The issue of using Xbox One as an "semi" offline console.

Neither the PS4 nor Xbox One offer that great of a purely offline experience. I wish the Xbox One had pins while offline, it's kind of ridiculous that it doesn't. On the PS4 you can't even your trophies while offline which is also pretty ridiculous.

I guess I don't fully understand where the OP is coming from though, I've never had any issues running games on either console despite having both offline pretty frequently.

Thanks. Looks like I have to buy me a PS4 instead.

I'd check with MS first. I think people get confused because you always need the latest update to use online, even for a game that came out last year you would have to update to play online. But to be able to play the game I'd be very surprised if there wasn't the necessary update on the disc, I'd even think they'd be legally obliged to put it on the disc.

You do realize what you stated isnt even true on the Xbox 360, and hasnt been for a while?

You CAN use Netflix without gold on both. You also can't take screenshots so you are spreading misinformation.

I'd give him a pass on the whole Netflix-paywall thingee. Not all X360 owners know about that update (especially those that don't frequent video game message boards). I had to verbally tell at least 3 of my friends that they could now use Netflix and YouTube without paying MS $60 a year.

I still wonder what will happen when they can`t fit a pure single player game on a 50 GB Blu Ray. Will I have to download the remaining part of the game? Because that will become a huge issue.

That's how Halo MCC did it but it isn't purely single player. The only title I could see doing something like that would be the Uncharted collection because it would be massive.

Yeah, but that part was for the multiplayer, so it wouldn`t bother me.

How does the console know there's an update if it's offline? Internal timer?

If they included updates on the discs for the 360, what the hell is stopping them from doing it with the One?

Nothing is stopping them. I feel like the console was made to be always online, and they didn`t reverse everything after the DRM backlash.

The console know there`s an update if the game is brand new, and the OS isn`t updated.

You are correct. I have both systems and as the OP I work many weeks or months underway on a Navy vessel and you'd be shocked at the number of half-functioning consoles aboard. Additionally, the free games downloaded via PS+ are inaccessible in no-internet mode.

Well why dont you have that ps set as primary console?

The bigger issue is that many games are pretty poor out of the box nowadays and absolutely need updates to function properly. That happens on both consoles.

All good friend. If your console was always connected to the net, it's likely you wouldn't know as it would never happen.

Yeah, but that's not an issue with Microsoft or Sony. EA and Ubisoft are pretty bad.

Not surprising as both have shown they really want to move to requiring online for all their games. EA had to back off a bit but Ubisoft is at it full force.

Setting the console as primary seems to be the main issue here. I know lots of people who couldn't play their PS4 games during the PSN outage on christmas and it was basically down to the console not being set as primary.

I guess they should add a prompt to do so as part of the setup routine (guess it's not there - otherwise this issue would not be so common) - I don't own a PS4.

It does prompt you to set it as primary. It's one of the first things it does after you enter you PSN after set-up. I'm not exactly sure why people choose not to. Maybe because It doesn't explain and consequences(that I remember).

Huh, I still want clarification on this whole charging to upload screenshots. Doesn't make a lick of sense to me. Unless someone took my post in a different thread seriously about them charging to upload to OneDrive...

And yeah, I just have a sixth sense when it comes to Xbox and screenshots being mentioned in the same sentence.
Maybe DD was being dramatic? Honeslty I dunno, I have a gold sub so can't test the whole 'not being able to upload Forza screenshots' thing.

BTW now all I can see if that kid from the Sixth Sense saying 'I see hollow man' :) .

You can take screenshots on X1?

Since when?
Gzuz people, I'm talking about the photomode on games like Forza 4 and PGR4.

Xbox live Gold is not required for Netflix use on either console. You stated you have no interest in the Xbox One, and don't know the basics about the 360. Why are you here again?

That's how it was last time I checked.
And f*ck 'em if this has changed. They lost me before that.

And how I cannot f*ckin take pictures with Forza's Photomode, or GTA V, or PGR4, for example?

The PS4 doesn`t need the mandatory OS update in order to run games, and they ship their bundles with physical games. I would say that Sony cares more about offline gamers than Microsoft does.

Not entirely true. TLOU is a digital voucher, and that comes with every ps4.

Are those not game specific features built into individual titles and not a OS or system wide feature? They are entirely different things and a game feature wouldn't really be expected to used at the platform level for uploads. Those specific use features are incredibly limited and up to the individual developer to implement.

The Xbox One only supports uploads of videos because it is a system level feature and no limited to a specific title.

WAIT WAIT WAIT

Xbox One discs don't actually contain the necessary minimum OS updates to run them?

That's fucking LUDICROUS!!! Why is this not a bigger deal??

Does the PS4 do the same?

As far as I know every single previous console with an upgradable OS (PSP, Vita, 3DS, Wii, PS3, 360) has ALWAYS provided the necessary OS update on the physical media. Taking that away makes NO SENSE.

Does the PS4 do the same?

