Did you preorder from att? If so I would say just take a stab at it, worst thing would be they say no. That is if you have a store near you, I wouldn't waste too much time on a coin flip situation.

After being in South Africa for 2 days and having to use a crappy Nokia, I really miss the awesome Iphone UI.

Never realized how great it is compared to some of the competition :lol

I saw two of them on the Subway this morning, the two guys were literally sitting across from each other. Pretty nice looking screens.

built in GPS for me is a game changer. Well, half of one. The Places feature of iPhoto and OS4 would be the other half. For instance, now instead of searching for pics from the bar from a few months (or years) agoand just scrolling through pics, I can just go to Places, go to the bar, and see all the pics I've ever shot there. That's huge.

I just wish Apple would give us a way to do Faces on Windows.. I'll probably eventually get a Mac by next year.. but would REALLY like access to Faces now. :(

Google's Picasa has built-in face detection, have you tried that? Guess it wouldn't be ideal if you keep your photo archives on the iPhone, but if you move it all to the PC, then Picasa will be able to run through and intelligently tag all people.

As of now I don't geotag my collection of photos. Aperture really doesnt have a good way of syncing with Flickr.

Can anyone tell me if lightroom will sync with my flickr galleries should I add comments or geo-locating info to my pictures?
 
iphone geotags by default. not even sure if you can turn it off. geotagging is held in the exif data, so as long as whatever site/system/app you are using either doesn't destroy or perfectly copies over the exif data, geotags should remain intact.

thanks. I wasn't aware of this. Though in the focus of this thread I was referring to a compatible tool that coudl sync to the iphone (which for Windows doesn't exist).

Considering one of the biggest reasons I jumped on the quattro than just waiting it out like usual was the HD vid function so I wouldn't have to carry my Flip HD around anymore. Needless to say I've been really satisfied with the quality in comparison to the Flip. On top of that, the 4 takes decent pics while you're moving.

problem to the buttons is that it's all relative. to some people it might be intuitive to keep the high volume on the right side. others it might make more sense to keep it on the left side. you start forcing people to guess how the volume controls act and it's a bad interface design.

I mean you are complaining about the controls and they are staying the same. Now imagine if Apple changed them to what you are saying, only in the opposite way of what you're saying because other people find the other direction more intuitive.

I'll go one step further. I will go out to say it's the best pns camera and HD camcorder we own.... and that's taking into account the lack of zoom. The Rebel XT will still be used religiously, and I do plan on getting a good 3CCD 1080p24 camcorder. but yeah.. the days of Flip video and pns camera shooting are gone. the 4 makes them entirely irrelevant. if the 4 isn't good enough for what you need, then you are going to have to move to a DSLR or hd camcorder anyway.

I understand that side of the coin, but doesn't the current iPod Nano change its control wheel when you orientate it to the side? It would seem like a similar principle. I do see merit to both sides of the argument though. Although, heh would it be more confusing than how the home button functionality is starting to get? (Not that it's confusing to me, but having the home button growing in the number different behaviors in different scenarios is getting more complicated)

The only thing that's sorta getting to me is how Liu Kang and others seem stuck on this, what if you're moving, what if you're listening to music, what if you're doing none of the things that I specifically mentioned, etc in my original point. Clearly there are some who agree since people here and according to mrkgoo, he's seen others in favor of it. Like I said before, it's not that big of a deal and I was just curious if others felt that way.

no it doesn't. Apple is consistent in their hardware buttons not changing depending on orientation.

yeah but on an ipod wheel you're still moving in the same direction as normal orientation; it's either clockwise or counterclockwise. with two separate buttons, you are changing up/down with left/right and that's confusing as shit.

also, i just realized that you can use voice control while listening via headphones. haha, that explains the reasoning behind "what time is it" to the possible commands..

