I love everything Megadeth up to and including Cryptic Writings. Everything from Risk on sucks. Although there's a decent song here and there on the later albums.

not sure if this belongs here, but Royal Blood's first album came out today and i am really digging it.

Death metal which I like: Bolt Thrower, Arch Enemy, Demonical, Amon Amarth, Hypocrisy, In Flames, Bloodbath.

Any suggestions?

You and I have some similar tastes. Here are a few off of the top of my head.

At the Gates, Watain, Dark Tranquility, Behemoth, The Crown, Sylosis, The Haunted, Goatwhore, The Black Dahlia Murder, and Dark Funeral.

Old Man's Child and Dimmu Borgir aren't really death metal but, I'd give them a go based on your tastes.

Good stuff. Bolt Thrower!

Anyway, have you listened to Effigy of the Forgotten? My favorite Death Metal album of all time. I've listened to it constantly for more than eight years and I never get tired of it.

Basically I'm looking for evil brutal death, but with a hint of, I dont know... groove? in the songs?

Watain, Dark Tranquility, Behemoth, The Crown and The Haunted I already listen to :)

Sylosis and Goatwhore sounds interesting so will check them out, thanks!

Never heard of it, will check it out!

Also yes, Bolt Thrower is probably the best death metal band in the world. Or at least, the most brutal.

Here comes the deluge of OSDM namedrops.

I'll give you some of the most seminal releases, as well as a couple personal faves. These are albums you should listen to if you have any interest in death metal at all.

Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness
I consider this to be the crown jewel of the whole death metal genre. Sample

Autopsy - Severed Survival
Another 1989 masterpiece, like Altars, this album was integral to the future of the death metal genre. Sample

Cianide - The Dying Truth
Prepare to hear some of the heaviest OSDM out there. Make sure to crank up the volume to 11 for this one. Sample

Incantation - Onward to Golgotha
Incantation are one of the most iconic in bands in the death metal world. Their sound is super heavy, cavernous and sinister. Bands today still adopt the style they pioneered.Sample

Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten
Pioneers of the "brutal death metal" style, you can't go wrong with Suffocation. Sample

Immolation - Close to a World Below
One of the best albums, 2000 and on-wards. Heavy as all hell. Sample

Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
Technical death metal famous for including some jazz influences in their music. Mandatory listening. Sample

Demilich - Nespithe
You will constantly hear people rave about this one, and for good reason. Weird, technical, froggy vocals, amazing. Sample

Eucharist - A Velvet Creation
Perhaps one of most favorite Swedish DM bands. Beautiful yet heavy. Sample

The Chasm - The Spell of Retribution
Fuck it, just listen to any album by these guys, it is all top tier mystical death metal with impeccable songwriting and eclectic influences. Sample

What do you guys think of this album?

No_rest_for_the_wicked.jpg

It's the best Zakk Wylde Ozzy album song-for-song. Dude was only 20 yrs old and playing his ass off. No Rest For the Wicked gave Ozzy new life - The Ultimate Sin (Jake E. Lee's last album) was pretty shitty. Zakk was the new injection of youth for Ozzy and gave his sound more ballz. Plus Randy Castillo was a monster on this album.

So it turns out Pentacle is fucking awesome. $24 for the ticket -- not terrible, considering I can get drunk off my own supply beforehand and take public transportation to the venue. Several beers at the hall + a patch and/or shirt + jovial merriment with my IRL metal bros = d'awww, hell yeah senpai ^_^

To loop the stupid inebriated paragraph above into something slightly more worthwhile, how many of you particularly enjoy a metal show while in a bad mood? I've had an uncommonly shitty week, and I always find that when I'm going through a rough patch that metal shows can become near-transcendent. I sure do love headbanging, but come on -- how intense do I actually headbang when I'm just listening to metal on my iPod or speakers at home? It's some mild neck movement at best. When I'm at a concert though, it becomes part of the ritual. I've never not had an incredibly sore neck for at least the next 48 hours following a good metal show. I love it - such a great way to work out all those bad feels.

Man, you at least have a designated driver with you, right?

I think plenty of Metal can help you feel better. Metal indeed helps relieve stress, at least for me.

I hope you are just joking here man.

Seriously, don't drink and drive. It's not something to take lightly, it's dangerous as fuck. Safety first. Not chastising you, I do care.

Of course I don't drink and drive, ya doofus :P In fact, I saw Brocas Helm perform that song live before and I actively booed them afterwords because I find the message of the song to be so disgustingly shitty.

I DO appreciate the concern though, my metal brotha \m/

Welp. I missed that.

But yes, glad to hear you take public transportation.

Too clean. The chorus reminds me almost of Soilwork.

...this coming from a guy who thinks their best song is Forging Towards the Sunset

nah, i see it - forging toward the sunset had growls underpinning the clean vocals and more dissonant chords rather than a guitar riff that's a step removed from melodeath tremolo picking. i dig it because i think it's the logical move from vanitas if you're into the contrast of "anaal nathrakh insanity during most of the song with clean choruses" which i think is still an effective trick.

Last year I had a particularly terrible day at work. This is saying a lot, considering that I usually like my job and feel fortunate to be in a position to do what I do. But the shit that I was going through had me seriously close to quitting.

That very night, I went to Skeletonwitch and Black Dahlia. It was such an emotionally liberating experience. I just rocked the fuck out for a few hours and felt so much better at the end of the night.

Next day, things got smoothed over and I'm still working there.
