The iPhone 4 |OT|

I am absolutely loving the new notification system. So many times I wanted to slam my phone on the ground because texts would interrupt the app I was currently using. Now, it's a little symbol up top, and NO INTERRUPTIONS!!

I am considering buying an iPhone for my wife as a birthday/christmas gift, who lives in Thailand now, but will be coming over next year sometime. I am thinking iPhone 4, because of the video chat and the reliability and ease of use of it. She isn't too tech savvy, so I think an iPhone would be a good choice for her.

I guess I'm asking how would I go about buying an iPhone 4 that is unlocked and can be used with a thailand sim card, and a US sim card when she comes over? And what kind of price range am I looking at here? Should I get used, or new? I would prefer new, but depends on the price.

I guess this is the right topic to ask this question, since I own an iPhone 4.
What is the best app to use if I want to appear online on gtalk and get chat responses there instead of my email? At the moment I'm using the gtalk web gadget (or something like that), but I have to log in every time I open the browser.

I would go with a new iPhone 4. Since the iPhone 4S is out the price for the 4 has dropped significantly. Also, a new 4 will come with iOS5.

Anyone got any ideas for taking my SIM card out of my 3GS with something other than a paperclip? In this paperless world, I don't fucking have one just lying around.

What contrived nonsense. Fuck.

None that I can currently find or think of and I'm having an even harder time thinking of something along those lines.

Am I really going to have to take a trip to the Super Market for this?

Slightly off-topic, but is there an official iDevice Accessory thread? I want to ask about the availability of an accessory, but it's not for the iPhone. Rather a general universal accessory.

Beejive will do it, along with AIM, Facebook, MSN, Yahoo, etc.
Ok, it seems I've got a problem with this app after all. The thing is, that when I'm online on my phone and am using my usual IM client (Miranda) on my PC at the same time, the messages seem to sometime go only to Beejive. Is there an option I've overlooked or something?

My AT&T account shows that my 4s order has gone from "Backordered" to "Processing." Anyone know how long it takes after that?

Also, what is their standard free shipping? Ground?

I'm having this problem with verbs I'm too. But also when I start a convo on my my pc the messages don't go to the phone. Instant messaging blows on the iPhone. Always has. It just doesn't feel connected. I'm already having moments where I'm not sure if I'm getting messages etc. I'm really counting down the days until a jailbreak solution arrives, then the phone will be almost perfect.

Does anyone know of a web site that sells cool looking cases for the iPhone 4?
I got one from getuncommon.com and it's great - its thin and has easy access to the areas needed for buttons or plugs. Awesome print also - looks great with good colors and really tough for the price

I had to restore my phone cause their was a problem with the speaker (I couldn't hear any sound when I answered calls, but the receiver could hear my voice)..so I searched the macforums and they told me to restore the iPhone.

But now, it just keeps showing "restoring iPhone from backup" (It's done in like 4 mins) so it apparently gets restored but it doesn't backup. I've done this process about 5 times now, it just restarts and I have to go back and restart the process of restoring.

So a strange problem started happening today. Haven't changed anything on my phone so I have no idea why, but when I play music it randomly stops for an extended amount of time then starts again. It seems to be random, but it can be triggered by locking my phone... the music will play for like 10 seconds then stop, then if I unlock my phone it will start automatically then stop a few seconds later, then if I lock it again it starts and stops again etc etc. Very weird... so now I'm restoring my phone to see if that helps :/

Recently got an iPhone 4, I plugged it in to charge via usb and the phone didn't charge. I looked at the connecter where it plugs into the iphone and it had some burn marks on the contacts.

Is this a problem with my phone, usb port or cable?

Cable is dead now anyway but WTF is this shit?

Just return it and get another one.

Guys, how worried should I be about charging my battery every day? I'm quite careful to ensure I get 2, sometimes 3 days battery from my phone but then I think to myself, why? Am I actually doing the battery any good by doing this? Or wouldn't it hurt just to keep running it down to 60% and then charging it all the way back up again?

I've been using a (temporary) iPhone 4 in the past two weeks and the battery is more than enough for moderate to heavy use everyday. The battery is going to weaken no matter what, you might as well use it to the fullest in the one or two years you will have it.

My battery drains like a sive thanks to iOS5. The new update didn't help. I've noticed my app don't run as smooth, especially with gestures. They sorta hiccup, or get stuck for a moment, when scrolling. The thing that pisses me off the most is the camera used to take very sharp pics before upgrading to iOS5. Now, they're a little fuzzy. It almost seems as if Apple gimped the camera in order to show how superior the new camera is on the i4S.

Fair point, thank you :)

If anything I've read that Li-ion prefer multiple short charges over empty to full ones. I don't think either way makes big enough of a difference to worry about it though.

That is great to know, thank you, means I can stop being so precious about the battery life and start using my phone a little more! \o/

They should last about 1000 charges right? That works out to approx 3 years on a 1 charge/day

And I'll prolly get a new iPhone every 2-3 years, so I shouldn't be worried about the battery running out right?

Can someone comfort me by saying the battery can be replaced if all else comes to fail?

iPhone 4 'combusts' on flight.

http://www.itnews.com.au/News/281568,rex-flight-drama-as-iphone-combusts.aspx

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has been called in to investigate an incident that allegedly involved an Apple iPhone self-combusting on a regional NSW flight.

Regional Express (REX) said in a statement [pdf] that after one of its planes landed in Sydney late last week, a passenger's handset "started emitting a significant amount of dense smoke, accompanied by a red glow".

The incident was first reported by the Coffs Coast Advocate newspaper.

"In accordance with company standard safety procedures, the flight attendant carried out recovery actions immediately and the red glow was extinguished successfully," the airline said.

An Apple Australia spokesman has been contacted for comment on whether the device maker has attempted to establish if the iPhone is genuine.

Who knows whatever the hell 'recovery actions' means, but the phone looks like a fake to me:

The only things I notice is there doesn't seem to be an LED flash by the camera lens, the text appears printed on the glass and I'd thought it's actually on the body underneath (but I could be wrong about that), and the text/logo looks white instead of silver (though that could be a flash reflection or something).

Other than that, who knows.

So my awesome iPhone 4 got stolen/lost last week. Since I assumed I just left it somewhere I tried looking for it with find my iPhone however as of now still no luck. If it really did get stolen then a somewhat knowledgeable thief would be able to circumvent the find my iPhone service by switching it off, removing the sim and then restore the phone.
I remember when performing a restore/ios upgrade some information is sent to Apple. I have no idea what exactly is being sent but I was thinking, what if I mailed Apple asking if they could at least confirm if the phone has been restored after I lost it? Then I at least know it is in someone else's possession and I can somewhat move on with my life.
Has anyone after tried this or something similar? In fact, are there any people here that successfully retrieved their stolen/lost iPhones? I need some feel good stories right now :(

I saw some guy on the subway this morning press his finger against the camera + led (with it on I believe) and have some circular graph on the screen move. Does anyone know which app that was?

at this point with the iphone 4s out, is it worth it to get a cheap iphone 4? or wait till the 4s drop price?

How often do you upgrade? Personally, I'd get the 4S[/QUOTE

Unless you absolutely have to use Siri there's not that much of a difference.
