The Medium is Xbox Series X console exclusive. Cannot be done on current gen

It was reported that MS was in Poland looking to buy up studios a while back.
It could be that MS was in Poland to see Bloober about this game?

On their Twitter they said they are also working on a PC version, tweet is two days old.

I read somewhere that the switches between the "medium" world and real world happen instantly, so no level for example. Maybe this info was already covered in here already, I only skimmed the thread with my good eye. 😉 I need to figure out when I can get new glasses.

If they are touting the XSX features for the game, I wonder what the PC version will be like/require.

I'm not going to speak for them but I'd have to guess what they meant by, "impossible on last gen hardware" was "Impossible on last gen hardware... with the skill and means that we have to meet our standards." Just like lots of devs who say similar when finally making the decision to start making their dream game on better hardware. Which we have seen devs say many times. They just could have stated it a little better IMO. I do wish more devs would go more into specifics...

What I hear when devs say things like this, is that there is a level of fidelity that they want to achieve with their game and they don't want to compromise that.

After this game is made to said standards, they absolutely could still scale it back to run on weaker hardware. But some artists, storytellers, devs want a certain level of fidelity to sell the atmosphere along with the mechanics of the game and scaling all that back might compromise the entire visual fidelity and feel of the game too much for them. These are called developmental standards. Some devs don't mind scaling for weaker hardware because they think their games wouldn't be compromised due to the type of game or their standards are lower.

And this rings true even if they would only need to compromise in resolution or fps to scale back, which I believe is what MS is going to do with their first party games. It's their choice. They just have different standards. This doesn't mean that the game won't be as good as it could be on better hardware. As long as you developed for the hardware you wanted to in order to hit your standard. It would mean however, that the game scaling down for weaker hardware wouldn't meat your highest standard.

Sometimes, your standard could be the same as someone else that is developing on current hardware, that's the fidelity you want to reach. But you don't have the skill, money or team size/time to make it work there like they do to your standards. So more powerful and easier to work with hardware, where you don't have to pull so many tricks and such to make everything work to your standard, would make it easier to reach that standard.

HOWEVER!

The game is still coming to PC... Where it will need to scale to weaker hardware... So unless they have higher minimum hardware requirements, at least matching the XBSX... I may call BS if they don't explain.

Again

The change of world, there are a lot of games where the effect can be done without problem, thanks to the current techniques of animation and it does not consume console resources.

You have no clue what you are talking about. If the game requires more than 80 MB of data pushed into RAM in a second, yeah, it's simply not possible on current gen consoles. What's up with the snarky comments like you know anything about game development? Yeah, some games like Titanfall did it. With one corridor. And repetitive textures. For a damn reason. Because that was the only way they could do it.

If it's just 2 worlds, it's possible an increased ram requirement can store both in RAM, just needing long initial load times. However if the game were to be more ambitious, for example ability to switch between 5 worlds at any point then the RAM requirement would become absurd and could not be done without fast streaming.

Depending on game design, next gen ssd offers limitless potential bound only by storage size. Workarounds can only go so far to compensate for a design built around this.

Even then there could be further LOD and asset streaming as you traverse the world. Keeping both worlds in ram would require the hidden world to stream assets also, doubling the real-time stream requirement further complicating things.

Microsoft never said there wouldn't be exclusives, they said that they wouldn't have first party Next gen exclusives for at least the first year. We already know battlefield6 is also going to be next GEN exclusive as well.

I guess we have to take their word for it, there was less than 10 seconds of actual gameplay and what they did show was her walking, running or scooting by a ledge all by herself, even the rain looked current gen. This is off topic but please I would like to pray to the gaming gods that next gen give us transparent rain that let's light pass through it in every game instead of these white toothpicks!! lol.

Female protagonist, psychological thriller/ horror...sounds very Silent Hill/Eternal Darkness to me. I miss Eternal Darkness. Hopefully this games find a way to have bug crawl on my screen and make it seem like the game volume is being turned up out of my control.

Yea they need ssd for switching between worlds . They mentioned in another post I believe

This is probably similar to time shifting in titanfall 2. But that was done pretty effectively on current gen. It's not something that's taxing the drive, they are just making another level with a press of a button or it just happening automatically to progress the story. This isn't really something new, it's a tactic used before to try and simulate the physiological aspect. I'm not really sure how the ssd falls into this as needed.

True even dishonered 2 on current gen had one level where u have to switch instantly between 2 worlds and it was fucking amazing. Highly recommended if you haven't tried it .

Eternal Darkness is one of my GOAT games and I always throw it out there when Top GC Games discussions get going
