That's by design. The iPhone buttons are awfully bad, they fail very often, to make you buy a new iPhone next year.

My iPhone lock button has died and now it's never locked, unless I leave it running without touching it for a couple mins. I do need a new iPhone.

iP4 is perfect for me when it comes to design and used materials, but I don't really like the lock button. It'd doesn't feel very solid in my model.
It was because the prior iPhones used a plastic button that would switch easily in your pocket, or worse, get filled with lint and loosened and stop working properly. This is a much bigger improvement than the previous ones.

9to5Mac had a bunch of software rumors recently, including the first screenshot which they say they got from an Apple employee (Tim Cook's leaking ship!)

Users, just like in the patent drawings above, will have a user interface that displays a list of everyone they are following and another list that shows everyone who is following them. For a location based service, it is critical for Apple to show the list of followers. To maintain user privacy, all follower requests will be placed into a “pending” process and each need to be individually approved. In addition, Apple is working on putting a clear “blocking” system into place. Users could block individual users of the Find my Friends service or even block follow requests altogether.

We already knew that iOS 5 would mimic some Google Android features. There’s the Android-like notification system and system-wide Nuance speech-to-text functionality, but now we’ve discovered that Apple’s yet to be announced voice Assistant will be activated in Google fashion. Above is Google’s promotional video for their voice-powered Google search App Store application for the iPhone.

As you can see in the video, all a user has to do is put the iPhone up to their face, start speaking, and Google search results will appear on screen within a few seconds. Apple is going to be providing the same convenience to their iOS 5 users for their system-wide Assistant feature. According to code strings we have found in the iOS 5 SDK, all a user will need to do is move their iPhone to their ear, speak, and the requested action will occur.

This is much quicker than Apple’s current Voice Control activation method. With Voice Control, users need to hold down their home button for a few seconds in order to activate. Assistant activation will not simply be activated via the iPhone’s proximity sensor sensing your ear, but will rely on the phone’s motion sensors as well for accuracy.

Google Latitude?

Voice search should have always been put it up to your ear and speak. Why wasn't it that from the start?

No you aren't the only one, it is perfect in size and weight and it's the most beautiful design i've ever seen for a tech gadget
I think it's the first iPhone to have the famous apple premium design the other two are so...normal
Agreed. When it's off, it just looks like this beautiful slab of black glass. I fucking love the design and feel of the iPhone 4. If there was a way to upgrade to a 5 or 6 but just take the guts and put them in the shell of the iPhone 4, I would. (Assuming they had drastically different designs that is)

I have another iPhone n00b question; sorry:

I just found AT&T doesn't supply (or doesn't even have) SIM unlock codes for the iPhone. I kinda assumed that they did, since they do for every other phone out there. Is there any way to get the code from Apple? I know I can unlock it with ultrasn0w, but the phone is for someone else, and I'd like for it to be update-able, hassle-free. Thanks.

Unfortunately, no. You can try and beg AppleCare for one since they're no longer ATT exclusive, but chances are slim. I haven't heard any reports of them doing it for US iPhones lately.

Ultrasnow can only unlock the 1.59 baseband, by the way. (iPhone 4). That was last seen firmware 4.0.2.

There is some thing out there called Gevey SIM or something that makes any SIM card work. It's hurting my Craigslist resale value of my factory unlocked iPhone...

Any idea what an unlocked iphone 4 will be after the release of the rumored iphone 5. I'm really hoping it's somewhere under $350.

Deutsche Telekom confirms iPhone 5 reservations

Some people really are going to reserve an iPhone 5 without seeing it 0_o. I'm waiting to see a confirmed list of carriers and if the CDMA and GSM versions will be combined into one model but I guess that isn't a concern in Germany.
I've been saying for a couple years now that Apple should simply have a hardware subscription plan, and release 2 iPhone revisions per year. The subscribers have to give the old handsets back to get new ones, and those old handsets can then be sold refurb by the vendor.

This is genius and I should be given money for it.

I will give you money. You sound confident and that's enough for me.

Was this taken by an iPhone 5?

iphone_5_test_photo.jpg

Pocketnow.com reports that it has discovered a new photo that may have been taken by an iPhone 5. According to the report, EXIF data indicates that the photo was taken by an iPhone 4, but the original image checked in at nearly 8 megapixels prior to cropping, higher than the iPhone 4's 5-megapixel resolution and in line with rumors for the iPhone 5.

This (very attractive) photo claims to have been taken by an iPhone 4, but the rest of its EXIF data tells a different story: although the image has been cropped to 2235x2291 (5.12 megapixels), the original picture was a much larger 3264x2448 -- or just shy of eight megapixels. What's more, the lens was recorded as a 4.3mm f/2.4, which is closer to that of a point-and-shoot than the iPhone 4's actual 3.85mm f/2.8.
Further fueling the rumor is the purported backstory on the image, which includes claims that the picture was taken by an Apple engineer eating lunch at work.

Claimed part leaks from the "iPhone 5" revealed a rear camera essentially identical to that from the iPhone 4, but these leaks appear to be from Apple's "N94" iPhone that seems to be the so-called "iPhone 4S" based on the iPhone 4 rather than a redesigned iPhone 5.

Update: The original image was posted on Flickr (now pulled) by an Apple software engineer working on Safari and WebKit for iOS.

Shit, I think that I have bad habit when it comes to multitasking. In xperia x8 (oh my god, what an awful phone) I used to kill every application once in a while because of slowdowns.

I think I'm kinda paranoid. After every action on 4, I double-click home button and kill all apps. I guess it isn't necessary, is it? I'm talking of course about battery drain and ram usage.

