Aeternus - Sentinels of Darkness

This album is fucking awesome. I've seen it mentioned for a long time and finally decided to pick it up and give it a listen. It typically gets labeled as black metal but it's really not, at least not pure black metal. Very atmospheric though. I love the folk melodies they use.

I'm not a metalhead at all to be honest, but I stumbled upon Babymetal on youtube and love them.

The mix between cute, adorable and brutal is weird but awesome.

Okay, I feel the need to post some Japanese female metal that doesn't sound like it was conceived in a board room somewhere.

Gallhammer - Crucifixion (Ruin of a Church)

Gallhammer - World to be Ashes

First one's straight black metal, second's more of a doom/black hybrid.

I listened to Seraphis' stuff first. And then to the other thing. And then I cried.

When the vocals came in on that first track, though, I was like, "Damn, gurl." The doom-y one not so much.

Holy shit, new Earth? And with vocals?! This I have to hear.
It's so perfect. It's like I waited my whole Earth-listening life for it, and didn't even know.
And to think Mark Lanegan will sing on the new album too

DragonForce - The Game Feat. Matt Heafy of Trivium

New Album Maximum Overload releases August 18.

Also here's some news from June 3.

DragonForce have announced former Braindamage and Kill Ritual drummer Gee Anzalone has joined the band.

A native of Turin, Italy, Gee is a drum teacher who graduated from the NAMM Academy of Milan and carries on the well established multi-national mix of musicians that make up DragonForce.

Gee will make his live debut on the forthcoming ‘Maximum Overload’ UK Tour which commences on September 17th in Edinburgh and replaces Dave Mackintosh who recorded 4 albums with the band prior to the forthcoming ‘Maximum Overload’ which is released on August 18th.

Dave is moving on to pastures new to focus on his first musical love which is Prog Rock and has released the following statement.

"After much thought I have parted ways with the boys in DragonForce to pursue my first love of progressive rock, I wish the lads all the luck in the world and look forward to the release of Maximum Overload as I truly believe this is the most fantastic DF album that I and the boys have recorded to date!
Many thanks to all the fans who have supported me in this last decade of massive tours, countless shows and all the albums, I couldn’t have done it without you.
I will continue to tour and play with some of the greatest names in Prog Rock, and hope to see some familiar faces on the road!
In the meantime, stay metal, watch out for the new Dave Mackintosh website which will be launched within the next 4 weeks as well as some great new videos I will be producing with my gear sponsors.
DF forever!!”
Dave.

DragonForce guitarist Herman Li said “We have been through a lot with Dave and want to thank him for everything he has contributed to DragonForce, both as a friend and musician and we would all like to wish him well with his new project.”

Good album, but more recent Aeternus is phenomenal. It's like what Amorphis would be like today if they ended up being good after Thousand Lakes.

Tim Lambesis world exclusive interview: The As I Lay Dying singer breaks his year-long silence

TimLambesis-WorldExclusiveInterview-2014.jpg

So I just spent an eternity reading this. Wow, that was something. If anything it's a reflection oh how normal people end up being a broken mess.

I guess I'm just glad the whole situation wasn't worse.

I never liked As I Lay Dying's music but this is an incredibly captivating interview. Like you say, it shows how a normal person slowly declines by degrees and how a lot of small issues left unaddressed can snowball into extraordinarily large problems. Tim sounds like he's legitimately regretful and owns up to all the mistakes he's made from seemingly crystal clear perspective which is far better than the damage control I was expecting.

The new Dragonforce song is god awful. I mean they were never really good but now they sound like some generic metalcore band with a random power metal guy singer over the top.

Haha, I thought it was alright. Better than most of the stuff on "Power Within". Mind you, that's not saying much. Everything since "Inhuman Rampage" has just been the same song over and over pretty much.

That being said, their debut "Valley Of The Damned" was very good.

Haha, all these comments on youtube about the new Dragonforce song having screaming and growling as if it's something they haven't done before is hilarious. Screaming and growlings been in their songs throughout their career, it's just been buried so far in the mix that it's pretty tricky to hear. Butthurt fans are always a goldmine for laughs.

What ever happened to Nevermore???
The Final Product
Better than Dream Theater to my ears.

Not that difficult considering DT's latest album was pretty shit. Haha! At one point I couldn't stop replaying "The Termination Proclamation" over and over.

But yeah, Warrel Dane said the band isn't exactly dead, he's just currently focusing on his other band "Sanctuary". Pretty good band too, been going since the 80's.

I quite like that album, along with their second one (I can't recall the name for some reason). It has better production and sounds more like a blacj/death hybrid. Killer opening track

Are they still active? Latest I heard was Hexagon from 2006(?). Sounded like generic death metal to me.

