UK-GAF,

I'm planning on ordering an iPhone 4 from the UK Apple Store, being factory unlocked and all. Any international mail forwarding services recommendations?
I would be interested in something like this. But I feel like Canada and Hong Kong will have cheaper factory unlocked iPhones, based on past pricing (though they have yet to launch in those places).

So I've finally figured out what my battery issue is with my phone. If you didn't know this is my second iPhone 4 since Apple was kind enough to replace it due to me thinking my battery was faulty. At my desk my 3G service appears to be really hit or miss. I think my phone is just working way too hard to try to connect to 3G and draining my batter. Last night when I was out I used my phone heavily over the course of 3 hours and I didnt even drop a full 10% in that time. Today at work I decided to turn off 3g as a test and I've gone down 1% in 2 hours. I need to get WiFi at my desk, stat!

Has anyone used Pulse for the iphone? I'v tried a couple of other rss readers and wasn't a fan but it seems like pulse could be right up my alley.

Reeder is a million times more useful, but whatever floats that boat!

I know it's probably been stated before but I'm gonna ask again anyway. Can someone breakdown the benefits of Instapaper?
Let's you mark pages from your Mac or pc for offline viewing on your iphone

It's a free web thing. Why not just use it and find out for yourself?

Well, I know there's a free and paid version of the app. Just wanted to get some kinda idea on why people use it, how they use it and why they like it before I invest time in it.

I'm working, I check Twitter for a few minutes. Someone's shared up a super interesting article about Lady Gaga's butt. I don't time to read that now - I'm at work! So I hit "Read Later", then curl up later with my iPad to read it, and other articles I've found.

Not rocket science dude :P

How is it Kindle, Stanza and iBooks all don't have an auto-advance feature for reading? It's the way to go! uBook beats them all.

You just set your reading speed (words per minute), and it advances line by line, one at a time over the existing lines (without scrolling, so no headaches). It's the most ingenious way to read on a device since you never need to push anything except to pause/stop.

I mean who wants to have to tap their screen 20,000 times to read a book?

Jesus, that sounds like the most horrible feature ever. :( I never want any program to advance text for me unless I tell it too.

Figured you guys might want some of my ringtones (if you don't already have them) so here they are.

All are iPhone compatible, it includes

CTU Ringtone
Megaman 3 Intro
Saria's Song
Virgil's sound (from Halo ODST)
and the famous MGS Codec

Nice idea. I'll upload some when I get back home. Off the top of my head that's not on the list that I have... Guile Theme, Crash Man, and Mega Man Boss Music intro.

1. How protective is that "bumper" case, and do they sell them at AT&T stores?
2. When teh hell can I get it in white? I have wanted a white one since I saw it. Wont buy black.
3. Will it work in a surround sound system ipod dock that my 3g worked in? or have you NO idea? :-P

anyone?

Bought one yesterday. As stated previously, it's a shitload sturdier than I thought. It's solid glossy plastic with the rubber edges gripping around the phone. It will keep the surface of your phone off a surface.

Drop wise, it depends. If your phone falls on an edge, it's got a good chance. If it hits on the screen or back, aka a sharp edge you're still fucked. But if it falls flat, I think it would survive a small drop.

Why is it that when the phone first hit, there were tons of videos of people doing shatter tests with it, and now that we have the bumpers, there are no videos of shatter tests with the bumpers on? Of course the damn thing will break when you drop it naked, it's two sheets of glass. How about you do something relevant and drop it when it's wrapped in a rubber band meant to keep it from breaking to see if it really works?

Edit: Those are ringtones, ie, sound files. They'll work on ANY iPhone.

The only thing I've seen about this is Stephen Fry's review where he mentioned a friend at Apple who joyfully threw his bumpered phone at a wall.

I don't see any reason to believe the bumper wouldn't protect the phone except if you drop it on the edge of a sidewalk or something where a sharp edge would hit the glass. Even then, it's not like old iPhone 3G cases protected against that either.

