The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

Freedom Call's new album "Beyond" is pretty bloody great. Just listened to it from start to finish, not one weak song on this album. Especially love "Rhythm Of Light" with it's cheesy-ass synth, and vocal harmonies. Love the switch in atmsophere and speed after 1:30 too! I need to get into power metal again

And "Come On Home" is certaintly the type of tune I'd put on after getting hammered with the boys!

Bang your head or die! Lyrics are so fuckin' cheesy! Love it.

despite being a huge power metal mark i never quite managed to get into Freedom Call. i think the only album i enjoyed was Circle of Life, but i'll give this one a spin.

I also bought And Justice For All.... used. Because I'm not giving Metallica any money.

Have you heard of "And Justice for Jason"? The fan-made remixed songs where Jason Newsted's bass lines actually exist? Somebody took the bass lines from the Rock Band tracks and mixed them into the original songs.

If not check it out:

It's practically a whole new album. If only we could get an official version...

Yeah, I've heard a few songs off the whole concept, but I haven't listened to all of it. I agree that a new remixed version would be great.

Though honestly, I think the production is kind of cool, for some reason. It's never bothered me, personally.

My favorite sub-sub-genre of metal is probably South/Central American death thrash bands like Shub Niggurath, The Chasm, Mortuary (Mex), Cenotaph, etc., and there was a bit of a revival in this style when I last listened to metal, with Anal Vomit (from 2004) and Force of Darkness (prob. my album of the year for 2006) putting out fantastic stuff, so those were the bands that I was most interested in checking for new material, but it's all shit.

I'm especially disappointed in the latest Shub Niggurath. There's no life to any of this! Listen to the drumming! I can't believe all of the comments on this video are positive. They used to be so rad and evil. The latest Anal Vomit, also lifeless. What's even up with that production? What's going on with the levels here? This is making my penis soft, man. The latest Force of Darkness is respectable at least, but rather boring compared to their debut.

Speaking of disappointment, though unrelated to South/Central America, nothing has topped the latest Denial of God. I mean, what the fuck is that main riff? Is that a ska riff? Ugh. And I don't even need to bother posting the dumb lyrics because the dude is somehow perfectly intelligible.

The latest Asmegin is also garbage and I'm not really feeling Kindly Bent to Free Us either.

I hope some of you like these tunes so at least someone will get something out of this new material because all I'm getting is disappointment.

Edit: I've actually discovered tons of great stuff by new bands in the past few weeks, so I'm not saying "metal is shit" these days or anything like that, I just wanted to bitch and share some tunes.

Well listened to a bunch of music today, here's a little overview of some of the better stuff I gave a spin.

Edguy - "Space Police - Defenders Of The Grown"
122_-_Space_Police-Defenders_Of_The_Crown.jpeg

Edguy never fails to at least bring out a competent or good Power metal album and this is no exception. Tobias delivers vocally as usual. It's a journey through fast paced power anthems, and even a catchy ballad or two! And a funny little ditty about England.

"Because England haaaas....Steve Harris"! Brilliant.

Persuader - "The Fiction Maze"
115_-_The_Fiction_Maze.jpg

Some good thrash infused power metal on this album, along with a bunch of slower more chuggy tunes. Great vocal work by Jen Carlsson on this album too. He gives off a "Blind Guardian" vibe when he hits those high notes, which is no bad thing, considering BG are bloody brilliant! Never really known these fella's to put out a bad album yet!

Pretty Maids - "Louder Than Ever"
26_-_Louder_Than_Ever.jpg

If there's one thing you can count on with Pretty Maids it's a catchy, easy listening sound. And the melodic power metal band delivers the goods yet again! Whilst nowhere near as good as their previous album "Motherland" (which is totally worth listening to by the way), the boys have managed to produce another solid album filled with a lot of memorable vocal harmonies, and some great instrumental hooks. Worth a spin!

Queensryche - "Queensrÿche"
8346-converted.jpg

Holy shit, they finally did it, they got rid of Tate. With him gone and with a new singer to take his place, this is the best the ol' Ryche have sounded in a long time. Solid album throughout. It may not be an "Operation Mindcrime", but it's a bloody good start for the band to get back on the right track! With Tate gone this hopefully signals a revival for the once troubled band.

The Winterlong is a FANTASTIC album and it's a shame that it's their only one.

Utumno is another short lived Swedish death metal band related to God Macabre. They shared some members, I believe, and also only had one release, unfortunately.

just ran into these guys on youtube today

This one got a pretty recent re-release too. Classic album.

Man, i love Utumno so much. This needs a re-release as well so more people can hear it.

Metallica have some of the most demanding fans ever and it's pissing me off.

First there are some that wants James to start drinking again so they can be Metal again, what a fucking moronic thing to say, I don't think they know the seriousness of alcoholism.

Second, I would love for another Load/ReLoad but I know that's never going to happen because of the pressure from fans, it's like they want Metallica to prove themselves and make Master Of Puppets 2 or some shit, that's never going to happen.

