God damn that's a lot of phones...

Apple confirms over 1.7 million iPhone 4's already sold within the first 3 days of launch, making it the most successful Apple product launch to date:

Apple today announced sales of over 1.7 million iPhone 4s through Saturday, covering just the first three days of sales.

Apple today announced that it has sold over 1.7 million of its iPhone 4 through Saturday, June 26, just three days after its launch on June 24. The new iPhone 4 features FaceTime, which makes video calling as easy as one tap, and Apple's new Retina display, the highest resolution display ever built into a phone, resulting in stunning text, images and video.

"This is the most successful product launch in Apple's history," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "Even so, we apologize to those customers who were turned away because we did not have enough supply."
Saturday marked the end of Apple's third fiscal quarter (and second calendar quarter), and thus sales from Sunday forward will be included in Apple's next fiscal quarter, due to end in late September.

For both the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G, Apple announced sales of over one million for their respective launch weekends. It took 74 days for the original iPhone to move one million units.

Apple continues to note that iPhone 4 will move beyond the initial launch countries of the United States, UK, France, Germany, and Japan into an additional 18 countries by the end of July: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

...shit man, those are the numbers after only being made available in 5 countries...granted they are most likely the biggest, but I'd expect China to bring in a pretty decent flood of new users too.

Is the brightness setting on the highest? That' always a battery killer for me. Try turning off GPS and bluetooth until you need them.

I keep my brightness below 50% (around 45 I'd guess) and it's 9:24am and I'm already down to 89%. So far I've not made it one full day without needing to charge. Yesterday it died and I had to charge it just to finish the day. I definitely expected better.

So did they announce what kind of freebies we'll be getting today?

I want reparations, dammit.

Just imagine how bad it'd be if you didn't have an iPhone 4!

Aside from your brightness, what are you generally doing with your phone that it's dying so fast on you?

I probably use like 10% battery every 50 minutes or so under heavy use (video streaming/gaming/GAFing), so I'd expect to get close to 8 hours of heavy use before my battery finally choked.

Haven't actually gotten this phone under 50% yet under my normal usage conditions.

Any word on whether Apple will have any new iphone 4's monday or tuesday morning?

I guess it depends where you're getting one from. I believe my friend ordered hers online, because she got it on the day before the stores sold them like I did, but she's supposedly going to exchange hers on Tuesday at an AT&T store because there's something wrong with her Micro SIM card.

So far today I've played about 15 minutes of Warships (some free Battleship clone) and sent two text messages. Nothing that should have killed 11% of my battery. And I've seen it under 20% every day since I bought it. Haha. At least twice it has completely died on me before I made it through the day, and I've also charged it in the car two days to avoid having that happen.

Apple is released the iSaw today to give users the options of removing any and all left hand interference.

And while I love the battery life and speed on the iPhone 4 I don't think you could get 8 hours of heavy usage from this. If you are using 3G or Edge I think 7 hours is a best case scenario. At least on my phone. 8+ is probably only possible if you are on wifi the entire time.

Yeah I agree...hmph...

Did you have an iPhone before this? If so, how does it seem to be comparing? Based on what you're saying, 11% of the battery for 15 minutes of a game sounds pretty off. I played Tiger Woods all night last night for probably over 2 hours straight and only saw my phone dip into the high 70's.

Unless that's the most insane battleship clone game ever pushing the phone to it's limits, I can't grasp what's going on there. :lol

You don't have some random background services being constantly in use or something do you? Like do you see the location services notification in the menu bar even though you're not running any GPS apps? Or have music playing in the background but the volume off so you can't hear it?

I'm grasping at straws here :lol

The numbers I'm quoting in this post was little to no internet usage, but I was connected to a WiFi network the whole time. You're probably right in that heavy 3G usage could bring it down faster.

Sounds like you got a lemon. Take it back as soon as they have stock, you could easily replicate it at a genius bar, by having them run the same game for 15 mins as well, and their iPhone will still be at like 100% while yours is at 89%.

