The issue of using Xbox One as an "semi" offline console.

Yes, you can take screenshots of every game at anytime, and copy them to an USB drive, or upload them via Twitter and Facebook (unless the game forbids you, to stop you from posting heavy spoilers, for example). Hell it even save videos of your gameplay automatically, and it's very easy to deal with this stuff, copy, upload it, edit it, etc.

And what I mean "paying for it" it's because some games on the Xbox 360 have a photomode, in which you can take pictures of the game (Forza, for example). But the problem is: you can't upload them if you don't pay for a Xbox Live subscription. And you can't even copy them to an USB drive to see those pics on you PC. F*ck, you can't even have a Netflix subscription on the Xbox without having to pay for a Xbox Live Gold account. It really sux having basically everything behind a paywall.
Where have you been?

No, you can't even check your trophies offline, it's a freaking file and you can't access to it without an internet connection. Also if you have'nt set your PSN account as primary, a lof of games don't even work or what's even worse, they keep spamming your screen with the "you need internet" message.

Both consoles, you can add the Vita too, suck offline.

You are correct. I have both systems and as the OP I work many weeks or months underway on a Navy vessel and you'd be shocked at the number of half-functioning consoles aboard. Additionally, the free games downloaded via PS+ are inaccessible in no-internet mode.

Just a heads up about the update problem. If you turn it to energy saving mode it stops the xbox from auto updating for you. You will then need to manually update it by going to settings>system>update console. This will prevent bad updates going through and stop the update error.

While individual updates are quite manageable in size ( ~ 260 MB) on the Xbox One, if you "skip" one it can't apply the delta update and needs a full OS image. That's ~ 2.5 GB. Given how full discs have become already I guess we won't see them delivered alongside games anytime soon.

It definitely should be possible to access more functionality while offline - especially the Pins-Feature, given that it easily can be cached on the console itself. Recently I had to switch the console to offline because DA:I was unable to connect to EA's servers (seems to have been an issue on their end) and that game won't let you access the menu while it's trying to connect...

I'm still trying to figure out the original issue. When you pack your games to go abroad or to the ship I guess you will have a fully updated console at that time. So all your games you take with you should be working? Or are you getting new games delivered overseas or to the boat? Given that the games aren't updating either they should not start to require updates before you connect again? Just curious.

As for the Xbox Live Paywall - it's gone for regular Apps. Only online gaming requires a Gold subscription now. Screenshots are scheduled for sometime this year (they have not given a definitive date but they're coming). The photo modes in Games like Forza are a different thing altogether if you ask me as they not merely allow you to take screenshots but also alter rendering parameters in order to give even higher quality results.

This is false. I have used my PS+ games in offline they are just dated to the end of your subscription period and will not update until you log in again. Though you do have to make sure the console is set as your primary. Also I have used my Vita without updating it for months and having it offline and it still works fine.

Setting the console as primary seems to be the main issue here. I know lots of people who couldn't play their PS4 games during the PSN outage on christmas and it was basically down to the console not being set as primary.

I guess they should add a prompt to do so as part of the setup routine (guess it's not there - otherwise this issue would not be so common) - I don't own a PS4.

Err you know that the Vita has a mode called Airplane ? I have used it several weeks offline in this mode without any problems. Probably 50% of my Vita games are from PS+ that I´ve collected over a year and none of them has ever asked me to connect to the Internet.

On the Xbox 360, as I've said before. I also said before that I'm not interested at all on the Xbox One, so I don't know about everything about the box.

So then why talk about what the XB1 can and can't do if you don't know the feature set?

There is a prompt, as soon as you setup a user on the console it asks you if you want to set it as the primary console of the account/user. I guess a lot of people said no for whatever reason.

I wouldn't go as far as saying it was PR bullshit, new games need an updated consoles to work. Especially in the case of games that turn off the Kinect and run better. (The SDK update that gave X1 1080p Destiny rather than 900p, etc)

It is pure bullshit. They were unequivocal on the online updates at the "correction" before launch, and they simply lied.

I just set up a ps4 two days ago and the setup screen asked me if I wanted to make the system my primary console. I don't remember what the default answer was though.

Xbox live Gold is not required for Netflix use on either console. You stated you have no interest in the Xbox One, and don't know the basics about the 360. Why are you here again?

You do realize what you stated isnt even true on the Xbox 360, and hasnt been for a while?

You CAN use Netflix without gold on both. You also can't take screenshots so you are spreading misinformation.

The default answer is set this console as my home console. You have to actively choose no. I think a lot of people are PS+ sharing without realizing that without logging in you lose everything without the home console setting.

If you want to start a pity party you really should have some basic knowledge of what you are talking about. It hasn't been that way for a while now.

Or at least put the version that complies with the game in the disk...
You need version 3 to play Alien Isolation? Put the version 3 on the disk...

This will NEVER happen. EVER.

What makes you think Sega wants to be liable if you brick your console for an update shipped on their game disc? That is absolutely one mess no publisher wants to deal with.

It will NEVER happen.

Wasn't that what happened last gen? Pretty sure most games if not all ship(ed) with required system updates.

They charge you to upload Forza pics?
I think what he is trying to say is that you need a gold sub to upload Forza pics. Forza wasn't actually mentioned by DD in he previous posts so don't know how TheHellsLord jumped to that conclusion. Is there even an offline more for Forza, I don't know as I'm always online. Also is 'Xbox One' and 'screenshot' like a bat signal to you, I'm impressed :) .

EDIT: Now I see the Forza reference.

