to a podcast.

Edit: Also should the iPhone 4 get warm from just playing a podcast? I always had my last phone in a case so this is the first time I'm using an iPhone without a case. It's not super hot like if you're using heavy internet usage, but it feels warmer than just being idle.

Hmm, how many apps were in your background queue?

Dude, my June 15th order still hasn't shipped. I bet you STILL get yours first.
Either you were going to get a special phone ahead of time or I traveled into the future to place an order on July 2nd.

So GAF, My phone has fallen victim to one of the many screen problems abound: a gray spot on the screen. Don't know what it is, couldn't be a pixel. But it's under the screen and annoying as hell now that I've noticed it. Hopefully I can swap it out, I don't mind waiting until whites show up until I do. But, fuck! I hope my next 4 doesn't have any screen issues.

Re: warm while playing podcasts: no case and I've been listening to them almost all day. Phone does not feel warm right now. That's not to say you have a problem though.

Didn't you also have a ton of credit issues?

Yea, up till Wednesday.I apparently have a phone reserved in the warehouse which is about an hour and a half away. All they have to do is put it in the box and give it to fedex.

It's been this way since I sorted it out on the above said date.

I've got 39. I've never really killed anything out of there since I got the phone.

I'm going to agree with you that Apple should have improved the implementation somewhat. Let's say you don't use an application for 6 hours. The OS should automatically dump the app. In tandem, there can be a menu in settings that would allow you to whitelist certain apps you always want available for multitasking.

I only got a couple paragraphs in but that review is in love with itself. And the phone.

The iPhone 4 has so many more pixels that I can't see them individually with the naked eye.... Then frustration and practicality set in. Why are there more pixels if I can't see more stuff on the screen?

you guys do realize that the way the multitasking is set up there's little need to force quit applications? there are few true background processes/APIs exposed, and for the most part you basically know which ones are open and in use (audio streams, GPS tracking, file upload/download). otherwise, an application supports 'multitasking' by saving its state to RAM, which prevents it from being a battery drain.

don't be fooled by the task switching bar - most of the icons listed are just a recently used list and have zero to do with true task switching.

That gizmodo review has to be one of the weirdest and most awful reviews I have ever read. Why the hell would you do a stream of conscious review for a phone?

I know that, but certain things are left on in order to support push related things am I right. If a user has 39 apps open, and each uses even 1-2 of those background API's, things will add up.

somehow doubt they just 'had a phone reserved'. I have a feeling they just said that for the sake of saying that.

The_Inquisitor said:

Just to clarify - There is no visual representation of a background queue in iOS4. Just a list of recents. It doesn't tell you anything about what's still running or being held in memory.

Well they have fed me same story since last Wednesday. I would hope something would have clicked. It's kind of pathetic I am not going to get my pre-order shipped before they release to the public tomorrow.

We understand. It's just that we're anal-retentive. It's akin to keeping your desktop free of icon clutter.

no one has 39 applications 'open'. period.

Haha holy shit that is me. I can't STAND it when there is shit on my desktop. Hell, in Windows 7, the only icons I have up are my computer & trash in the lower right hand corner. In OSX it's just my HDDs

These men can't be bought or bullied or reasoned with. Some men just want to watch battery life burn.

I read the review with an eyebrow half-cocked. I think to myself, has he written reviews before? Maybe. Maybe not. I'm confused. He seems to love his "boy". Does he really? I can't tell. My mind tries desperately to decipher his cryptic thoughts. He's losing me. My 3GS pings with a new text message. I'm too distracted by thoughts of an iPhone 4 to respond.

I finish the article. Where am I?

Isn't that what the home screens are for? It's like people want to use this as an extended dock or something, and I don't quite get it.

Wonder if someone can answer this. Part of the rumor mill for iOS4 was if you have made progress in a game/app on one iDevice and sync, that progress would be saved on the second iDevice.

Say from my iPad to my iPhone. Did that ever happen?

I feel the reviewer is trying too hard. I 'x' out the window and remember why I never read gizmodo in the first place. I continue to f5 my order status page in hopes my order will show shipped. Discouraged, I return to working. By working, I mean reading neoGAF.

Edit: Oh and my 2G touch absolutely bleeds battery life after iOS4 update. I don't know what the hell is going on.

then you'll love this - http://gizmodo.com/5511678/apple-ipad-review

reminds me of the crap i wrote in high school lit classes.

