Galneryus - Vetelgyus

Well, here it is folks. The latest album by the greatest Japanese power metal band, and no doubt my favorite power metal band. With Vetelgyus, Galneryus show no sign of letting up in delivering totally fucking eargasmic symphonic/neoclassical power metal. The songs here are very well written and performed, with Sho's vocals being catchy and beautiful as usual and Syu and Yuhki laying down blistering riffs and solos. What a talented band! That's about all I can say about this record. Solid as a rock in every aspect.

Syu really should leave Galneryus. He's a great musician but he's been doing the same shit over and over again for 6 (Edit:) 9 albums or something. He used to be my favorite Japanese guitarist but now I'm more interested in Takayoshi Ohmura, who plays in a lot of different projects.

this just makes me sad about takafumi matsubara having to stop playing guitar

Welcome brother! It is nice to see another power metal fan in here.

One recommendation, have you heard of Galneryus? I'd imagine you'd like them. They are the band that got me interested in power metal.

No, never heard of them, but that sounds good to me, so I will definitely check them out further! (Bit late at replying, busy times haha).

Interesting to hear a Japanese power metal band, not really familiar with bands outside of Europe and the USA (save for the more well known like Angra). Is the genre popular in Japan?

There is a great community of power metal bands from Japan and its influence upon the music of video games and anime is undeniable... so I guess it is quite popular. On top of that, most Japanese power metal I've heard, I've really liked. Another great aspect is that most of the heavy hitters in the Japanese scene are active and producing content, in the past few years we've seen a lot of great albums produced. Some people may be turned off by the crazy "visual kei" aspects of a lot of the bands, however.

It takes a really cool chorus to make that formula work, and In Flames pulled it off pretty well (especially Touch of Red). When it's good, it's great.

Honestly, "Goliaths Disarm Their Davids" is one of the most epic In Flames songs ever, and I don't think they've ever played it live. Or at least haven't in the past decade (or any of the shows I've seen them at). The chorus is practically the main riff of the song.

So good.

Edit: Confirming they've not played the song probably ever since they released it.

Their mistake is your gain! haha, I've begun trying to dissect some of the riffs and shit the intro sweep in "From The Tombs of Five Below" is a tricky one to get clean.

For those curious, here is the arpeggio.

Hmm, think my shit is all fucked up, that one's listed as "Guards of Contagion" for me and one of the songs straight up cuts off a minute in and is just silence lol. Hopefully once the album officially releases I can re-DL it and have a not fucked up version. The 95% of the album that I can listen to is damn good, though.

But major props for even trying at that stuff. I've never come close to being able to do sweeps or anything. Buz's playing seems like black magic to me at times.

For some reason I've always thought that Unearths "The March" had a very muddy sound, which held back the intensity of that album. And then "Darkness in the light" seemed flat. "The Oncoming Storm" and "In the Eyes of Fire" really nailed it in that regard.
Really, my only issue is with the production. Unearth is scarily consistent when it comes to good metalcore, and those breakdowns are still the best in the business. Some of my favourite comfort-metal.

Agreed on all counts. For what it's worth, the new album's production feels pretty solid, and like you, I was bothered by the previous two albums in that regard.

Related to progressive metal:

I got my tickets to The Theater Equation! It is basically the Human Equation of Ayreon performed live as a musical.

Many talents are involved (and quite a lot from the original album): http://shadowfreaks.com/athete_en/?page_id=35

As Arjen Lucassen barely plays something live, this is probably as close as I am going to get to a Ayreon live performance.

Ah, nice. Always good to hear some neoclassical pieces.

Never really thought about that, but yes, definitely.

It is all about the music (unless I am watching a live performance or attending a concert), so weird/over the top looking bands do not bother me, fortunately. What are the main heavy hitters over there?

X Japan are perhaps one of the biggest influences on the Japanese heavy metal scene, and they definitely have some very good albums. The best modern power metal bands that I know of however are Galneryus, Versailles, Kamijo, Onmyouza, Light Bringer, Alhambra, MinstreliX, Matenrou Opera, etc. There are a lot of more underground projects that rearrange power metal versions of Touhou music too.

Look what the postie brought me today!

Image quality isn't the best, but the box that it comes in is a beautiful looking silver reflective case with the Ziltoid logo on it. Comes with CD versions of the albums as well, so I'll be cramming them into my PC tray. Looking forward to giving both albums a few spins. Will post impressions later.

I love both discs. Haven't had a chance to see what the voice-less version of Dark Matters is like though. I also can't tell which one I'd rate higher. Sky Blue sounds like a sort of mash of Addicted and Epicloud, but with a dash of some of his older style (like Terria)... not a lot, but just a dash of that, I'd say. I love the direction he went with Dark Matters as far as the radio play style. It really works in this context, and the voice actors/singers he got are really great. The narrator is perfect, and the War Queen's voice/singer is awesome.

It's pretty interesting learning where Sky Blue came from. I guess the label wasn't convinced on just doing Z2 and asked him to do something more like Addicted and Epicloud to add to it. He did it at first as a sort of compromise, but says now that it was great for him and he's really proud of it, too.

Also funny is that now that these 2 are out I'm getting even more addicted to Casualties of Cool.... this is going to be a hard year to rank my top albums, lol.

What is the hell with Decapitated getting into car crashes?

Oh fuck, I read about this. Scary, but I'm glad it didn't end tragically. That car crash that claimed the life of their drummer, very sad.

In other news, Soundgarden has a new song out....and it's bland as fuck. Oh well.

I saw Pallbearer last night; they were great. It was a sold out show, but there were seemingly more people there to see Tombs (who were also good, as always, even if I've never been a big fan), which I was shocked by. There were significantly less people in the room by the time Pallbearer went on.

If you guys haven't seen, Z2 was put on Spotify today. They're the best albums I've listened to in a while.

It really says something about an artist that's been around as long as Devin has, that he can not only deliver a sequel that people have wanted for years, but also release a second complete album at the same time that doesn't just have the same old thing, but brings new things to the table in a fantastic way. I'm really having trouble choosing between Dark Matters and Sky Blue for my favorite of the two, they're both such amazing albums. Heck, Sky Blue is probably one of my top Devin albums, it had everything.

Devy fucking spoils us.

Hey all,

Starting to get into Dream Theater, but the catalog is huge. Any recommendations for the best songs/albums to start with?

I've really only been listening to Images and Words at this point. And yes, I love Pull Me Under, I'm told thats the main entry point for most. Guess its like their Enter Sandman or whatever. Appreciate any feedback on where to go from here.

Looks like Warrior and Dimension Z aren't available on Spotify, though. The rest is.

But yeah, I have to agree, Dev is kind of crazy when you really think about how many albums the guy's got out, and the quality of all of them.

I can't decide either between Sky Blue and Dark Matters.

I'm digging the new At the Gates. It's not album of the year material but, it's good if you're a fan of the band...which I am.

EDIT: it sort of tapers off after the midway point. Still not a bad listen though.

It depends what other music you listen to, but I'd suggest: Dream Theater (2013), Images and Words and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (Disc 2).

I think Images & Words, Scenes from a Memory, or 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulence are all decent starting points.

Like 2013 this has been a good year for metal so far. But this is the album I looked forward to the most:

Dawnbringer - Night of the Hammer.

I discovered the band through Into the Lair of the Sun God, although Nucleus is maybe the better and certainly more praised album.

Chris Black can do no wrong. His other bands (Pharaoh, High Spirits) are also great.