Any game i've played on mine for an extended amount of time, Defense Chronicles, Sword & Poker, Plants vs Zombies, or Astro Ranch only eats about 2-3% per 15 mins, or under 10% per hour.

To give you some idea, I just played 2 rounds of Bruce Lee (less than 5 minutes) and the battery level dropped another 2%.

Edit: I just timed it and replicated it. I opened Bruce Lee at 9:49, played a few rounds, and closed it at 9:54. Another 2% gone.

I'm at 97% right now, which is about 3 hours off the charger.

All I've done is read a few e-mails and upload some pics to PhotoBucket...so that's mostly idle time. But in 3 hours doing minimal activities I'm only down 3%.

What's your idle time look like? Same crazy battery depletion or is it pretty good when you're idling?

It seems to do well enough when it is idle with the screen off.

Bruce Lee, Dragon Warrior?

I'm tempted to buy the game just to do a test on this. :lol I love SF4 for the iPhone, so it wouldn't be a waste of money if this is a decent fighter.

Yeah. It's pretty fun. It may still be on sale. I picked it up for 99 cents. Couldn't go wrong there. Looks like it's up to $1.99. Still pretty cheap.

So I wonder if Apple is going to address the proximity sensor issue? There seems to be quite a few people who have issues with it as well as I. It's really like I can't even slightly move the phone when it's at my ear or the screen comes on and I start accidentally pressing buttons.

Only thing I can think of again is brightness. But you said you had yours half way (or slightly under). Wish the brightness bar was a number out of 100, so you can get to more precise comparisons.

Did you disable auto-brightness? I've noticed it gets a lot brighter with that off, and I have mine on still, so perhaps that would explain it.

No, auto-brightness is on. Also, 4 minutes of Warship (really, it's entirely 2D, not impressive) and checking to see the price of Bruce Lee in the app store killed another 2%. My battery is just disappearing.

To answer another question, nothing is using locations services (the icon isn't there anyway). No music is playing in the background, and the phone is hardware muted.

Hmph...my work WiFi networks are being especially picking today. Can't seem to connect to either of them on my phone or iPad (maybe their finally onto me?!).

Sorry, dude. Can't test for ya at work :(

Supposedly the next round of phones should arrive tomorrow (6/29). I'm still waiting on my day-one preorder. They finally managed to charge my credit card over the weekend so I'm assuming my precious will come tomorrow.

This happened to me over the weekend. Let it die, charge it to 100%. I also turned off 3G, ran on edge for a few hours and the battery stopped going down as much. I turned 3G back on a few hours later and now I'm good to go.

But mine was doing same as yours. I could watch the percentages going down 1 every few minutes.

Like i said earlier, I went to bed with 100%, 8 hours later woke up to 78%. Its fine now though.

But I just let mine completely die last night and charged it over night to 100%. Now today it's 11am, I've only been up and going for 3 hours total, and I'm already down to 70%. At this rate it will die before I even finish work. :lol

AT&T Premier can seriously FUCK off. My order from the 15th is still fucking processing. I called again this morning, and I was told "iPhone pre-orders are being shipped from 24th through 28th"

I have this incredible feeling my iPhone doesn't ship today still. Such bullshit. They are going to publicly sell iPhones without obligating their pre-orders.

Turn off 3G for the day. See what happens.

That' pretty bad, Seth C. Do you have good reception where you are? Maybe your phone is stuck searching for signal. That drains the battery life a ton. You could always try putting yours into Airplane Mode to find the problem.

While I have seen my battery drain a bit more with usage than on my 3GS, my standby time appears to been just as good if not better. I always make sure to leave my phone in a place where I've got bars.

Have had good reception in both my apartment and work (NJ and NYC respectively). Took it off the charger at around 8:45 this morning. After some light gaming in the subway, an e-mail/twitter check and maybe 1 or 2 webpage accesses, I'm down to around 92%. Brightness is slightly below 50% and I have auto-brightness off.

