Does anyone else not check their e-mail on their iPhone or is it just me?

I initially set up my two bellsouth accounts to work on my iPhone but it began to be annoying when I realized that e-mails I read and deleted on my iPhone would still show up on my desktop's mail application.

I just check 'em at home these days.
settings -> mail -> accounts -> turn "archive messages" off

now when an email is deleted from your phone, it deletes it from your account and not just the phone.

Something I noticed and thought was neat.

One of the New York Times China correspondents taking news video footage with his iPhone:

While not iPhone 4, my latest gen iPod touch, 4.3.5 seems to be draining my battery. It was probably at about 70-80% when I went to bed last night. I usually put it on a timer and listen to a podcast when I go to sleep. I woke up and I got the 20% remaining battery. Happened twice since I just updated. My sister has the same one and said the same thing. She thought her battery was going dead since it drained so quickly. I figured it had to be the firmware since I just updated.

I'm the complete opposite.

I check like 90% of my email through the iPhone

Just checked me and my GF's upgrade eligibility today and was surprised that my 4 is eligible for upgrade a month sooner than my GF's 3GS, which was purchased 7 months earlier.

Did AT&T change their upgrade policy? If so, it might explain why they're projecting massive sales for the 5.

Last year they bumped up upgrade dates for 3GS owners so they would be able to get an iPhone4. Probably did something similar for people who purchased at/near launch.

I just dropped my iPhone (G2) today for the ~20th time and the glass finally shattered. I was going to my car after work, opened my door, started to pull stuff out of pockets to throw on front seat, oops!

Anyways, what is the best course on getting this replaced or repaired? I do not want to move off of the Edge network (i like the $67 charge every mo.) so as I understand it, upgrading is not an option.

There are a few decent ones going for used/refurbished on Ebay. Is it as simple as buying a replacement and going into an American Telephone & Telegraph store to get my info switched over?

Me as well. I check my mail 95% on the phone, it's just too slow on my netbook.
Yeah my phone has been my primary method of checking my email since like 2006, back when we all used Blackberrys. Weirdly enough I never checked my mail that much on Windows Mobile before that. The main thing I did on WM was to watch movies through betaplayer, the software was kind of crap for most other things.

Any chance the iPhone 5 will be Edge compatible?

Dez said:
Yes it will be. Just like all previous iPhones.
Hmmmm, well, I guess... but I assume ATT still wont let you be "edge only". Love that unlimited $20 flat rate.

You can still get an unlimited data plan if you have a 2G iPhone?
According to a recent thread on macrumors.com, yes.

Yes if you have an original iPhone then yes you can accomplish your goal.

First it would be best to get a new Mini-SIM / Micro-SIM. Yes, it a single SIM Card that can be snapped down from a Mini-SIM to a Micro-SIM! This way you don't need more than one new SIM and once it is activated in the original iPhone you can just snap it down to a Micro-SIM and put in into the iPhone 4.

There is a rather long thread here that discusses the challenges that some have had trying to make the change: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1124040

The best option would be to use iTunes activation using a new SIM. Yes, there are other methods but it is a roll of the dice since you are depending on the skills of a random individual instead of an automated system!

1. Restore the original iPhone as "New"
2. Insert a new "unused" SIM ( Mini-SIM size, not a Micro-SIM )
3. Complete iTunes Activation steps using your exiting phone number
Note: in your example you would use your girlfriend's phone number
4. Wait for activation completion email, it may take 6-24 hours on a weekend or even longer!

Note: Doing this will also reset your voicemail and delete any existing messages still on the AT&T servers!

Note: Once you complete the iTunes activation, you exiting Micro-SIM will be deactivated in your iPhone 4 ( your girlfriend's phone will stop working!! ) the phone number moves with the active SIM!!!

So once you get the original iPhone activation email and verify that the original iPhone has the correct data plan: $20 iPhone Unlimited Data plan + 200 SMS Txt messages.

If you did not use my suggestion at the top concerning using a combined Mini-SIM / Micro-SIM card, you need to decide if you want to cut the Mini-SIM down to use in your iPhone 4 or just get yet another Micro-SIM and activate it on your iPhone 4. Yes, you can also use one of the many Mini-SIM trays but that has it's own issues. Sometimes they cause the Micro-SIM to get stuck in the SIM tray while it is in the iPhone so I don't recommend.

Again before you ask: Yes you have to restore the original iPhone as "New" and use a new unactivated Mini-SIM aka SIM for the rest of us. The original iTunes activation process wants to pair the SIM with the iPhone so if you try to reuse an existing active SIM it will not work to get the $20 iPhone unlimited data plan!

You will also not be able to keep the $20 data plan once you move back to the iPhone 4. For many the switch to the $30 iPhone Unlimited Data plan is automatic once the AT&T system detects the SIM is back in an iPhone 3G/3GS/4. You should receive a SMS Txt message telling you that you are on the wrong plan and for most customers the switch is automatic and since it is moving you from the $20 iPhone unlimited data plan + 200 SMS Txt messages, it should move you to the $30 data plan and add the $5 200 SMS Txt plan ( yes, AT&T has removed this option but the backend systems still will add it.

You can check the status by logging into your AT&T Wireless account ( OLAM ) and checking the features. Do bother to attempt to switch the data plans by using OLAM, it will fail. All else, read back through the other tread first to see what step you missed or skipped or did not wait for completion!

However, in some cases the move is not automatic due to your current type of plan with AT&T. Yes, there are specific reasons but that's not relevant for this discussion.