.

Yeah, been listening to their second album too and it is pretty killer. I'm not sure which one I prefer. In some ways I like the more repetative, epic riffs from the first album but the second one has more solid death metal riffing.

I want to check out some of their later albums too but some of the covers are just... I mean, look at this shit

Haha, just read that at the same day Kvelertak that is playing my town, Kylesa will be here too. Fucking brilliant booking.

:(

That sucks. If I had to make that choice, I'd go to Kvelertak. I don't think I've encountered bookings like that. A Festival I'll be attending also has some unfortunate scheduling issues.

Day 1: Opeth and Behemoth are playing at the same time. I'm a huge fan of Opeth and I'm quite curious about the new album. But I'm also really into The Satanist, love to hear it live. And I didn't get the opportunity to see Behemoth live yet, while I have seen Opeth twice. Ghost and Triptykon also overlap, I loved Ghosts live performance, but Im more a fan of Triptykons music.
Day 2: Mastodon vs Cult of Luna. I'm a lot more into Cult of Luna, but I'd really like to see both of them live. As an extra bonus, these shows also partially overlap with Satyricon.
Day 3: Alica in Chains vs Death.

Very busy schedule compared to the last couple of years. It seems like there is always overlap between three bands. On the bright side, I can now entertain myself during Limp Bizkit, because Dark Tranquility and Carcass are playing during their (LB) entire set. On the old schedule you'd have to survive 1.5 hours of Durst and pals.

Not bad, indeed. Though I'm not sure how I feel about the vocals. I have the same problem with DT... As much as I love them, I always disliked what LaBrie did with his voice.

Can Portnoy just come back maybe then I'll be happy again pls ):

Still sore that I missed the Kvelertak/Gojira/Mastodon concert that was here in May. Ugh.

EDIT: I'm listening to Termination Proclamation now and like the vocals here a lot more, for some reason.

I don't know if this counts as metal but Every Time I Die has a new CD out on July 1st called From Parts Unknown and you can listen to the whole thing on their YouTube channel. It's fucking amazing. They are the rare band that gets better and better with each album.

What's everyone been listening to? I've sorta been stuck in my own little world so I need some new suggestions, more on the death side of things. Behemoth's The Satanist is the only new release I've given spins to in the last while.

If it helps, Gloom by Job for a Cowboy is my favourite death metal release in a while, and Arsis if that counts?

Can some one help me identify just what this is? I bought this Grand Belial's Key CD a few years back in a record store. Now I'm not the biggest GBK fan but it appears to be some alternate pressing of a Mocking the Philanthropist, a limited edition maybe? Bootleg?

On the cover it has a photograph of the band members, and text that says "We savoured the Virgin's Pessary" and "G.B.K. is B.M.F.W.P." (which I can assume it means Grand Belial's Key is Black Metal for White People").

I have google searched for this pressing but couldn't find a thing. Not even an image of the cover art. On rateyourmusic I had to add the pressing myself because there was no information about it.

What the hell do I have here?

Wish I could help, but I've never seen or heard of that pressing before. Is there any pressing info on the spine? Could be a promo cd, tour cd, or some random bootleg. I have a bunch of weird promo cd/cassettes of other bands that have no pressing info on them and are usually intentionally bizarre and used as "placeholders" until final art arrives.

Well on the spine it says WNR-005 like the real versions of the CD but what really confounds me is the alternate cover art.

I could give my opinions on all of these but you really, really need to see Cult of Luna. Mastodon are great live, I've seen them a few times and I love their album work but Cult of Luna is one of the best live acts I've ever seen. I saw them without ever hearing a single song by them and I was absolutely hypnotized the whole time. I'm always the guy in the mosh pit for the whole show, but these guys are the only band to ever make me sit still and just watch through sheer force of atmosphere, great music, and stellar stage presence.

Just wanted to pop into the thread and say that Unas, Slayer of the Gods by Nile is probably my favorite metal track. So any suggestions along those lines are appreciated. Mostly prefer Death metal, also enjoy some Black metal here and there, usually on the dark and ambient side of things.

You'd probably dig the new Hour of Penance.

Pallbearer absolutely killed it last night. All the new songs they played were spectacular. I cannot wait for their new album.

Deafheaven were a lot of fun too. I guess people like to talk shit about the singer's stage antics but I really like a singer that engages with the crowd, which he does a lot. Packed venue too and the crowd was very into it.

I enjoyed Lambesis' account of how he went from a christian to an atheist to a christian. From superstition..to critical thinking and rationality..back to 'im special and the space man has plans for me'. Shit is sad all around.

I'm listening to Atheist right now, but that's tech death. Not sure if you would like it.

Sounds like a bootleg. What does the CD look like? Any barcode?