Cause for concern? I cycled the battery once already.

So your phone's been on for roughly 3 hours doing that stuff? I'd say that's about right.

Subway was probably your biggest drain as I imagine the phone was constantly losing/gaining service or something like that in tunnels unless you explicitly turned off your radios.

Thanks.

Yeah, I figured re: the subway. It's too much of a pain to go in and turn all the radios off every time I go underground. Either way, good to hear.

Do you have your email set to push, and how often? I know that can also eat away at a battery pretty good.

I have it set to push. Wouldn't that be better than having it fetch regularly, though?

I just lost 1% sending three text messages. That's with my brightness adjusted down to about 35-40%. Not sure my eyes can handle going much lower. My battery is flying down today.

Seth C said:

Don't think so. My understanding is that with Push the client is constantly checking, but I could be way off-base.

I can't give exact percentages on my phone's battery life, but I charged it fully on Friday night around 9:30PM and with a strong reception and a strong wi-fi signal (the latter which I shut off because I wasn't home Saturday night), my phone ceased to function a some time after 3AM Sunday when I came home and collapsed into sleep. At some point, a friend asked me about its battery life. Might have been a little past midnight, and it was at about 20% and I was sending SMS messages A LOT that night. I would say that's fucking impressive in my eyes given how many times I used to have to charge my old BlackBerry.

Does auto-brightness have a significant effect on the power? I turned it off and set the brightness manually to about 50%.

I should test this out on a PATH train to NYC. Fucking feels like an eternity getting from Exchange Place in Jersey City to Christopher Street. :lol

Meh...I have my phone set to push and I don't really see any noticeable drain worth talking about from it.

Blacks were available at launch, and the rest of the colors are coming sometime in mid-July I believe.

Didnt you have identify theft issues which held your order until you went to an AT&T store which was after the 15th to verify yourself..

Somehow I think you SHOULDNT lump yourself into that 15th order date crowd..

I've used my 4 like I used by 2G and I've gotten immensely better battery life. Still on my first charge, charged it up to 100% out of box while syncing (it was at like 93% out of box :lol) on Saturday evening and it's been going strong since then. Just hit the 20% low battery warning. On my 2G, by the end of a day I would definitely have to charge the sucker or I'd be doomed for the next day. Current stats are 20% battery, 5h 35m of usage, 38 h standby.

Is anyone else having any issue with scrolling? I noticed a problem while surfing the Gaf webapp and thought it might just be that, but I've since noticed it in mail and others. When I swipe down or up a few times, the first couple of swipes will do what seems to me (compared to my old 3G) to be a little less inertia that they should, then suddenly a third or fourth swipe of the same pressure will go super fast and fly down the page.

Is this a publicized problem with 4.0?

I don't think it's a problem, it's actually a new feature I believe. I remember reading that the phone registers that when you're swiping that much, you're trying to get to something near the bottom of the list/post/etc. and thus it speeds up the scrolling to get there quicker.

I haven't seen this on my iPhone I don't think, but I see it on my iPad all the time. I kind of think of it like a feature, personally. :lol

Nothing gets me harder than flipping through a massive page and getting to the end faster than a virgin inside his girlfriend.

I believe Gary Whitta has said that the space for the headphone jack on the bumper seems to only fit the Apple earphone jack (and earphones similar). So the workarounds are to precisely make the hole larger, or invest in this maybe:

as others have said.. not a problem but a feature. for scrolling through long pages before it only scrolled at one speed and took FOREVER to scroll through a long page. now after a few flicks flicking the page flies through it. I personally love it.

If you don't want to fly through the page, scroll through it, don't flick through it.. if you do flick, only flick once or twice otherwise yeah, it will zoom through the whole thing. Like I said though, personally myself and a lot of others like it, because previously there was NO way to quickly scroll through long pages.

I have a pair of Sennheiser ear buds and they fit perfectly with the bumper but the jack on mine looks a little different from yours. My jack looks more like this one:
