I have a question for you guys.

I'm trying to set up my school e-mail on my phone so I can have both my gmail AND my school e-mail come through. The email is an @pop.belmont.com (belmont being the school) one, and our school's mail service is powered by Gmail. How do I go about setting the school one up? I don't think Google's help page is up to date. I know I hit "other" under mail in settings, but don't really know what to do from there.

I don't know if this would work for you but my schools email is also powered by google and I just forward it to my gmail account and apply a tag to it. That way I can see both at the same time or just look at the emails tagged from my school account.

Is the premium version of Instapaper really worth the $5? I like the free version a lot... is this the best offering in the vein of readers? The optimization for the display is very nice. How is loading graphical layouts on the pro version? As smooth as the free?

Yeah I upgraded and pretty much fell in love upon finding Georgia as an accessible typeface.

Edit: Does The New Yorker only update every once in a while, or am I failing to import articles from that source?

For you upgraders, did you stick to the unlimited data plan just to have it locked in? The girl at the Apple Store told me that if I switch out of that, it won't be available in the future.

I stuck with it. I plan on viewing a lot of retina burning youporn.

Still on the priority list a week later. Really hope it arrives this week as I've been without a working phone for a week now and it's killing me. Using Facebook to keep in touch just isn't enough. Plus, I'm heading out on vacation in a week.

Not sure if I should just go looking around for an iPhone but I figure they're still sold out everywhere.

Mama didn't raise a fool, I kept mine. An extra $5 a month is worth it to not have to worry about how much data I'm using.

This might be old news, but I've done a little customisation, let's see if you notice it :)

Yea someone posted an article on how to do those glyphs's and signs earlier. Pretty cool, but a little cluttering and busy. I prefer the folders with just type.

Bastards

I do like them though...they seem to jazz things up. Not too much though, just enough

I imagine one day I will tire of seeing highly detailed 960 x 640 iPhone screenshots. But today is not that day. The detail in the grabs strikes me every time.

HOLY SHIT -- you have 283 emails!

What are the letters on her right hand fingers? I hope it's "FUCK" or "SUCK"

Hey guys,

I am looking to upgrade to iPhone 4 from my current 3G. I think the reception issues will be on the bottom of my concern list. But the fact I have dropped my 3G quite a few times is worrying me a bit. Just a few questions I have that no one can answer in a timely fashion on the Apple Forum:

1. How protective is that "bumper" case, and do they sell them at AT&T stores?
2. When teh hell can I get it in white? I have wanted a white one since I saw it. Wont buy black.
3. Will it work in a surround sound system ipod dock that my 3g worked in? or have you NO idea? :-P

Please help a fellow iphoner out!! :D

Or maybe 283...

EDIT: Damn ninja edit!

Yeah man, busy guy too lazy to read emails (alas most are from work)

But yeah sorry, the screenshot came out larger than I expect.

I don't know what it says on her fist, she is my favourite Suicide GIrl though (her name is Knizty)

Please, someone tell me why the iPhone bumper is so damn fugly (why white, why not black!?)

I love the fact that one of the main appeals of the phone is it's sleek design and looks, yet a select but considerable minority (ie left handed people, or people who answer the phone using their left hand like me) can't use it without a fucking fugly as hell bumper.

/sigh

/really wants an iPhone 4 now.

Has anyone tried the Pulse app? Is it worth the $3.00?

Having all your news in one spot would be nice.

What about the Tom Tom app? I've been managing with Google Maps but it's a huge pain in the ass.

Can't speak to pulse, but Reeder seems to be the RSS app of choice these days.

TomTom app is faaaantastic, and they just recently updated it with iOS4 support for fast app switching and location services backgrounding.

Google search built in.
Optional traffic feature (that really works from what I've seen).
Much smoother animation than stand alone devices.
IQ routes for the best routes at that time of day.
Ability to navigate to your contacts if you have addresses stored.
Able to avoid specific roads at your command.
Very nice lane guidance on highways for exits.

The only gripe I have with it is that it has a hard time keeping locked on when you're in a city with tall skyscrapers, and every now and then when you're driving it'll randomly place you 5 miles ahead of where you actually are for 1 second then drop you back.

It's had at least 2 free map updates since I bought it when they first released it as well.

Also check out the Navigon GPS app if you want to see a very solid competitor (from what I hear).

Apple confirms iPhone 4 reception problems stem from a software issue, fix coming

Letter from Apple Regarding iPhone 4

Dear iPhone 4 Users,

The iPhone 4 has been the most successful product launch in Apple's history. It has been judged by reviewers around the world to be the best smartphone ever, and users have told us that they love it. So we were surprised when we read reports of reception problems, and we immediately began investigating them. Here is what we have learned.

To start with, gripping almost any mobile phone in certain ways will reduce its reception by 1 or more bars. This is true of iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, as well as many Droid, Nokia and RIM phones. But some users have reported that iPhone 4 can drop 4 or 5 bars when tightly held in a way which covers the black strip in the lower left corner of the metal band. This is a far bigger drop than normal, and as a result some have accused the iPhone 4 of having a faulty antenna design.

At the same time, we continue to read articles and receive hundreds of emails from users saying that iPhone 4 reception is better than the iPhone 3GS. They are delighted. This matches our own experience and testing. What can explain all of this?

