Ok, wait, anyone with an iphone, I got a question.

So I can basically have free texting with Google Voice, yes?

If I turned receiving text messages on my phone off, they would still go to my google voice, right?

And then I could just go to the Google Voice app on my iphone and send and receive from there.

Would I have to use an actual Google Voice phone number, or would my iphone number linked to my Google Voice account be ok? Because I read in one place that if you have a text sent to your Verizon number (presumably AT&T too) that it will count towards your text charge regardless if you turn off receiving them to your phone.

I don't actually own an iphone, but I'm trying to see if there is some way I can get out of having to pay 20 dollars a month for an unlimited texting plan. The only downside I can see to this is that it would be inconvenient to open the app all the time, and notifications might not be instantaneous. And I don't know how much data it would use, but that might be an issue too.
You would have to tell people your GV number. Texts sent to your carrier number will count just like they always would.

american's like cheap shit. and android is cheap shit in these parts. you guy must not have a wal-mart over there?

can we make a differentiation between software and hardware side please?

just because a phone is running android, doesn't equate to 'shit'

Android is free to run on any mobile device. Its essentially free. Android OS actually saved companies like Motorola and HTC from going downhill like what you're currently witnessing with Nokia.

Go to the AT&T/Verizon websites and tell me if it's really true that most Android phones cost the same as the iPhone.

Haven't there also been like free and .01 promotions as well?

Now THAT'S some bullshit.

The poster I was referring to was trying to tell people what they should or shouldn't care about...

Yes, I certainly may argue with someone over a point if I disagree with it, but I don't just go around trying to dictate to people what they are allowed to care about, or what they are allowed to comment on. It's interesting that you came along to support him in his quest to censor discussion about business news or comments about business matters though. I guess there's a white knight for everybody, and you guys are certainly entitled to your opinion.

I've had a bad impression of you since you entered a thread recently (one I sadly can't remember the title of) and went absolutely mental. You seem to do it a lot. It all seems very personal with you.

MacRumours have posted a story pertaining to an October 1 release date of the phone, though they clarified that it could possibly just be a placeholder date. Either way, hurry the fuck up Apple!

Charles Arthur of The Guardian wrote on Tuesday that anonymous carrier sources have told him that boxes encasing the next iPhone have been transported to carriers for testing. He characterized this as an "important step" in the release cycle for the next-generation handset.

Based on the timing of this, Arthur agrees with analyst Mike Abramsky of RBC Capital Markets, and sees Apple launching its next iPhone in September rather than October.

I'll only believe the good rumors from now on. :|

No wonder Pristine_Condition was nearly banned from the Android thread. Glad I can take refuge from him over there, at least.

But the Nexus S isn't "cheap shit", it's a powerful phone going for a great price...shame on them.
It's year old hardware. Comparing the two is like comparing it to something like the 3GS. Anyway, iPhone 4 models are on sale at Radio Shack, too. I definitely think the cheap Android phones make a big difference in marketshare. Not a huge deal, though, since the cream of the crop steers the boat.

What? The iPhone4 is even older.

The Nexus S is Galaxy S hardware. Old. Anyway, we're getting away from the point.

Yeah. Wow, I'm such a rabble-rouser. I've been on GAF for like 5 1/2 years and been banned once. :rolleyes

It's hard to believe in today's world a phone that is only a year old is considered old and outdated.

not to mention it still does whatever a phone should plus a whole lot more while still sitting best in class.

Absolutely. I just got an iPhone 4 instead of waiting for the 5. It's an incredible phone now and still will be when the 5 comes out.

By whom though? Does anybody that actually owns an iPhone 4 consider it old or outdated?

I wouldn't swap mine for anything else on the market today even if you paid me. Hell, unless the iPhone 5 is physically identical I won't be swapping it for that either.

Huge picture but that looks nice, though not very radical.

Question. Are widgets in ios able to be appended to a homescreen, or is it only installable view through the notification dropdown? Apple looks to have solved most of the issues I had with the OS and if the rumors are true, the phone itself.

Only thing left for me to heavily consider jumping ship is:

Stock turn by turn navigation with latitude support (we actually use it at our job)

Voice control for messaging, calling (numbers not in your contacts), and navigation

Widgets as a default view

widgets are notification center only. and, so far, there’s no 3rd party widgets. just weather and stocks.