They made four masterpieces during the 80's, they aint got to prove shit.

Added to my library a while ago actually, but really only listened to it last night at the gym based on your post. Agreed that it's a great album, just really FUN from start to finish.

My biggest complaint with DM is that it felt forced. They are clearly doing what the fans want and at the end of the day, while a good album, it seemed like it lacked heart. I really hope their newest album doesn't turn out like that.

At least St. Anger had some emotion, like all their previous albums.

they made the only bearable Metallica song (Dyers Eve) sound a bit better so hats off to them.

Wow, really? That's pretty terrible.

Eh, I've mostly ignored Metallica now that Megadeth have picked up the slack and make mostly good albums year after year. Their talent peaked with the Black album in my opinion, where as Megadeth are still going fairly strong, especially with the likes of "United Abominations" which was a belter of an album. The latest album "Super Collider", not so much.

For me, Metallica are one of the few big thrash bands that didn't come out of the 90's phase of thrash unscathed sadly. Testament are the new kings of the genre in my opinion.

I'm so glad the new Boris turned out decent.

But holy shit, Eyehategod fucks away everything. Never been too much into them, but damn the new record is solid. That riffage is as nasty as it is catchy, they're like the hobo-version of Torche.

What do people expect from 30-40 year old bands? Good albums are the exception and not the rule. Its usually some half assed shit or fan service trying to recapture former glory.

A better case for success is a reunion album after a long break, but thats also incredibly rare.

Too old, too bored, too rich, etc.

The new Mastodon album (available for streaming via iTunes) is goddam superlative. I wasn't completely sold on it until around the sixth or seventh listen, but at this point I've already listened to it more times than Blood Mountain. It's just fucking great -- especially while drinking.

Crack > Leviathan > Sun > Blood > Hunter > Remission

How proud do you think Mastodon is when they come up with these infinitely badass lyrics?

From Chimes at Midnight:

I saw the mountain crumble down
I saw colossus in flames
I heard the ocean draining
Nothing that I could ever tame

OFF WITH MY HEAD -- COME DOWN THE LINE
I HAVE THE RIGHT TO DEEEEECIIIIIIIDE

[...]

ALL MY HEROES, THEY'RE ALL DEAD

We have heard the chimes at midnight
Into the void I go
Will I ever see your face again?
Or will black be all I know?

So sweeping, grand and epic. I had low expectations for this album because The Hunter was inconsistent and "High Road" has an awful chorus (and is by far my least favorite song on the new album), but goddam this is a great record.

The new Septic Flesh is awesome too. The machine gun riffs on "War in Heaven" and the title track are unspeakably badass. The album doesn't come close to dethroning Communion, but it's on par with The Great Mass which was a great record so what is there to complain about?

I'm drunk and overly enthusiastic about metal at the moment. Deal with it!

HEY! HO! LET'S FUCKING GO! HEY! HO! LET'S GET UP AND ROCK N' ROLL!

The new Dragonforce song is god awful. I mean they were never really good but now they sound like some generic metalcore band with a random power metal guy singer over the top.

Dragonforce has always been the Slipknot of Power Metal to me. Yuck.

Or something like that (sorry, that analogy....doesn't really work). I never really got into it.

\m/ Everything you said except that I also like High Road a lot!!! The guitar harmonies in the last haft of the song are soooooo delicious! Diamonds in the Witchhouse (the last song) featuring that Neurosis dude...man!!! I wouldn't mind a whole album like that, haha!

Motherload, as poppy as it may be, has been stuck in my ears for hours now!

This is a beast of an album for sure! :) ..I have yet to get drunk to this :D

I'm not a metalhead at all to be honest, but I stumbled upon Babymetal on youtube and love them.

The mix between cute, adorable and brutal is weird but awesome.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIKqgE4BwAY

You know, for some reason I'd completely avoided listening to Babymetal up to this point.

Holy shit. Holy shit.

I love metal. I love J-pop.

I haaaaaaaaaaate this. Holy shit it's so bad. And I can't even quantify why. It's just...fuck. I can't even.

Okay, I feel the need to post some Japanese female metal that doesn't sound like it was conceived in a board room somewhere.

Gallhammer - Crucifixion (Ruin of a Church)

Gallhammer - World to be Ashes

First one's straight black metal, second's more of a doom/black hybrid.
Ill Innocence was my jam back then, great kind of lightning in a bottle affair. Sadly everything since and before was really, really bad in my opinion :(
They have an awesome name though.

Also: new Earth track "From the Zodiacal Light" ermahgerd. Holy shit the vocals. It's orgasmic.

Been listening to Equilibrium's Erdentempel. Great shit. German based Viking/Power Metal.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0W9o2h1wvhg

Another amazing album from them, and album of the year so far. I'm glad they're keeping on after most of the original members have left, I think Rene is only getting better and better. Equilibrium has one of the most interesting sounds in metal, maybe the best folk and symphonic metal band in the world.
