The iPhone 4 |OT|

Not open for further replies.
myWi is now out for iOS4 users.

specs look fantastic.

MyWi 4 New Features and Improvements:
⁃ Faster performance
⁃ Lower battery consumption
⁃ Choose the In Use Indicator that you want:
⁃ - - Status bar icon (no battery use)
⁃ - - Blue pulsing bar (10% - 15% more battery)
⁃ Adjust the transmit power (Between 30% and 100%)
⁃ See who is connected to your hotspot (IP addresses)
⁃ Choose from a list of subnets to dish out over DHCP
⁃ Battery consumption meter
⁃ USB Bridge mode. (Connect your laptop over USB to the phones 3G or WiFi connection!)

Original Features:
⁃ Create a WiFi Hotspot to connect multiple laptops or mobile devices to share your iPhone's internet connection
⁃ 40 bit and 104 bit WEP Security to prevent others from accessing your WiFi HotSpot
⁃ Ability to enable USB Tethering on your iPhone
⁃ Broadcasts the Network Name (SSID) - no need to fuss with creating an adhoc network on your laptop
⁃ Shows up and down bandwidth usage

$19.99. available only to jailbroken phones. available through Rockapp now; Cydia later.

considering the AT&T tethering data plan costs $20/month, the one-time cost is nothing. It looks like a great move for those who want to be able to share wifi with other devices (like your iPads or multiple laptops) at no additional charge beyond the cost of your current data plan.

new iPhone owners need to remain aware of their data usage, though. that 2GB cap could get hit pretty quickly. but having used MyWi in the past, I strongly recommend it. One of my "absolute must" apps.

/me is still glad I have an unlimited data plan.

It isn't AT&T's fault for not knowing your credit bureau had screwed up information and that they should hold 'special quantities' for these types of situations...

I know its frustrating as I've been in that same boat.. and hell I wanted to CANCEL my preorder with AT&T last week and they wouldn't let me because of their archaic system.. (They dont cancel preorders lol) but at the same time you keep posting about how frustrated you are yet to ME it doesnt make sense given the circumstances you encountered.

Hope you do get yours soon though. I'd bitch them out especially since they have given you that "Waiting for FedEx to receive it" story for the past 4 days.. which honestly is BS

No I completely agree with you that it was my fault. You are right there. It's as you said though, I have been fed the story that my phone is waiting for FEDEX to pick it up. I even explicitly asked the rep if it was actually on back-order and she told me no.\

If they just told me it was backordered I wouldn't care. But the fact they keep saying its not is what is pissing me off.

That Gizmodo review was useless.

Also, did he really complain that he couldn't scroll the screen with the black edges on either side of the screen, really?

Did they give you an order status number?

Did you do it on the website or over at the store..

You should have one either way and can check online using either wireless number or shipping zipcode

Maybe your tracking is there showing that fedex is actually waiting for its arrival. Mine did for 3 days before it finally arrived at UPS then shipped.

The only way I can check is through AT&t's premier order status site. It only tells me my order is "processing" with no other details. Trying to use my new phone number or anything else on the normal at&t tracking site gives me nothing.

The reps are the ones telling me my phone is reserved and waiting to be put in truck @ warehouse.

I know right. It also really bothers me that they only do this "review" style for Apple products as of late.

it's a must-have feature, IMO.

if you have devices you would like/need to be able to tether your phone to for internet access.

like I said, I've used it with my iPad (wifi-only version) on the street corner and just smiled. so easy and convenient. no need for the 3G iPad and its 1-month fees. no paying for the additional cost for an iPad 3G. no extra data plan cost.

yea...it's a must for me. but that's just me. I think anyone with an iPhone and a wifi iPad would be remiss not to buy this app.

I believe Gary Whitta has said that the space for the headphone jack on the bumper seems to only fit the Apple earphone jack (and earphones similar). So the workarounds are to precisely make the hole larger, or invest in this maybe:

Whoa, GBA SP flashback! Also, harm the bumper?! Blasphemy! Stupid antenna issue making me contemplate buying a case... For 2 years my 3G survived just fine in a pocket! The 4 couldn't last a week.

I have a pair of Sennheiser ear buds and they fit perfectly with the bumper but the jack on mine looks a little different from yours. My jack looks more like this one:

These are giant cans, PXC 450s. I'm on trains for 3+ hours a day and can't stand canalphones.

Rockin'. Looks like they did fast-app switching. Beejive already started up pretty fast but this cuts a few seconds offa that even. Noyce.

I know I got an update about a week or so ago for Beejive, was that when it started to start up fast? Basically, on my 3G, opening Beejive was painfully slow. I got an iPhone 4 and noticed an update and then it was blazing fast. I'm about to get this new update now, but I was curious was it just the 3G that made Beejive painful or was it corrected in an update more recently?

But will it be $10 for those who already own the older version? I just bought it a couple of months ago.

I'm waiting until 4.0.1 to jailbreak my phone anyway. But man do I miss SBSettings.

One interesting thing: I jailbroke my old 3G a long time ago and added the battery percentage indicator to the top bar with the extended settings app. Once 3.0 hit, I went back to non-jailbroken, but the percentage stayed, the only vestige of the jailbreak. When I restored my new iPhone 4 from the backup of the old one, the percentage indicator is still there even though I had it turned off in settings. That's one persistent little setting.

My 4 finally lost it's first full charge. Ended up with ~7h of usage and 41 h of standby time...pretty damn good.