I know 2 people who do this. They still charge their iPhone/iPod every night though. So it kinda boggles the mind...

I only do this for apps that I know would stay open in the background. I even have it set up on my jailbroken phone so that apps that aren't currently running in the background have their icon dimmed in the multitasking bar.

How can I set that up on a jailbroken iPhone? Sounds useful :O

How do I cancel my iphone data plan and use the iphone as a text, phone, and wifi device?

I'm pretty sure iPhone requires a data plan. At least on AT&T it does. You could change your data plan to the lowest tiered data offering they have then turn data service off on the phone so you never go over the 200MB limit.

You used to be able to stick your sim in another phone, say you changed phones, then put it back in the iPhone or something.

I want 0 data.

AT&T has iPhone IMEI list. They will know you switched to an iPhone and put a data plan on your account if you don't have one. Can't do that phone switch "trick".

Is there a such thing as a good, solid, reliable off-brand sync cable? I bought an awful Asian import thing off of Amazon and it worked for a while but the problem with them is that over time they just fall apart at the connector. And they are also harder to connect to the iPhone itself.

So is there a good cheaper cable out there or should I flat out stick to the Apple brand?

The 30 pin -> usb? Id just stick to the Apple one, its $21 on the Apple store.

you could always check BB/FS for alternatives I guess.

I saw a lady doing this the other day while on the subway. She couldn't get her facebook to load, so she started killing apps.

We were in a tunnel.

Silly broad.

Of course the more things stored in RAM, the more the battery will drain. 3G has a waaaay greater impact on battery life and if you care about the longevity of your battery/daily charge, only use 3G when you need to. Just remember to keep the phone away from microphones.

Really? Those are designed to fail.

If you plug the iPhone in and navigate to it in Windows explorer you can pull off the JPGs that way.

Computer > iPhone Name > Internal Storage > DCIM > folder > pics

no way. I’ve sold LOCKED iPhones after one year and gotten over 500 for them. two years in a row

I hope to get around 500 for my 16 GB unlocked iPhone 4.

maybe you could get a 3GS for under 400...

Through Craigslist? iPhone4s are going for maybe $400 here, less for Verizon version on CL. eBay I haven't looked at recently for them but I doubt it's over $500. I sold mine (AT&T) in March for $475 on eBay. However, I always do "Buy it Now" for lower fees so I don't know exactly what someone would have paid for it. All mine were locked though.

edit: Wait you're in Canada aren't you? If so disregard me.

yeah, in canada and I sold the old ones on craigslist.

if the prices dropped this year for whatever reason it would be a bummer but I still expect to get close to 500. I’ll have to see how it all shakes out after the iPhone 5 (and whatever other phone Apple may launch that diminishes my resale value) launches

What are unlocked, unsubsidized prices for iPhones in Canada from the Apple Store?

I guess I should be a little more specific.
In America, how much should we expect to pay for an unlocked iPhone 4 when Apple puts out the iPhone5. From what I can tell Craigslist prices are already falling to 400 or lower.

550, 660 and 780 for the 3GS, and the 16 and 32 GB iPhone 4 respectively.

@ribbonlace, I was basing my response to you from my previous experience where iPhone prices stayed relatively high even after one year of use. it seems this year is a bit different so I guess you may get one cheaper. no one can give you a definite answer. just keep checking the prices on ebay and CL and see how they shift.

one last thing about this. I’m checking ebay in canada and I’m seeing prices of around 550 to 600 for used 16 GB iPhone 4 factory unlocked. locked phones seem to be 100 less. these are american and Canadian sellers

I expect that will drop a bit once the new phones get launched.

Gotta love Apple device resale. Brand new Bionic is already around that price (just a bit higher, compared to locked iPhone), though obviously the globalness of a GSM device help its price too.

Does anyone else not like using a case for their 4? A friend recently gave me one and I've been trying it out and it seems like my screen just gets more dust on it with the case on. I've seen in some cases people take out their phone from their case and their just be a ring of dirt on the iphone.

I don't know if it fits the thread, but as it's about iOS 4 I thought that I just go for it:

My mother has an iPhone 3G, iOS build 4.0.1. (8A306) and her phone is really slow. Of course slower than the iPhone 3GS or 4 in comparison, but also slower compared to itself when she bought it.

Is there any option or solution (update?) to make it at least a little bit more useable?

I was using the casemate one. I got 0 scratches when I had it but it kept getting dusty and the screen cover made it look greasier than the glass. My fiancé then bought me one of those fit leather pouches (fits iPhone 4 perfectly inside) and I took everything out. To this day, still 0 scratches but I am always very careful with it. I also use a microfiber 2 or 3 times a week, depending how greasy the screen looks. It feels great.

I've been using Wunderlist for the last few months as my to do and lists app, but even though at the beginning I didn't mind to cope with its bugs and crashes, I'm growing a bit tired to see the devs seem incapable of fixing them.

Can you guys suggest good apps to do lists?
I'm looking for something that:
1.- Let's me share lists with other people (so, for example, I can start the shopping list, share it with my girlfriend, and she can add/remove things from the list while it's shared).
2.- Nice "to do" management is a bonus but no required (I've been using Do It Tomorrow for the last few days and it's quite cool).
3.- Not willing to spend a huge amount on it.

Just wait for iOS5. Gonna have a cool to do list.

I can never use my phone without a case. It's hard to grip and uncomfortable. I'm so used to having a case and it feels 100000x better with one. Never going without. Plus it needs protection.