I wonder how the cases will be like if the screen is actually stretched to the sides. Most (all?) cases for the 3GS and 4 I've seen overlap a bit on the front.

I updated to the new bullshit firmware recently and my battery life has been AWFUL since. I swear they fucked something up. I can't go through a full 9 hour day now without being at or near 10%.

I am at 30% after listening to 1 album and fairly minimal app usage and it was at 100% less than 6 hours ago.

BGR.com has some apparent "spy shots" of the new iPhone taken from a test unit being used by a French carrier.
The "spy shots" are from the MacRumors forums and it seems to be a photoshopped fake.

Perhaps they'll "clip" onto the top/bottom.

Do the White iphone 4's still have reception problems? Or did they fox those?

What problem? According to Apple there isn't one. Really though, the answer is no. The antenna problem still exists, which is probably why the next iPhone will be redesigned again.

That looks pretty legit. Looks like there will be a slight taper on the edges now. What's surprising is that the screen doesn't look any bigger, at least juding by the earpiece and home button area which look to be the same as on current iphones.

Those iPhone 5 concept pics look just like the iPhone 4. 0.o What am I missing?

I'll be keeping my iPhone 4 well into 2012. Until the iPhone runs on 4G LTE, but has the battery longevity that the iP4 currently as, or better.

Iphone 5 with 4G, longer battery life and a faster processor are obvious additions that should not need anymore speculations at this point in time.

I doubt we'll be seeing 4G in the next iteration of the iPhone. On top of that, the thought of 4G, a faster processor and longer battery life even with more battery intensive features seems a bit hopeful.

4G won't be until 2012 yea.

What I'm waiting for is NFC. All the operators and banks have already agreed on the technology here in Denmark and only phones with a NFC chip will be sold here, starting fall 2011 - so I'm hoping for NFC in iPhone 6.

And that iPhone 5 picture is fake, I think they stated that on the MacRumors forums, which is the original source.

Man, I'd love NFC on my phone. I already don't cary any cash, if I could skip out on cards and just take my phone, keys and i.d. out with me every day I'd be ecstatic.

If the 5 runs on 4G then great. But, I don't see it happening. Maybe the 5+.

The current model should have had 4G but it doesn't, their going to make the Apple fans wait two years for a 4G model? Also other phones have 4G standard.

Other smart-phones have dual-core processors in them already which is faster than the current Iphone model. An increase processor speed is obvious.

Each iteration of Iphone add more battery life.

Anyone else only using their iphone 4 purely for calls, messaging and photos after getting an ipad? It's kind of a waste lol...

You think it's going to have LTE? How many different chipsets are they going to have for the phone? LTE is supposed to be widely isolated based on carrier (BS if you ask me), plus Verizon is the only one with a decent footprint. Or are you just thinking HSPA+, in which case they would have to market the Verizon model differently as it would not have "4G".

I'd love for it to be LTE compatible, that would put it on my list of phone choices; I just don't see it happening.

Also, how long did it take for them to add 3G? (they were very LTTP)

But, the iPhone had a real problem with battery life until 4 came out, didn't it? More processing power and faster carrier wave eats up a battery big time. But, hey, if the iPhone 5 has duel core (I believe it's all but confirmed they're going to be using the A5 chip) and have the the battery life of the iPhone 4, and run on 4G, then that'll be awesome. It could happen.

I can't see Apple adding 4G until At&t gets its LTE act together, I think Apple would rather make people wait another year then release a product without enough 4g coverage.

As for the processor, of course that's going to happen and I wouldn't be surprised if that's the only thing that gets changed internally.

When it comes to battery life, I can't remember but did all the previous phones really increase the battery life?

Exactly. I don't carry any cash anywhere at all either, just having my creditcards, with no money on em' actually. But just being able to transfer from my account to my card through my bank (can already do that) and then use the very same phone to pay with, would be fantastic. I have been thinking of installing a NFC lock to my main door at the apartment, so I can use my iPhone as the key through NFC, but it would be a much better solution having it build into the phone.

I would think it's going to have HSPA+, and then add LTE next year. With such a late launch, however, (if it's October, not September), LTE might be barely possible.