WARNING: If you call Customer Care or go to the AT&T store make sure that they don't screw up your existing iPhone 4 and it's unlimited data plan. Some reps are great and can make any adjustments while others don't have a clue.

To people who've used both the iPhone 2G and iPhone 4, which is better? From an ergonomics standpoint? The boxy, right angles of the iPhone 4 looked to be awkward and uncomfortable in your pocket. Also, the glass on the back seems it would be confusing. How do you know which is the front-side without looking?

best hand shape was the cheap looking iPhone 3g and 3gs. the iPhone 2g feels like a tank and since the curves are only along the side and not the back, it doesn’t feel very thin or easier to hold than the 4. iPhone 4 feels better than iPhone 2g for me. it’s much thinner and a bit lighter.

finding the front of the iPhone 4 is easy. just feel for the earpiece slit or the home button on the front face. takes an instant.

I just bought a used iPhone 2g off of Ebay for $124.

After visiting my local American Telephone & Telegraph store they confirmed that I could get an upgrade to a 3GS or iPhone 4 for $50 and $199 but that, yes, I'd be paying $10+ more a month. Even if the iPhone5 turns out to be Awesome, I doubt it warrants increasing my unfunded liabilities.

I'm a little peeved on how that Ebay auction turned out. Some bidder came in at the last second and increased the amount to just barely below my max bid. Without that I could've gotten it for $90 or so. I know how bidding works, but the history on that last bidder says that in the last 30 days they bid on 2877 items, each only once in the last hour. I'm suspicious it is some kind of robot used to go around pushing the bids of the highest bidder to thier max.

The 2G is heavier and feels high quality in a different way. Hard to explain.

The glass is on a different level though. Truly scratch and shatter proof. Dropped it shitloads of times and have the dents to prove it on the back but the glass is untouched.

Went in with my girlfriend to get her iPhone checked out (She's having issues with the home button and camera focusing) when I saw the white iPhone for the first time. So nice. It's what I originally wanted but I wasn't able to wait long enough due to a trop I needed the iPhone on.

Any possible way I could trade in my iPhone for a white one short of reselling the thing and buying an unlocked iPhone?

On the topic about the "Mail" for iPhone or iPad, does Hotmail work fine for all you guys? When I set up my Hotmail account, the mails I read or delete, don't seem to carry over to the actual Hotmail server on the Computer. So when I open my email account on the desktop, the mails are still there and unread.

Anybody else have the same issues?

Gahiggidy, if you're usIng a 2G iPhone then you can only go up to firmware 3.1.3. A four year old phone with two year old firmware.
Yeah, but so? What could I be missing out on?

I use Hotmail but not with the Mail app, I instead use their mobile-site version of Hotmail which does a pretty decent job.

It's because Hotmail/Live uses pop, which doesn't update both ways. IMAP does. Follow this tutorial to use ActiveSync with Hotmail: http://www.sirslur.com/2010/09/01/hotmail-has-imap-and-works-on-iphone/

Apparently, these are leaked parts of the iPhone 5, courtesy of MacRumors.

The battery is marked as a "DVT_B3", which means, it's a late development prototype.

Just saw this as well. That's one weird ass battery design. Has apple ever put a battery in any of their devices that wasn't a normal rectangle? Also, I think that camera piece confirms an aluminum backing.

Looks like a normal rectangle to me.

Is this a different design or am I just stupid? Follow up info, click the pic.

that first image in the other post shows a rectangle photographed at an angle so it looks like a trapezoid.

it's the Apple rumor equivalent of a bathroom mirror self shot

Wow I still cannot see that. :lol

Also is it true that an aluminum back like the iPad's would not work for a phone due to call reception/antennas etc etc, or was that just the shinny metal stuff?

perspective views. things get smaller as they recede in the distance.

the original iphone required a plastic band to keep the antennas as aluminum would shield them and reduce reception.

heck, just take a look at the plastic band on the ipad and ipad 2 with 3G antennas.

I'd be very surprised if this new iphone has an aluminum back with no plastic anywhere.

I think there are a lot of us that are hoping that the 5 keeps a similar design.

A thinner version would even be nice, with a notification light. Regardless I will be getting the 5 and it will be my first iphone.

I love the design of the iPhone 4, but only aesthetically. I won't miss the design if it's changed, that glass back is an extra worry.

Had the chance of playing around with a relative's iPad during the weekend (she had just bought it and needed someone who's more "tech savvy" to quickly teach her how to use everything, figure out the good apps, etc). I had never personally used an iDevice but getting more acquainted with what the App Store has to offer was the tipping point for me to buy an iPhone 4 today, even though I've had an HTC DHD for some months. I really like the HTC but the Android Market always felt lackluster and frankly I got tired of seeing so many apps and games that interest me being exclusive to iOS. /dearlivejournalpost

I certainly didn't need another smartphone right now but I definitely wanted it (a tablet wouldn't be of much use for me at this point for a few reasons, same for the iPod Touch). I thought about waiting for the iPhone 5 but heh, it will cost exorbitantly in my country for all of 2012 and I got a good deal on the 4.

Apple has a patent on putting the antenna inside the Apple logo on the back. This would allow them to use a unibody aluminum design.

I think the 3G still requires more than just that, or they can't yet squeeze it in with the wifi on the logo, as evidenced by the fact that the 3G iPad uses the large plastic window.

bingo.

I knew about the wifi antenna behind the logo but 3G antennas seemingly need more space. maybe in the future.