Irs a bit of a joke really. Can't even play videos using the Xbox video app (using the play to function from a windows PC) without a connection to Live.

I'd love for somebody at Microsoft to be able to give the a straight answer as to why that is.

This is very true.

I've purchased movies via Xbox Video and nothing physically downloads...so if you aren't connected to live, you can't watch your purchased movies, tv shows, etc.

Really dumb in my opinion.

They did.

Plus thinking someone can file suit for a bricked console is kinda silly. Terms and conditions shit all over any attempt anyone could make to that end.

Sounds like a pain. Have you contacted support for answers? I know they'll probably be useless, but it's worth asking I guess.

Not to mention if an update did that MS would fix it for free. Needing to sue over it would be silly.

When?! I never once had a game that shipped with an OS update on it.

This is really crappy. Updates should absolutely be on the disc as they were last gen.

Uh no....

Yes. That's exactly what happened.

If you haven't connected to Xbox Live in a while, your console software might need updating. If a game disc includes a newer version of the console software than you currently have, the game disc will prompt you to install the update when you start the game.

Note If you choose not to update your console software, you'll receive a prompt to update the next time you start the game. Some Kinect games require a console software update to work properly.
I'm not aware of any lawsuits

Not true, all that app paywall got taken down a couple months after Phil Spencer took charge.
But it is crazy that you have to have gold for Forza screenshots...:/

Anyways, they are going to add a screenshot feature to X1 soon, but they said it has taken so long because they haven't found a good solution for how to take them properly.

I wonder why they are having a problem and Sony didn't.

Also, I never knew about updates being on the game disc, but that is really cool! I wonder why they haven't done that for the X1 disc, but I guess it wan's really conceived as an offline console.

MS does too many updates to be able to put them on the disk. The games are pressed without the OS because it will be out of date a month later.

The OS updates that are required are because MS is tweaking stuff on the console itself to be able to run games better. This isn't just add screenshot.

For example, the XBO OS will be switched from W8 to W10 kernal during the early part of the year. They will then rollout the full new OS later in the year. They will likely be tweaking this prior to release. It would be nearly impossible for a game developer to keep having the game go to print during the course of the year.

Says this on the website.

Your collection follows you from screen to screen, so you can watch whenever and wherever you like. You can even download your favorites on Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 to enjoy them offline.

Maybe just an Xbox console thing or some hidden option.

I'm not sold on buying on any video service, waters are too muddy.

Well the ability to watch on multiple devices is why this doesn't work. Unless you want all your devices to download the entire movie and then check back in with the server to see where you are in the movie.

In addition, a full HD download of a movie will take up a bunch of space on the HDD. The consoles aren't geared towards that use which is why some people are using Plex.

Yeah. Because I usually play it at work, my vita is hardly ever online. It works fine save for stuff that actually needs online (freedom wars for example can't log my contribution to my panopticon to help push it higher than other panopticons. But it plays fine).

MS does too many updates to be able to put them on the disk. The games are pressed without the OS because it will be out of date a month later.

The issue is that a game requires a certain version of the OS. It should simply include that version. The version the game requires definitely is not newer than the one they tested it with => that version is available at the time the discs are produced.

It's not really about being completely up to date but rather to have all the software available you need to play the game.

Anyways, they are going to add a screenshot feature to X1 soon, but they said it has taken so long because they haven't found a good solution for how to take them properly.

I wonder why they are having a problem and Sony didn't.

Sony added the share button to their controller. This makes it quite easy to handle the scenario. Microsoft does not have a method that is as instantaneous and I guess the problem is not to get the picture data (which they already support with the Feedback App for Beta Testers) but rather in how to properly support the feature given that it's a multi-button press (similar to video recording where you double-press Guide and then X). Perhaps they are working on capturing a backlog of frames (similar to the video but at full quality) so you can pick what you actually wanted to capture instead of missing it by a few seconds and I can see that being hard to optimize with the bandwidth constraints that are in place. That's just my assumption though.

Didnt they say "If you cant connect to the internet, buy a x360 !" ?!

It sucks really hard, and although im a bit bitter on the M$ dirty ways, my PS4 kind of freaked when the PSN was down, games would crash, all sorts of silly things. Its unfortunate, but it looks like none of the consoles fully work offline, at least for now. Altough despite the freaking of the PS4, its still better than the X1 not completely working because it needs updates/internet connection.

I agree that it's dumb. I understand the need for games to use an updated version of the OS. However, the update should be on the game disc or something like they used to.

And such a future for the industry, is a future without me as a customer.

If enough follow, then it shall be the end of the industry.

Yet the industry shall blame us.

So be it.

Fuck them.

This is the most hilariously dramatic thing ever.

Huh, I still want clarification on this whole charging to upload screenshots. Doesn't make a lick of sense to me. Unless someone took my post in a different thread seriously about them charging to upload to OneDrive...

And yeah, I just have a sixth sense when it comes to Xbox and screenshots being mentioned in the same sentence.

It does but it tries to force you to connect or jump through hoops. Windows 8 does the same. Sometimes when I try to play a local video it says "You are offline, connect to the internet" with no obvious way of exiting and starting the video. What the f**k is it to you if I'm offline or not MS. Completely unnecessary.

Well since its our main use of the console at the moment its quite frustrating to say the least. There doesn't seem to be a way around it if you are using "play to".

I'd expect this to be much improved in Windows 10 on XB1 given that a PC OS would face a lot more issues if it didn't run applications without updates.

PS4 might be a better option in the short term.