Wow. I don't think I would have gone that far as I think my Lumix is still a better PNS in regards to having proper zoom, better lens, etc. but I will agree with you that the 4 does give me less reasons to carry my Lumix around. The 4's auto focus and sensor are extremely impressive. I have a proper HD Sony Camcorder and a D70 as well, but the less I have to carry, the better.
 
not sure if it's mentioned, but i decry more the lack of icon rotation in the task switching dialog/media controls than the hardware buttons.

my problem with most mainstream pns cameras is that their zoom is minimal to being with, and their aperture is so low that any sort of telephoto pic you take is really going to be blurry or dark anyway. if I know I'm going to be in an environment either far away or in bad light I'll take my Rebel XT. If I'm not thinking that's going to be a concern and some of the shots I want are far away, 5MP is still large enough to take a good wide angle shot and crop the area you want for a 4x6 or so. myabe I'm being "a tad" drastic... but the small tradeoffs on the 4 are worth not having to carry around another device, that's all. If I do have to carry around another one, then it better be worth dragging out the Canon.

heh.. agreed. I know why they didn't do a landscape fast switcher (uniformity and all), but yeah, the could at least rotate the icons and labels. :P

Me too! When I first read the article I thought the pictures were arranged in descending order from best to worst. The shiny head (or sun?) does make a difference, and the rest of the review is well written and on point, so I'll take their word for it.

Well sue me. I happy enough with using a DS outdoors and my laptop screen is matte so it's better than most. Yes, LCDs are generally poor in sunlight and will never be as readable as e-ink, but is it too much to hope that Apple at least made their next gen phone better, in this respect, than the one I have?

Oh, thanks guys. I'm not even in the Top 5 posters (6th :p) in this thread, with only 23 (24) comments in 920+, but damn you chose to notice me so. Sure I mention my plans to purchase (or not) the iPhone--but many other posters do that too. I generally try to post interesting/obscure news that I come across and be helpful with comments when a Gaffer asks a question. It's not my fault that the problems with the iPhone 4 are dominating the headlines right. *shrug* I'll "stop trolling" 'your' thread and won't disturb your blissful new iPhone bubble. You can burst it all own your own; it only takes one prick to do so and, from where I'm writing, I can see two.

So right now I am split between buying a used (january 10') 3GS or a brand new iPhone 4 at the end of July. Though, would it be good of me, bringing it with me for holiday in Asia? We'll probably be at a lot of oceans, pools and around sand and grass - while eating at restaurents made og bambus etc. I imagine there would be a lot of chances to actually drop it by accident. Would you bring a 3GS or 4 with you to a country with 30-40 degress on holiday? (as well to a football pitch playing soccer every day). I'm thinking along the lines of which would have the strongest strength, including cover on top.

how long do you plan to keep this phone AFTER your holiday? more than one day? then get the iPhone 4.

AND, get some tough, full coverage case for it since you think it'll be roughed up on your trip.

It's at least as good, if not better than the 3GS in direct sunlight. You're wasting a lot of energy worrying about a non issue.

Your biggest issue will probably be sand. It's coarse and gets everywhere. If you simply try to rub sand off a device, it will likely scratch it. Be careful about possibly getting sand under a case.

well I'd hope so. I already bought the phone. I just haven't opened it (primarily because I'm working remotely and am away from the computer I do all of my syncing to).

I was simply going by the comments here. 2 or 3 of our regulars have clearly stated that they have phantom scratches on the glass. what do you make of that? or are we saying that because someone on the internet said it, it must be fantasy? :-)

indeed I have been. that was a commentary on objective truth and my findings on the resale market, not a commentary on my personal daily usage of my iPhones. people on Craigslist/eBay definitely pay more for "mint" used iPhones. during my iPhone experience, I've been pretty lazy. sometimes I'd put it in a holster, most of the time I'd just toss it in the pocket with the least stuff in it.

but now that I think about it...eBay/Craigslist folks maybe pay only $15-$20 over a phone with light scratches. so I guess I wouldn't actually recommend anyone pay a ton of money for a case unless they just really like its style, because paying more than $20-$30 seems to mean more investment than you'll get back. of course, if resale isn't your reason for buying a case, go crazy.

How long did it take for you guys to go from Prepared to Ship the phone to actually shipped. Hopefully it ships today, I want to fry my retinas. :(

Yes, I call that home. Just get the 4 with a case and screen protector if you're worried.

really? that's interesting. maybe medium brightness. it looks just fine. nothing like phones I used to own which weren't visible at all or my iPad which is almost impossible to see. I find my 3G is very easy to read. I purposely angle it to get sun to get max visibility out of it. I presumed the IPS on the new 4 wouldn't be as nice.

Bringing my Kodak 12MP C190 to SDCC, which took some great shots at a wedding I attended in April, but honestly debating using my iPhone 4 the whole way for photos and video. Heh.

My 16GB is on backorder too I believe via Premier. I just think the majority of phones are now shipping to Apple stores/pre-orders.