I did the same with my 2G. It's a little weird, but I want the percentage showing anyway so it's no biggie.

you guys do realize that the way the multitasking is set up there's little need to force quit applications? there are few true background processes/APIs exposed, and for the most part you basically know which ones are open and in use (audio streams, GPS tracking, file upload/download). otherwise, an application supports 'multitasking' by saving its state to RAM, which prevents it from being a battery drain.

don't be fooled by the task switching bar - most of the icons listed are just a recently used list and have zero to do with true task switching.

I never thought otherwise, which is why I've never shut anything down out of the task list. I am still curious if my battery life is normal behavior though. Should standby and an hour of playing a podcast result in 11% battery usage? I thought it was 300 hours standby and 40 hours audio.

I'm not sure what the performance was on the 3G. It was always pretty fast on my old 3GS, and now all you have to do is waiting while it connects (just a second or three) if you've already opened it once recently-ish. That's pretty good.

My wife wants a car remote for her iPhone. I've been looking around online but can't find anything anywhere. She just wants to change songs without having to mess with the iPhone each time (so she doesn't get distracted and crash).

I've only been able to find a couple options, and they all include a dock that won't fit the new iPhone. This seems like something that should be available - a little remote that operates via bluetooth and attaches to the steering wheel or something, but I can't find anything simple like that.

Any help?

On my 3G, it would take like 30 seconds before you could interact with it once you launched it. Sometimes even longer. It was just painful to open it a lot of the time. Now it's practically instant even without the new update. So maybe it was the 3G all this time. It was borderline unusuable before because I hated opening it. I love it now though.

I would guess the key difference is that Apple probably turned on Airplane mode or something to reach those particular figures. Just having 3G enabled drains the battery quite a bit (I guess it's constantly pinging cell towers and such).

To give you some idea, I just played 2 rounds of Bruce Lee (less than 5 minutes) and the battery level dropped another 2%.

Edit: I just timed it and replicated it. I opened Bruce Lee at 9:49, played a few rounds, and closed it at 9:54. Another 2% gone.
I just played this game for 6 minutes (finally got home to try it).

Started at 92%, ended at 92% :(

Not a bad game! Actually pretty damn impressive visually, I just need to figure out the controls better. :lol

Anyone else gonna be lining up outside an AT&T store tomorrow morning? The store I'm going to opens at 7am (I think they all do, actually). I wonder if being there by 5:15am will be good enough to be at the front of the line. What do you guys think?

I'm doing so as well. Just to be sure, I'm driving by tonight just to see if anyone has lined up. But otherwise, my plan is to get up around 3:30 and get there around 4:30, maaaaybe 5. I think that'll be good enough.

Doing the same here. Hoping that's enough time.

A few websites have stated they have sources that the iPhone 4 will release in canada around july 23rd..
That's pretty much a month dammit. Germany and the UK got it before us? Fuck canada.

I'm looking for another budget set of earphones since the Apple ones are so sucktastic. The Skullcandy 50/50 have a fully functional mic (volume, pause, play, fwd, rwd). For $50 they look to be a good value. I notice that AT&T has the Skullcandy FMJ for $30, might look into those as well.

I've been getting paranoid about it and now I'm thinking of heading out at 4:30am (the store is like 10 minutes away). You know, just to be safe.

Check at midnight, definitely. If you go at 5:15 and they open at 7, I really, really doubt you'll be at the front of the line.
Hmm, you've got a point. Time to sacrifice some precious hours of sleep then.

By 5:15am there were well over 100 people. My dad got in line around 1am for walk-ins and he wound up waiting for over 15 hours to get the fucking thing.

I'm always surprised when people say they're going to the AT&T store rather than an Apple store. I find the latter to be so much more convenient, and the salespeople so much more knowledgeable. Once I finally got into the store on launch day (after 3 hours of waiting), I had mine and my wife's new phones activated and paid for in maybe 6 minutes. And I wish all stores would email my receipt. Fuck paper.

3 hours without preorder on launch day? Where was this at? My store had at least a 5 hour wait if you had already preordered with me waiting 11.5 hours overnight to being in a position of waiting 2.5 hours once it opened.

On ebay for $28, you can purchase 'lightly used' "Apple In-Ear Headphones with Remote and Mic", the in-ear buds.

I'm considering purchasing one too. doesn't look like fakes either.

Walked into AT&T with no line in front.

Guy said 'Hi, here for an iPhone 4?' I said 'Yep'.

I walked out the door with an EMAILED receipt 15 minutes later and a head full of answered questions.

It's a reflection of how the branch of any particular AT&T store is managed how well they can talk about an iPhone and help you.

Have you thought about the Sennheiser MM50 IP's? They have a functional mic and they are sennheiser so they also sound very good. They cost about the same as the skullcandys.

I'm going to sleep in a few minutes and then I'll get up and check at midnight. Another concern is that the store I'm going to is the closest one in a 10 mile radius and Miami's heavily populated. If no one is there at midnight I'll just stay in my car.

Just got back from Apple Store. I did a side by side with my 2G and 4. SOB. 4 is like mini HD

sigh. Like the phone just not att. Oh well will wait for new touch

Local AT&T store is awesome. I've been keeping in touch with one of the sales associates there, and she just called and told me that:

a) She's holding three units back for my family and I
b) I don't have to come in and wait in the morning
c) I can come whenever I want tomorrow to get them, WITHOUT having three separate people present.

Huzzah!

yes, it's $10 for existing MyWi owners to get.

$20 for new faces.

That gizmodo review has to be one of the weirdest and most awful reviews I have ever read. Why the hell would you do a stream of conscious review for a phone?

Since they know they really can't badmouth the phone ... they figure this will prevent most people from actually reading it.
