Yeah it does kind of. They'd need to make the home button that shape for sure though, that is if they are making it touch based. Not sure why the speaker would need to be longer though.

Honestly, I think all those sites are fairly interesting to read (on my iPad using Instapaper while drinking strong dark roast coffee). I just think it's fucking bizarre how they all crib Gruber's design (colophons!) and crusades ("Kara Swisher writes on some Internet website") while pimping the same apps Gruber pimps (The Incident, Tweetbot, The Last Rocket).

I think a bunch of them have podcasts on 5by5 too.
 
The home button on my iPhone 4 is a little dicey. It seems to have trouble with single- vs. double-tap. But it isn't 100% reproducible.

Does Apple replace/repair units for wonky home buttons? If so, what is the typical burden of proof? It's definitely in the "minor annoyance" category and not 100% consistent, so I wouldn't feel like pushing super-hard for service.

the metal casing, slightly larger screen have all been hinted at before.

the shape of that render does not match leaked chinese cases and I also think apple is moving away from the thick edges as per the ipad 1.

I suspect the iPhone 5 will have more in common with the iPod touch and ipad 2 (glued front surface to metal back. extremely thin edges)
 
So I rebooted my iPhone because it wouldn't download any apps and now it is stuck on the Apple screen. I've tried every form of reboot I can. The only option I know I have left is to enter recovery mode and restore the thing, but that will require I update to the newest version of iOS, which will mean my only option for jailbreak will be tethered. Any advice? Please?

Well, in the past I've had some abnormally long Apple logos of death, but I've learned that all of them eventually go way. The phone isn't really stuck but rather doing some fixings or whatevs.

My point is, if you haven't left it for half an hour, hell, a whole hour on the ALOD, give that a shot.

If nothing happens, yes I guess you should restore. Don't know about updating though, sometimes you don't need to update when you (or cydia) have saved the SHSH from a previous iOS version IIRC.

Thanks. I let it sit on the Apple screen for about two hours while I took a nap so I am definitely quite stuck. I don't have SHSH blobs saved because I've not had this phone jailbroken. I had my previous iPhone 4 jailbroken, prior to having it replaced by Apple.
 
Alright, Apple camp. After almost two years with Android devices, I'm thinking of coming back to the iPhone camp (I had a 3GS for eight months and thought it was fine). I think my wife would be happier in the walled garden, and if the Cupertino crew can sufficiently wow me with iPhone 5 specs here in a few weeks, I'll probably make the switch. However, I can only do this on one condition: iOS HAS to play nicer with Google's services than it did when I had my 3GS. What's the current state of things with iOS/Google integration?

-Can I search all of my archived emails from the iOS mail client?
-If I add a contact to my phone, will it instantly sync to my Google Contacts? Same thing with adding events to my Google Calendar?
-Right now I use Google Voice to handle all my texting, as well as for making my phone calls (not VoIP, obviously; just for caller ID purposes). Does all of this stuff work with iOS right now? (I know about the iOS Messenger thing and don't need to hear about it on this end of things.)

Losing Google Navigation and Google Music will suck, but they're sacrifices I can probably make. Any word on a free navigation program from Apple?

With the antenna on the outside now, it wouldn't matter.

I can see them doing it to bring it in line with the iPad, and also add a curve to the back to make it more comfortable to hold. That's really the only complaint about the iPhone 4's form-factor, as cool as it looks.

I hope they don't go with a curved back. I'm a big, big fan of straight edges and flat surfaces.

As for the Google email/calendar stuff, it depends on how you add the account. I believe you can do that if you set it up as an Exchange account instead of adding it through the default Gmail account thing (google has instructions on how to do this). I have mine set up this way and push/calendar syncing is instant and works great.

If you jailbreak, there are two extensions that let you use your GV number as the outgoing number for both calls and texts. The extensions are $3 a piece (for SMS and phone) and all outgoing calls will be routed through GV and will show up as your GV number on the receiving end (as will all texts). So, using the SMS extension, you can get unlimited texting through GV all right through the default SMS app.

You can, but you have to go to Gmail -> All Mail label and search there in the iPhone Mail.app.

The Google Voice app was approved. I use it for my business number, but not as the regular phone number.

That mockup is honestly dumb, as it assumes that the screen will be 3.7" on the account of just being taller. That is simply not going to happen. If they increase the screen size, it will have to be proportional..

It seems wider too.

I just can't see how can Apple enlarge the screen without revamping the whole iOS UI. At least the springboard? Hmmm... but I suppose they could easily just make the gaps between icons larger. Ok, scratch what I said, I'm convinced.
 
I'm thinking of doing an 'iPhone 5 Rumor Mill | Apples Grow On Trees and so does Stories' lead-up thread to the announcement of the event. What ya' think? So that people can keep talking iPhone 4 in here without the thread getting derailed by future talk, and so more people knows iPhone 5 is being discussed frequently.

I mean, we're getting closer to the launch. Probable announcement this month already, launch next month.

I just bought my fiance an iPhone and set it up for her. In doing so I just used my iTunes account instead of setting one up of her own. Is it possible for her to download the apps on her phone that I bought and use on my personal phone? I see how, but before I do anything like that I just want to make sure that's fine to do.

Yeah you can do that. Basically just like you having your own iPad/iPod Touch/iPhone all on same account.

If it does come out like that and the home button is gesture-based (hence the wideness) then I'll be really happy. 3.7 inches is perfect IMO.

What would we want a gesture based home button to actually do, anyways?

I'm pretty sure nobody wants the old style touch Blackberry nub thing that let you move around their grid of icons, and all signs at least from the developer features implies that Apple is more interested in using multi-finger gestures on the screen to do things like close and switch apps...and even that would feel out of place on a small screen. I just feel like the small form factor really gets in the way of doing anything more than two finger gestures on the screen (maybe three), and a touch sensitive bezel on the home button side seems pretty ripe for unintended interactions.

The iPad I could see gestures on the bezel having some potential, but they'd have to make all 4 edges touch sensitive to match the "any way you want to hold it" mantra.

I'm pretty sure Apple wants all the action on the screen to keep things simple. One button. One screen.

Apple has a problem with gestures on iOS devices - they can interfere on how the apps work. For example, multitouch gestures on the iPad are awesome, but they break Fruit Ninja, music apps, etc, forever.

A small touch area around the button could help fixing that. One finger swipe to switch between apps, 2 finger pinch to close them, etc. It would still be just a screen and a button. Just like Apple's trackpad is simply an awesome, full of win and gold, large button.

No question there are issues introduced by having global gestures in the mix. Heck, I've had these problems with Lion when it first came out because gestures were colliding with my defined BetterTouchTool configurations.

I just don't think there is enough real-estate to do any kind of meaningful gestures on the bezel with the iPhone. I could be wrong, but I see that causing me more frustration than benefit. I'm already very fluent in double tapping home to swap apps and tapping home to close them. These are really only "power user" features anyways (app switching, voice control, music controls on lock screen, etc). I'd bet more than half of the people using iOS devices don't even know that the home button does more than close applications.

For most people, these things don't even exist, and for people that know they exist, there are methods to do what we want fairly efficiently in the current system.

There would have to be a completely different reason to want to move in that direction (functionality we haven't seen before) to make the inclusion be worth it, I'd think.

Nope. Apple is just stealing features now from other platforms, there ain't no deeper meaning or special functionality to it. It's 'worth it' because it strikes an item of the checklist.