I could be wrong but from my experience PS4 doesn't require you to update to play a game long as you don't want to go online. Any online functionality will require it though (annoying everytime I want to play Netflix and there is an update I keep pushing off). In fact, I think I may remember playing GTA online before updating but that one I could totally be remembering wrong so take that with a very light grain of salt.

I'm rarely offline but I do wish you could check your trophies offline on PS4. Thats really the only thing I can think of that has no reason to not work when offline. Everything else works if you're set to primary.

OT: Yeah, I would just call MS and see if they will ship you the update. It's inconvenient but if I only had one console, I wouldn't switch over this. Obviously there is something that made you initially prefer the XB1.

Doesn't really say the latest version is on the disc just that you can update from a disc.

If PS4 doesn't require an update to play games then what happens if you play a game that was developed for a newer version of the SDK?

Every single PS3 game ever released comes with the update file that was the most recent at the time the game was printed. It's quite probably the same in every PS4 game as well.

To me it's a console breaking deal. But I totally agree with you.

No, PS4 and Wii U doesnt pull this crap.

I would imagine the reason its not on a disc for Xbox one is because the OS has gotten monthly updates for quite awhile now. The gap between a game going gold and a new OS update would most likely never align. By the time the game comes out it would have the last months OS on it.

Ok, but why did they let me copy these images to an USB drive, but didn't let me load them on my PC because it was all encripted on a weird file format? Speaking of a USB drive, if you wanted to use one on the X360, you had to format it on the console on a weird way that makes it useless on any other device, unless you reformat it again on your PC to a normal file format. See, these are the little things that got on my nerves before, and made me quit the boat after three Xboxes I had, making me buying a PS for the first time in my life. If they changed these stuff after all that bashing with the Xbone, good for them, but they lost me before that.

For more than 10 years I've been saying to myself that I would buy the console that has Halo and PGR. Except for Halo Reach, I didn't enjoy what they did with with the franchise, and they also killed PGR. I used to love Forza too, but Forza 4 brought tears of boredom on my eyes. Forza Horizon was nice, but not enough to hold my interest on the Xbox brand anymore. Time to try something else for me.

They don't need to put every update on the disc. Just the most important one. Don't brick my game just because my console isnt online all the time.

Personally though, I just don't want to support the platform that leads the charge in anti-consumer measures and lying while it's doing so.

That is exactly why I will never buy the xbone even after the change their policies because I see where their head space is and I can't support that bullshit.

Just as an FYI, the whole thing about being able to update the PS4 from a disk I believe is just referring to providing the capability of allowing the end user to download the update and burn it to their own disk, and does not mean that OS updates are included on retail game disks.

Been without internet at my home for about 30 days now, because a fire in the building destroyed all the wiring and AT&T is slow as hell to come back out and fix the problem. While I haven't bought any new Xbox One titles and thus haven't experienced what OP is talking about, I have been playing my PC without internet. Steam switched to Offline mode no problem - I can access my steam games except for the crysis series. I didn't know this, but crysis authenticates every time it plays, I get a "cannot connect to EA servers" error when trying to launch it. Similarly, I can't play any of my origin games at all.

Boo on EA.

Here's another online document from Sony with slightly different wording for you

http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps4/settings/update.html

Update files might also be included on game discs. When you play a disc that contains a more recent version of the system software, a screen will be displayed to guide you through the update process. Follow the screens to perform the update.

Like people have stated it happened last gen too.

Also where are you getting the info Sony allows OS updates to run off burnt discs?

The PS3 didn't have system level features for video or screenshots, but when individual games implemented those features (Just Cause 2, Uncharted 2, Dragon's Dogma etc.) the media files were there to do what you wanted with them - copy to USB, upload to internet. It was an unnecessary restriction to place on the 360, really.

That's completely irrelevant. On other consoles the update on the disc was also most likely already out of date by the time you put it in your console. But it's still there so you can ACTUALLY PLAY THE GAME.

I once brought a PS3 game to a friend's house who had not connected his PS3 to the Internet for more than a year (he had no WiFi reaching that room). Upon starting the game it prompted to install the update on the disc because the OS on his PS3 was way too old. It was an ~8 month old game so that update was already very outdated at this point, but what does it matter? The only important thing is that we were still able to play the game without needing Internet access.

The first thing I do with my PS4 was inserting the bundled LBP3 disc, and then it automatically updated itself from the disc, so no. Since Sony have bigger presence on the rest of the world which might not have the luxury of fast, stable internet that the first world countries had, I think they'll make their console able to be played offline without hassle in mind.

Yep, I know it happened last gen too, but the whole crux of this thread and as the OP stated is it used to happen with the 360 but does not happen with the One. So clearly what used to happen and what does happen are two different things. Again, it is the main reason the OP is complaining.

However now that you have supplied this much more specific wording, apparently it does support installing the OS from the retail disk, I stand corrected.

The current Xbox team is still trying to fix all the fuck ups made with the design of the XB1. Maybe by the end of the generation it will be almost as usable as the 360.

Lol, there's a reason why Microsoft and EA are so buddy buddy.

360 only updated once or twice a year.
