Yeah, but why start with awful c-tier announcements? This shit should be hidden in the deepest levels of apple.com or mentioned in passing, not being featured prominently in a press conference.

Why? Environment and health isn't as important as a Mac or iPhone refresh? lol

Sorry, I'm not buying this false hope they're peddling with Health Kit.

It's just data collecting. The issue with research, especially medical research, is the veracity of reporting.

Self reported surveys are still used widely, but those have big issues such as lack of accuracy and accountability. Not to mention the fallible nature of human memory.

Haha I love this. Apple's showing its responsible side and all the shallow people are like "this sucks"

yeah that's how I reacted :/

largest Parkinson's research project in history in 24h? who cares, gimme new iPad

interesting to consider the recent privacy/crypto discussions with the FBI in light of the emphasis on highly detailed personal health tracking, no?

This shit is so cool TBH. I can really see how being able to monitor symptoms with CareKit can help people get a hold of their illnesses.

It might even cut down on hypochondria too if it works

You gotta save the best for last. "Oh, and one more thing," and all that. They are still a business first and foremost.

Because might as well put out the sparkly happy announcements for the shareholders before the big hardware announcements.

It's the best way to get awareness out, since they know you'll be sticking around for the products.

Also, it's probably corporate PR, to make it seem like Apple is largely focused on the public good just before they tangle with the government this week.

I have a time for caring about the planet bla bla and a time for caring about shiny things. This is my shiny-thing-caring-time.

Yeah, and I'm not buying that the Apple Watch is some magical device that's going to give them super advanced accurate readings. The thing can't even get an accurate pulse consistently. Obviously, I don't know the tech, I'm just skeptical that it is as good as they say.

Pushing into other sectors like health and the environment is massively important for Apple as we reach diminishing returns in terms of smartphone/computer innovation. Makes sense that they're spending so much time on this. They'll probably eventually make a shit ton of money from the healthcare sector on this sort of thing in the near future.

I know a lot of people are hating on this, but as someone who recently worked on a HealthKit app I see the need for CareKit if Apple really wants to provide this kind of utility. The existing APIs for this stuff is just not very good.

Well the tech is still progressing. It's good they have platform for it going forward.

Medical research has been limited for a while due to poor reporting methods. But it's not a silver bullet. It's just better data reporting.

I love this tweet :)

A lot of the health initiatives in the health field are fantastic. I live in the south so I'm sure we won't be seeing any implementation for the next 20 years but it's exciting to think about.

Apple isn't an authority on the environment, health or medical research. People follow these press conferences for product or interesting feature announcements, not what we are seeing now. The first 30 minutes have been completely pointless for Apple consumers.

Not for me and I'm an Apple consumer. Try not to speak for everyone just cause you're bored.

This neat and all but how accessible it this HealthKit stuff? Is it just for people with really expensive private healthcare?

Just like they have all of your passwords, banking information, call and text history, etc. right? What a dumb thing to say.

I'm not agreeing with the poster you quoted, however there are very few apple events a year. I can see why as a consumer they would be annoyed.

Going in with absolutely the wrong expectations. Obnoxious as hell to demand quick and flashy product announcements only.

Not if you're an Apple consumer who uses those tools or works in the physician field or whatnot