I was just about to post that shitty review. It's so similar in style I assumed it was the same dude, but it appears as though all Gizmodo writers review like pretentious assholes.

Not surprisingly, good ol' Brian Crecente writes in a similarly douchey way. Here's a quote of a recent interview:

"I'm sipping on water, gently crushing ice between my teeth, when Kotick ambles into the deli."

You're so fucking awesome, Crecente.

Wut? So they will be filling/taking orders that weren't part of the pre-order disaster now? What do they do with the guys that are 7/15?

Man at this point I don't care when they ship it as long as it's by 7/2. I almost don't want it for the holiday weekend as I am sure I will be putting the phone in peril.

That said I think now the home button on my 3G is fucked, it takes several attempts to get presses to register. :lol Cracked screen, fucked home button, impacted headphone jack, broken speaker. :|

I fixed problem Tuesday evening. I called at&t last Wednesday and the rep confirmed the phone was reserved in warehouse and ready for shipping. I called again today and the rep says my phone is still reserved waiting to be packed and given to FEDEX.

which has little to do with the number of icons are in the task switch interface. what matters more are the application/processes you've SET to run in the background. Pandora's multitasking will eat battery because you're using it to stream/decode audio, AroundMe's 'multitasking' won't since it's only saving its state in RAM and letting the OS manage the memory.

A-M-A-Z-I-N-G

I love this thing.
Were you using it at all during those five hours or is that just standby time? According to my time keeper, it's been use for 5 hours (mostly listening to podcasts) and I'm sitting at 78%.

For my own sanity I know. :lol :lol

I just think it's ridiculous that they aren't fulfilling their pre-orders first, that's all.
Well you had a problem up until Tuesday.

Preorders technically began on the Tuesday prior.

To expect yours to ship with those that originally were ordered a week prior shouldn't be guaranteed. A lot of people preordered after that initial date and have to wait.

What you are complaining about would be if someone were complaining to Apple for selling walk-in units to the general public last Thursday when people who preordered on the 20th won't receive them up until the 2nd of July.

Likewise you can't use the argument of "I DID ORDER ON THE 15th!" since you admitted here that you had some credit issue that caused a delay until you called them on Tuesday. You even said in a post last week that all it took was one call and you were set and you wish you knew earlier to alleviate the issue beforehand.

Sporadically.

I keep WiFi and Bluetooth on 24/7. I charged it to 100% at 9:30-10:00am. I surfed a few pages in my bed. I listened to music in my car over bluetooth for about 20 mins. I surfed a few more pages and checked facebook once. I also got 2 text messages.

Hold on buddy. I never said I expected to receive mine on 24th. I was only asking for it to be shipped by the 29th, as I was "promised" by multiple reps.

Second of all, the credit mistake wasn't my fault. The credit bureaus had my information wrong. I sorted this out as quickly as possible and gave at&t the information they needed. Again, I had no problem not getting it 24th. I would have hoped though my phone would ship after 4 business days counting tomorrow the 29th.

I don't see how the hell you think I am being unreasonable here. Just because something out of my control happened doesn't mean my pre-order should be pushed to late July.

Its not really about being OCD for me. There are different use cases for a recent used apps list and a currently running apps list and some people even like both. When I'm focused on a particular task that requires multiple apps I prefer access to a 'currently running' apps list. When I'm randomly opening new apps or hopping from app to app then a 'recently used' apps list is quite nice. If you forget why that location icon is the menu bar, or you're trying to make sure that Skype is still running in the background, then recently used apps list isn't as useful as a currently running apps list.

I've been meaning to ask: does Colloquy running in the background have a noticeable effect on battery life?

It isn't AT&T's fault for not knowing your credit bureau had screwed up information and that they should hold 'special quantities' for these types of situations...

I know its frustrating as I've been in that same boat.. and hell I wanted to CANCEL my preorder with AT&T last week and they wouldn't let me because of their archaic system.. (They dont cancel preorders lol) but at the same time you keep posting about how frustrated you are yet to ME it doesnt make sense given the circumstances you encountered. (Frustration in that you won't receive it before people waiting in a line tomorrow. Hence my analogy above in my first post. Its not like Apple customers who preordered on the 17th and are expecting July 2nd deliveries are gonna go up in arms at AT&T for offering walk-in customers the phone TOMORROW).

Hope you do get yours soon though. I'd bitch them out especially since they have given you that "Waiting for FedEx to receive it" story for the past 4 days.. which honestly is BS
