well, it is an option if you spend 700 bucks buying the phone unlocked. :P

hmm... not much of an option, obviously.

No its not. ATT still makes you pay for the data, you can't turn it off. Why not offer a subsidized iPhone 4 maybe t aery upgrade price.

The point is why don't carriers let you turn data off. Stupid.

wait... unless it's somehow different in the US compared to Canada you should now be able to walk into an Apple store, buy an unlocked iphone with no contract, pop in any SIM card and you're good to go.

no need to sign a contract at all. Apple started this option last week in the States.

Right, welcome to the USA. We like contracts, some of us have family contracts and plans. Its how it goes. Pay as you go is NOT big here at all. So for instance my mom had an old iPod touch and really wants the new iPhone 4. We are on an ATT family plan.

It would be way cheaper if she could just get the new iPhone but not pay for data. She doesn't have much of a need for 3G and the 15 dollars a month plan is useless. She just wants the wifi features and to not be stuck with the shitty devices that are not smart phones as well as not wanting to carry a new iPod touch and phone. One device makes it easy.

I just don't get why carriers mandate plans on smart phones. You should just be able to turn off 3G if you like.

AT&T has a running scan on the phones connected to their network and if it discovers you're using an iPhone it'll automatically add a data plan to your bill. Repeated calls to customer service claimed there was nothing they could do about it.

I think that might have only been for AT&T branded/locked smartphones though. I'm not sure how it'd treat the new unlocked ones.

It's technically required for all smartphones. However, I think they scan by their IMEI database so it may not know about the unlocked ones if it really does look that way.

Same. ATT does not offer turning off any services. You can only turn off talk if you have paper that shows you are deaf. You can opt out of text, but its a hassle to block incoming ones.

Hell I would LOVE to turn off talk time. I used 36 minutes last month. Or if I could get an individual plan for 100 minuets.

Hey all, I need some help. My dad just came to me with a problem with his iPhone 4. I don't own one so I could really use some help on this. When he's on the phone with people, they can hear him but he can't hear them. He tested it out with my brother and it sounds like the earpiece speaker is busted. Speaker phone works! Are there any settings or tricks that can be done with fix this? Maybe it's common and all it needs is a reboot? I'm really not sure but it seems like he's going to have to get it repaired right? Any advice would help. I'm on my way to work right now so I'll have to try any suggestions later.

Thanks a lot guys,

Tashi <3

Time to go to the applestore. Don't forget to set up a genius bar appointment. You can do that online. Back it up first.

I think tomorrow marks the 1 year anniversary of this...and I bought 2 day one. You think I should go buy the Apple Care for $60/phone just to be safe for 1 more year?

Turned phone on today and.. what the fuck

I've scoured the net, didnt find an easy way to fix this. Anyone?

That's how I use my 3GS. I bought it off of eBay for $300 used and have been using it for phone + WiFi for close to a year and a half now.

What I meant to say is why keep it going on until you check it. When you get a text message, at least it's only once and then it goes off. I don't need my devices to keep insisting me on keep checking on them. Honestly, it's annoying when it's next to you at night and it keeps giving the notification light (again, this is based on my prior experience with that Nokia model).

Someone could put the phone on T-Mobile and pay $30-40 a month for a ton of minutes and unlimited text. ATT is the only big GSM carrier here that requires a data plan.

Ugh, I was hoping it wouldn't come to this. All right, thanks!

My friend had the same exact issue with her speaker.. bring it to the apple store and they will most likely swap it out for a new phone free of charge. make sure he backs up his phone before he does.

Is this shit for real? it's blowing my mind!

Canada has its problems with mobile carriers but I've heard of nothing this insidious.

Not just iPhone. Practically anything they recognize as a smartphone gets a data plan.

The funny thing is, the iPhone ushered in that sophisticated system. They never used to have that before.

And we can also tether/hotspot for free! (provided the data plan is above 1GB, which is a sensible requirement)

The rise of Canadian cellular mobility!
lul more like the rest of the world is getting dragged down to our standards

So, I just got off the phone with a Verizon customer service rep. Asked her if I could go ahead and renew my current plan for another two years. Before I could finish she asked me if this was in response to the pending tiered data plan announcement. She told me not to worry. All customers on their current plans will be grandfathered in and it will never change as long as you don't change it. My next question was what will happen when my current contract runs out. She said they still had customers on digital sharing plans back from the '90s. She did her best to assure me that as long as I didn't change anything I will not be put into a tiered plan. But, companies like Verizon have a way of getting their money, one way or another.

Apparently 3% of tmobile customers use unlocked iPhones. That equals about 1 mil. subscribers. That's pretty impress for an unofficially supported phone that need some work to get to work with the network, even then it only works with edge.

