The Metal Thread |OT2| All Riffs, No Gifs

So I just discovered that Jonas Akerlund, who has directed videos for Madonna, Robin Thicke, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Maroon 5, directed the music video for Candlemass's Bewitched. And was the original drummer for Bathory.

Small world, eh?

Figured that wouldn't be up long.

Yup, and I just found this on Devin's twitter. Somebodies been a naughty boy!

Even smaller world, Per "Dead" Ohlin from Mayhem is in the Candelmass video too.

First Ziltoid TV episode is up. Looks like it ties in with the original Ziltoid album!

Also, a rather bandwith heavy website has popped up in relation to Ziltoid 2.

http://www.ziltoid.com/

And some radio show played nearly half of the Ziltoid disc and a few songs from the DTP disk. It's in disgustingly horrible quality, but I couldn't resist checking it out. Good stuff! I really can't wait to get this thing. Haven't been this hyped on an album in a while.

I'm just really overall happy for him. No matter what you think of his music, I think you have to admit it's pretty great he gets to have so much fun doing what he loves. He's a good guy and he deserves this. He deserves the satisfaction of knowing he can write what he loves and others will love it too no matter whether it's something like Casualties or Z2.

Thrash is a T-Rex because it's extinct.

The Underground is alive and thriving for fans who pay attention.

Cool new bands on the scene like Perpetratör from Portugal come to mind as one of my favorite Releases this year with the solid effort of "Thermonuclear Epiphany".

Then again, I'm not your average fan of Thrash Metal so my perception on the health of the scene is biased even though I participate in it and actively support it.

So Kekal, the weird, long-running, now-memberless-but-still-existing, once-black-metal-now-avantgarde-metal Indonesian band has just gotten a little weirder.

Their 10th full-length album, Multilateral, is coming out next year and they've slowly been releasing each track one at a time. But they've recently announced that they'll be using a vocaloid (specifically Megurine Luka) to sing on three of the tracks.

Kekal has been usually pretty good about blending weird stuff well, so we'll see I guess. Still pretty funny.

Every genre of metal is alive and well if you care to look.

Of course, there is the the waves of neo-thrash bands but out of them there hasn't been much that was really mindblowing or pushed the genre further. There is Vektor who are pretty great, but then there are scores of others that just seem to be stuck in the trappings of the genre without really making exceptional music. I am not hating on thrash in the slightest, but rather I am just disappointed that so many of these newer bands adopted the style in the most banal way possible.

I'd say the retro-thrash movement died in its first couple years of popularity, you can tell when bands have their own voice and identity and those who try to ride their image off an 80s thrash band. Dust Bolt released a new album this year and obviously tried too hard to get the best qualities of EvilDead, but failed at capturing their own identity in the process. Most people will eat up that album as amazing but I'm not fooled by it. However it should be noted that this retro-thrash style of bands like National Suicide are not thought highly of anymore and should not be, since the novelty ran out long ago. So much more bands running with inspiration and doing it with an identity, nothing to move the genre into a new corner(which after 30+ years thrash has been pretty much everywhere while keeping it roots intact) but keeping it interesting and keeping the scene alive.

Bands like Höwler from Costa Rica excels at creating catchy thrash