Tilt scrolling on Instapaper is so fluid. Needs to be implemented in a plethora of software..

I purchased Instapaper yesterday and the tilt scrolling feature is seriously awesome. Makes it much easier to read long articles and focus on the text when you're not constantly scrolling and have your finger in the way etc.

Much like Tweetie's "pull down to refresh" it's something I want every app to have now.

It's actually incredible, best way to read digitally, I've done the single page turning and still do from time to time, but any prolonged period of reading I do is with the auto-advancing feature. It only advances a line at a time, replacing the oldest line on the screen, top to bottom. So each line gets replaced in order, so you basically set it to advance at a pace that is the speed you read, so you never have to move a finger to read.

You have to fall pretty far behind for it to clear out lines you haven't read, if there are 15 lines on the screen at once, it's probably like 20-30 seconds a full screen at my pace, and you can just tap the screen to pause it.

Wanted to watch the Uruguay-Ghana match (incredible) but couldn't because of the obnoxious restrictions for ESPN3. So, I just called up my wife at home, started Facetime, and asked her to turn on the TV and face the camera towards it. Was able to watch the last 80 or so minutes (most of 2nd half plus OT plus PKs) with very clear reception and sound. No hitches of any kind. I even had a crew of 5 or so people watching over my shoulder for the PKs. Suddenly they weren't so interested in talking about the reception issues. ; )

Yeah, I'm loving this thing more and more.

Great site for creating ringtones. You just upload any mp3 and can then work from the browser to create your ringtone. You can save these songs to the site, too.

That's awesome. Can't wait for the white one to come out so I can get it for my wife and see my kids more often during the day.

I recorded a short, 20 second clip in HD. If I send to YouTube will it upload in full HD or should I wait to get home? I thought I read somewhere that it sends up a sub-HD file if you send directly from the iPhone.

Apparently for best results, you should just copy the video file to your computer and upload to YouTube from there. I've also heard that for better video quality and less compression compared to YT, Vimeo is the way to go.

You are correct. When you click upload to YouTube it compresses it on the fly. When I did mine I just copied it over via iPhoto and then uploaded it directly.

That's what I used, but I think it's only for windows.

Not sure if I need an entire program or just the right folder/file setup. I have windows 7 and I already have some ring tones my wife bought. I made some (.mp3 format right?) but I can't figure out where to put them for iTunes to find them. I right clicked on the existing files and they don't show a "locate on disk" option. That is how I figure out where to put everything else so far.

Also quick: why does iTunes split some of my albums that my zune software sees fine into a few different covers but they are all tracks from the same album? Is there some software to correct this headache?

What don't you understand?

You can cache articles and web pages from an iPhone/iPad/Mac/PC and then read them at your leisure on an iPhone/iPad/Mac/PC.

I'm fairly certain my battery is borked. Its duration was nothing to write home about when I picked it up last week, but it was a definite improvement over my 3G's shitty battery life. Now, however, it depletes at a rate of about 1% a minute with any kind of use.

Should I try and return it to the Apple store? Or will they just laugh me out of the place?

Exactly how many apps do you have running in the background (i.e. multitasking)? :lol

Seriously though, I wouldn't hesitate to go meet with an Apple Genius.

Only two things at a time can truly run in the background anyway, and that's if you're playing music and having a GPS app track you at the same time, a rare situation.

The iPhone will keep everything it can stored into memory for fast app switching. This uses 0 battery power.

Yeah, I think I'll try that, thanks.

I understand it now. I was just being factitious with that last post.

Heh we need a ringtone thread. Its so damn hard to find a decent tone that doesn't piss you off when someone calls :P

I just take my favorite mp3s, chop 'em up in Audacity, export them, convert them to .m4a format in iTunes, then change the extensions to .m4r and put them back into iTunes. Works like a charm.

Anyone have a setting for handbrake that works on the xbox360 and iphone4 for video? Goddamn that would make my day.
