The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

Just came back from an awesome 3-day Metalfest in Germany.
Never heard Sabaton or Powerwulf before, but damn they are awesome, especially Live.
Now I need to buy some records from them. Any advices which I should buy first?

I'm sure this album has been thrown around more than once in the first OT, but I was listening to this album a lot, and I think it's still awesome. Anybody else like it?

Part brag post, part unpopular metal opinion post:

I watched Metallic's Monster doc yesterday and today I ran twenty miles. I don't listen to music, so I have plenty of time to think about random shit on long runs. Anyway, I thought a lot about Metallica's St. Anger and realized it really is an excellent album. In the doc, Bob Rock states that the album should capture a band getting together for the first time and playing in their garage-- the band just happens to be Metallica. And if that is the ethos of the album, it is pretty much perfect: sub-par mix, loose song structure, off-key singing, etc., just the sound of a band trying to find themselves.

I have completely changed my mind about St. Anger. It rocks, for what it is.

But they've already released an album that captured the essence of a band getting together for the first time and playing in their garage and it was fucking amazing.

Maybe you're right; if you divorce St. Anger with their entire lineage, then it's not horrible, but still not anything I would actively listen to. I will say I have more respect for something like St. Anger than bands like Sodom who went back and re-recorded their classic albums, saying things like "this is how it was meant to sound 25-years ago" when half the techniques they reintroduce are garbage mainstream metal techniques that weren't even around during the initial recording. Just shamelessly trying to ride that retro thrash wave.

Good initial point, but maybe the idea of getting so big that they had to discover a new way forward (without their bass player, again) is what St. Anger is about: Strip it down, build a future sonic template. Even though that way forward was Death Magnetic, which may, or may not, defeat my argument.

I think I found a lens/frame to view the record through, which actually makes it a great record (I have always enjoyed certain aspects of it, though)... with some of the best drumming Lars has ever done; regardless of the snare sound

Thanks to prime music, I'm going through all of Amon Amarth's discography for free. Just never got around to buying/borrowing it from a friend/finding albums on youtube. Love this.

Fucking excellent, dude. We're glad to have you!

I've been on a NWOBHM kick lately, so when I have more time I'll hit you up for some recommendations. I'm not overtly familiar with the lesser known NWOBHM bands and would absolutely love to expand that section of my metal library.

Yeah I'm a big loving Metal Head haha, would be glad to help get your knowledge up on some of the hundreds of gems in NWOBHM. That list is an excellent start for anybody curious about the variety of the era. It will definitely turn anyone into a maniac after blasting all the bands

Welcome! You have great taste too. \m/

New Mastodon tomorrow! Can't wait to see if it's worth getting.

Anybody else getting it?

I was kinda sceptical at first (I liked their last albums, though)...After more than a few "spins" I'm soooo going to get this when I've got the money!! To me this is Crack The Skye part II with some of the more straigtforward songwriting of the Hunter and the aggression of Leviathan mixed in. Repeated-listening-potential is huge with this one!

It seems kind of accessible but there's almost too much going on at first. It's a grower for sure while still having some songs that should be able to shake up a party...It rocks!

Man, the only one I could go see is on a Monday night about 4 hours from where I'll be. If it was a Friday I'm make the trip but fuck having to head back home Tuesday morning.

Fantastic list man. Brought back tons of memories from high school. I used to dig through records bins for this stuff and still have tons of 'em on vinyl stashed away at my mom's house. Tokyo Blade and Sweet Savage were my shit.

New Overkill song!
Armorist
Pretty solid. Can't believe how strongly they've recovered from their shitty period. <3 Few bands ever manage that.

Their shitty period still produced great songs, they never really went completely off track like other thrash bands or Kreator - Endromeda,

Overall the song is good, Blitz classic melodies over a simple lyric structure. I await another solid album from them

Old School Thrash Album Profile: Cyclone Temple - I Hate Therefore I Am

Cyclone_Temple_-_I_Hate_Therefore_I_Am.jpg

For those of you who don't know, Cyclone Temple was formed after the amazing old school band Znöwhite disbanded. Extremely underrated even as far as underground 90s Thrash goes, this band has everything good going for them.

This Album in particular has amazing guitars and a good production, wrapped around a very commanding vocal by Brian Troch. The lyrics are meaningful and the melody and structure are complimented by tight musicianship that progresses near perfectly.

If you are a fan of Thrash Metal, do not pass up the chance to hear this gem that is regard by Thrash Maniacs like myself as one of the best things to come from 1991 which was a very stacked year for Thrash Metal classics.

Stand out songs include - Sister (Until We Meet Again), March for Me Die for Me, Silence so Loud, Words Are Just Words, and Public Enemy.

Not bad, not bad at all!

I'm not going to outright say "the new Mastodon blows." It's decent and certainly catchy. But I can't be the only person who views it as a colossal disappointment, right?

It's better than The Hunter, and that is honestly the best praise I can give the album. I can't even listen to The Hunter, I think I can listen to this album a bit. It's like they did Crack The Skye and thought nope, we can't even try to top that one and just decided to go a different direction.

That's the thing - while I didn't think it was as good as their prior work, I enjoyed The Hunter. Once you got past the singles (Black Tongue was eh and Curl of the Burl sucked) it felt like a poppier take on b-sides from Blood Mountain with a dash of Skye weirdness thrown in. I was okay with Mastodon taking this direction as a band.

Then Once More 'Round The Sun is that sound taken to a logical extreme that saps interesting songwriting out of the music in the name of catchiness. There are interesting bits here and there (if the rest of their vision was executed as well as The High Road I'd probably be okay with it, and Chimes at Midnight/whatever the name of the witch track that ends the album are at least trying to be a little more interesting) but most of it is boring, which is a word I never thought I'd use to describe Mastodon. It feels like they're using most of their familiar songwriting tricks to write a paint-by-numbers rock album. I had to force myself to finish the album on each of my spins and I'll probably never listen to it again.

NPR: Pallbearer track from the new album, 'The Ghost I Used To Be'

This sounds pretty good, similar to their previous work with a more clear production.

Also fuck Mastodon we should be talking about this because it sounds like Pallbearer might be improving on Sorrow and Extinction, and Pallbearer improving on their last album is an easy AotY contender and likely winner for me.

I haven't listened to all of it, but I'm hoping it will grow on me or something. But I don't know if I"ll be too disappointed, since I knew this next album will be either hit or miss with me.

In more positive news, a new Incantation album recently came out. Woot!