Nah, it'll just work the same way that ATT does it. You can upgrade your phone, but if you want to change anything about your plan (minutes, text, add a line, anything) you'll be forced off of your unlimited data.

Copernicus said:
ATT only started doing that last year.

No, they didn't. Please inform yourself.

edit: well, they only started automagically adding a data plan last year, but have been scanning and sending text messages to people for awhile longer

Wow so it turns out my dad's phone had some sort of gunk in the headphone jack that was causing the iPhone to think a set of headphones was plugged in. That's why no sound was coming out of the ear piece. How weird.

I am going to get my first smart phone but the problem is that I have Verizon and I want to get the unlimited plan before I no longer can (which gives me a deadline of July 7).

I am trying to decide between the iPhone and Droid. The two biggest things for me in a smart phone is the ability to take a good picture (and upload it to Facebook, photobucket, etc.) and the ability to play music on it.

Don't care too much about games, but it is a nice addition (and I like to web browse, but it won't be the main thing I do with the smart phone).

Anyway, people have told me that Verizon doesn't have good service with their iPhones right now. I was waiting for an iPhone 5 but because of the Verizon tiered plans, I won't have the ability to wait for it and get the unlimited plan.

Another reason I like the iPhone is because of iTunes and I'm not sure if the Droid (or an Android phone in general) has a similar (in quality) system.

I figured I would ask this in here because I'm leaning toward the iPhone, but I wanted to ask what people thought here as well as do more research before I make a definitive decision.

Yeah, I'm talking about forcing the data plans. All carriers know what device you have because your device tells them.

iOS 5 has an accessibility option to have the camera LED flash for notifications.

Been using it, kinda startling since I'm not used to it yet. I always think, wtf! oh right my phone. Its very bright and alarming, they need a front facing more subtle one to make it affective, and less of an accessibility option.

I've always used Verizon, so I can't make a comparison to other providers. But, I can say my experience with them has been pretty good. No, you won't be able to surf the web and talk at the same time. But, I rarely experience a dropped call. Everyone I know that uses AT&T has told me dropped calls are common. Also, Speedtest.net did study on which provider had the best bandwidth. AT&T had considerably better bandwidth than Verizon. Streaming videos and information over AT&T's network was better. But, again, it suffered from disconnections. Verizon didn't suffer one disconnection in their study. So, you can choose throughput or stability.

My phone is always facing up when I lay it down. So, I'm not sure that would really work for me. :/

My random guess is they add a flash to the front camera that can have that function. Maybe with a LED that was designed for a dual purpose so its not as bright.

SUre, definitely possible. It's a neat feature. Half the time I can't see it because my phone is right side up. So when it goes off I am always caught off guard.

Luckily ATT randomly bumped me to upgradable for Sept 23rd. Even though I bought my first iPhone 4 on launch day. Mint.

You can always spot the people who are in the first year of their 2 year contract. Always the first people who claim (hope) the next iPhone will only be an incremental upgrade.

I don't get why anyone would want that. It's such a selfish "but then what I have will look old" attitude.

When I bought the 4, I bought it because it's fucking awesome, and it'll still be fucking awesome no matter what the 5 is like.

I hope its not. Even before I saw my upgrade was in Sept instead of next June I was hooding out for something great. I would just sell my iPhone 4 and buy the new one. Then do the same next year when I can upgrade and basically get a new one free.

Anyone who has had to exchange an iPhone at an Apple store, do you wipe it out before you hit the store? I remember wiping an iPad took forever and I just wanna make sure that none of my personal data is floating out there when I exchange it.

No, they wipe it in front of you when you exchange it. Had me hit the reset and erase all contents and settings on my iPad 2 when it was swapped.

They wipe the data. I wasn't expecting an exchange the two times I've been swapped, so I didn't format my phones.

Cool thanks. I gotta swap this before my year of Apple Care ends tomorrow. Home button has been flaky.

Had two iphones that decided to act funny on me so the Apple store basically swapped them out without any question as they couldn't figure out what was wrong. All they did was transfer my information to the new phone and wiped my old one before they gave me my new phone.

Despite being able to upgrade since March, though my actual contract would end next month, still holding off on getting a 4 as September's not too far off. My 3GS is still going strong despite suffering through the fact that 32GBs is not enough for me.

So my girlfriend gave her friend her iPhone today and he jailbreaked it without her knowing it. She's technologicaly (lol) retarded and I don't want her to mess up her phone. We're both in a plan together too by the way. Is there a simple way to un-jailbreak it?

Can't this person just fight the urge to touch the Cydia icon and then download tons of random crap from it until something bricks the phone??