We have discovered the cause of this dramatic drop in bars, and it is both simple and surprising.

Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong. Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we sometimes display 4 bars when we should be displaying as few as 2 bars. Users observing a drop of several bars when they grip their iPhone in a certain way are most likely in an area with very weak signal strength, but they don't know it because we are erroneously displaying 4 or 5 bars. Their big drop in bars is because their high bars were never real in the first place.

To fix this, we are adopting AT&T's recently recommended formula for calculating how many bars to display for a given signal strength. The real signal strength remains the same, but the iPhone's bars will report it far more accurately, providing users a much better indication of the reception they will get in a given area. We are also making bars 1, 2 and 3 a bit taller so they will be easier to see.

We will issue a free software update within a few weeks that incorporates the corrected formula. Since this mistake has been present since the original iPhone, this software update will also be available for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.

We have gone back to our labs and retested everything, and the results are the same- the iPhone 4's wireless performance is the best we have ever shipped. For the vast majority of users who have not been troubled by this issue, this software update will only make your bars more accurate. For those who have had concerns, we apologize for any anxiety we may have caused.

As a reminder, if you are not fully satisfied, you can return your undamaged iPhone to any Apple Retail Store or the online Apple Store within 30 days of purchase for a full refund.

We hope you love the iPhone 4 as much as we do.

Thank you for your patience and support.

Apple

Sigh at the inconsistency in the last two posts
Did you read the first one? They both say the same thing. The second simply has a segment from the first. :lol Basically this: There is no reception issue, the phone was just reporting the amount of signal bars wrong, they are fixing it.

is what I was reading
That was just Engadget's terrible headline. Read the letter.

Well if you bold the next five words in the first sentence...

Well they only supplement the notion that there is a problem with the phone.

Second headline is very vague, problem could be anything based upon those words. (software/hardware undefined)

For GPS, I can't recommend MotionX Drive enough. It's 99¢ and includes voice guided navigation and traffic for 30 days for free. After those 30 days you have the option of buying either a month of service for $3 or a year's worth of service for $25. If you choose to buy no service you still get turn by turn nav, just no voice guidance or live traffic. For me the month to month option is incredible as I don't do a ton of traveling outside of the southeastern portion of the state which I already know like the back of my hand.. yet if I find myself unfamiliar with an area or am going somewhere else, for $3 I can get full voice nav and then use it for the next 30 days.

Downside is that it's network based. I mean how many places in the US have NO mobile connectivity? Yet, if you are worried about that, you can "pre-drive" the route to cache the tiles. If you choose not to pre-cache the route you will still get voice guidance and on-screen indicators, but no map tiles.

Navigon and TomTom are both worth it, first for being entirely storage based and also for being able to be paid for once and to never worry about them again. But, if you really don't see yourself needing a navigator more than a handful of times in a year, MotionX Drive gets the job done perfectly and ends up coming in at a substantially lower price than either of those two.

Navigon also offers a cheaper alternative for the US called MyRegion. It breaks the US into three regions (East, Central, West) and charges $30 for that region. It then allows you to purchase the other two regions of the US for $15 in-app purchases. Still not as cheap as MotionX to drive with, but you still get all of the benefits of a storage based GPS without quite as much as the cost.

When Google Navigation came out for Android 2.0, it was pretty frustrating as an iPhone user when your only alternatives were basically TomTom or Navigon at close to $100 each.... Now I am finding much less envy over Google Navigation thanks to the decent amount of GPS options out there for iPhone covering really all price points and feature groups. Still wouldn't mind google coming to iOS.. but in lieu of that you are definitely not without options on this phone.

I bought reeder. It's very nice. You basically just log into google reader and add your feeds. Reeder then syncs them. I have mine set to delete feeds every 24 hours, and only keep stuff for a day also.

Whats the difference between the 99 cent version and the 2.99 version

Ooooohh. Well it's kind of weird that the app store would not automatically filter out iPad apps on my iPhone. I was thinking of getting Tom Tom app, but it's getting slammed in the reviews.

Is there a mobile version of that site, or any other streaming pr0n? I'm curious if my retinas will burn red from the screen-concentrated diseases. PM welcome. =)

I bought TomTom as a quicker, no-frills GPS for my 3G. It ran better on my aging phone and was really just like a regular TomTom unit if you've used one (I was used to its menu system).

At the same time, a friend bought Navigon AND TomTom. We tested a few routes and when they differed, we liked what TomTom came up with better, but since then, his Navigon has received more frequent, better (free) updates, and it absolutely looks better for you graphics whores. It's the Genesis to TomTom's SMS. The computer voice on the Navigon sounded marginally nicer and more natural too.

UK-GAF,

I'm planning on ordering an iPhone 4 from the UK Apple Store, being factory unlocked and all. Any international mail forwarding services recommendations?

I called ATT/Apple today about signal issues on my phone. I regularly get 1 to 2 bars and yesterday while food shopping it dropped two calls to my girlfriend and displayed 1 bar. My sister with her 3G had full bars and I had to call my girlfriend on her phone. I told this story to the Apple rep and basically he told me this long story that ended with I should buy a bumper. What the fuck?

Edit: Right handed btw
